Why do you care? Trouting is such a hackneyed, tired-assed way to treat people. Just deal with it.

I'll have to disagree with you there. There's no point in repeating old info over and over. It's better to have a polite way of responding to people who are doing it rather than then continuing to have to "deal with it". I think there needs to be order in the forums for everybody to follow along effectively. Although I think new players are great and always welcome, I think we'd all have a hell of a time following along with tons of posts that are off topic, repeats, etc.

Slapping people in the face with a smelly fish doesn't fix that problem.

mostly i think this all started because xnbomb and i both started a new topic about the drexel email.. our posts were probably less then a minute apart as i did not see his topic until i had already finished mine.. I didn't mean to repeat info.. it just happened we both posted basically at the same time and now there are 2 threads and for that i am sorry.. i tried steering ppl to the other thread to no avail. i'll make a better effort in the future

I don't really like the smelly fish part of it myself. Ick. And I don't mean to say that we need the specific word "trout" either. It could be "elbow" for all I care. But from my perspective, when I first started here I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know what an ARG was, I hadn't been an active part of any forum community either. I appreciated it when people said nicely - "Hey, that's already been discussed over here..." whether it was said like that or a simple "trout". I quickly learned to read everything before posting. And it was much better than someone saying "Hey idiot. Learn what the F you are doing before you contribute your thoughts" If someone had said that to me, I probably would have left the forums. So yeah, I think maybe the trout jokes are old, but for people who are less in tune with the community I think it's still necessary.

May I suggest the fact that the AWARE forum could use some form of guidelines to posting messages?
There has been a lot of discussion on that in the past, for example in this thread . There are two different types of guidelines in there, very strict ones, mainly from the Cloudmaker/Collective Detective age, and a set that was used on Project MU, that is a bit looser.
Imho applying some rules to posting makes it easier to prevent "trouting" and other mistakes by overlooking threads & such.

I have been around for a little bit and notice that alot of ill feelings are born when peeps are slapped with the smelly trout. It is mostly the way that it is done that creates rancor.....
As in everything that you post on this forum if you think that it is remotely offensive to someone think about what you are going to say and rephrase it more eloquently. There is no reason to attack someone for making the mistake of posting something that is already posted...
AND because they are new just means that they need to learn the rules and with tact and caring most peeps will learn them pretty quickly
give peas a chance!!! lelelelelle
Disclaimer: this post was not pointed at anyone so please do not be offended....but if you feel guilty maybe you need to wonder why

I agree with Sunny. This is just the pre game. Things will get much more confused as the game progresses . Kindness and tolerance to people who are coming here for their first ARG experience is really important. We want new players, we need all the brain power we can get. Helpful hints to newbies are much better than slapping them with a trout. There will be players who disregard all the guidelines even after they've been pointed to them, so they are fair game for trouting and should be thoroughly trouted.

In my defence I'd like to say I never intended to do any trouting. I'm still a Newbie myself after all. My reason for posting was so that anyone who didn't know what trouting was would look it up and see the point I was trying to make. Perhaps I was being a bit too subtle.
P.S. If you cover your monitor in any type of fine gauze or netting it actually prevents the trout from hitting you. Try it, espesically at work, everyone will be very impressed.
