i highly doubt this has anything to do with bioshock DLC. i follow video games very closely and they didn't even start working on the DLC til after the game shipped and then got flack for it taking so long. i highly doubt that they would put any money or time into an ARG ad campaign for a DLC that is already taking too long. or any DLC for that matter. if it were a whole new Bioshock game maybe.

i have wondered about it though. i commented on it to my wife multiple times the day we picked up the sandy hook fragment. this ARG obviously cost a good amount to set up. that makes me think it has to be an ad for something. that or maybe someone just has a lot of money and loves ARGs :p

You know I honestly don't want this to be tide to an ad campaign. The fact that so far we've had no indication, doesn't mean it isnt, but I love love love the idea that it could be a group of really dedicated ARG PM's Smile

However I had also considered the amount of money this has to be costing someone, and have to say if it is a group of PM's or something not associated with an ad campaign, these PM's get a huge bow of thanks from me.

yeah my wife was actually starting to get annoyed at how i couldn't stop talking about the quality of the fragments and how it must be costing someone a lot to set this up. i just couldnt get over it lol

No kidding! Just the boxes alone wouldn't be really cheap I would think. Not with the customization LOL

But if it is an add campaign... they are taking time getting to the punch Smile

yeah those boxes are machine engraved. it looks like laser work to put the writing on the cover.

im with you in hoping its not an ad and just someone who loves doing this, but part of me would actually feel kind of bad if the PM doesnt get some kind of payment for all this work lol

Work has kept me out of the loop the past few weeks, alas!

I can't really come up with anything better than the thinking leading toward SF (although I thought I had a link with invisible characters in Jimmy Stewart movies-->rabbit=Harvey, people=clarence, but I couldn't link Mr snuffleupagus)

In any case I'll likely also be in San Francisco area on the 31st, and would love to meet up with anyone else looking for the drop.

The Mechanic has answered a question of mine! I think I vaguely remembered seeing something about this in the forum, but I couldn't find where and it seemed like no one had asked the Mechanic directly...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
burozog asked: Is there any chance the five-digit fragment codes might have some significance? Or are they something the device randomly generates?

A good question! The five-digit identifier is not actually tied to the time device. In actuality, the unique five-digit codes were created by the Tartarus when the recording cartridges were produced.

If fragments were to begin crossing over (which they indeed have), and the Operative was involved (which he indeed was), my hypothesis (which was indeed correct) was that those cartridges used by the Operative (or something else with an OSS identifier) would be present.

Therefore, to identify each fragment, I built the wireless terminal.

So it sounds to me like they are just identifiers... but I'm not totally convinced... Consider
1. That "Tartarus" is an odd name for something like a simple recording device.
2. The strange whispers that appear in some on the recordings (granted, these could be some effect from the crossover, like the combining of the physical objects)

[Update]discover.blackhollowproject.com/
questions asked

My questions to The Mechanic and his replies on the blog:
Quote:
drizjr asked: For clarity, are the images on the passport and painting both of your old friend, The Operative? If so, I hope the surprise of seeing him lifted your spirits.

They are, yes. And it has, quite much, though I admit that I am disappointed.

I guess the next question would be, "Why are you disappointed?". Unless that's obvious to those who have been following more closely. I've been playing catch up. Is it because The Operative used the machine?

This one from three days ago, while I was going through the thread to work on the wiki:
Quote:
drizjr asked: Are you familiar with the name J. Calibeck, or something similar? It is written on the upper right-hand corner of the Blackhollow Point postcard; an item included in The Operative's metal box. This person is attributed as the painter of the postcard. Could J. C. be "The Artist" ?

I don't believe that is a possibility, but I appreciate your attention to small details.

danish, the document you compiled is great! Thank you. ( link to danish's doc)
ETA: danish, I hope it's OK with you that I use it to update the wiki... ?

Thanks, driz! And yes, be my guest. That's pretty much why I contributed with it. As I said, I would do more to work on the wiki now, but I'm strapped for time for the next 2 weeks.

My question to the Mechanic was also answered:

Quote:
danishpatches asked: We know you as the Mechanic. But was that your occupation during the war? Did you train as a Mechanic - where?

I was a Quantum Mechanic, and still am, and trained at the Master and Fellows of the College of the Great Hall of the University of Oxford.

Just thought I'd get confirmation of the more or less obvious... Also, most SIS agents during WW2 were recruited directly at Oxford and Cambridge, so that's no surprise. Incidentally, the Mechanic went to the college more commonly known as University College, which also Stephen Hawking attended.

Edited to fix messed up tags...

The Mechanic has already been Identified.
I Identified him back on page 40 here under a spoiler. I do not have a tumbler account and asked if some one would ask him a question to confirm his identity. Sadly no one has done this to date. I am posting my spoiler here again but I will put the conformation question out side of the spoiler this time.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Although he was not actually born IN Wales, he was just out side and might consider himself Welsh.
Sir James Chadwick seem to fit the bill best of all the real people involved. I am not on tumbler. To confirm his identity I would like 2 things asked for me.
#1 How well was he treated as a POW in the Great war?
#2 would he like us to call him by his U.S. given cover name of James Chaffee?

From what I have read of the individual you ID'd, he does not appear to have trained at Oxford but I will be happy to submit these questions to the Mechanic (if no one else has).

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
That is also how we determined the location for the failsafe.

Makes me think of the movie Primer. So is he saying there's another machine that can undo what this device has done? And/or restore the alternate reality that was written over?
