That is also how we determined the location for the failsafe.

Makes me think of the movie Primer. So is he saying there's another machine that can undo what this device has done? And/or restore the alternate reality that was written over?

Well, the Mechanic has indeed included a new wrinkle in answering a question I had about the Lighthouse.

Greystone, I have submitted your two questions.

From what I have read of the individual you ID'd, he does not appear to have trained at Oxford but I will be happy to submit these questions to the Mechanic (if no one else has).

Oxford could be a mistake. It happens. James Chadwick (J.C.) Fits all of the information given to us outside of this new "Oxford" tid bit. No one else apart of Tube Alloys comes close. Born in Cheshire, England, near Wales. (The Mechanic told us he considers himself Welsh.) He is the ONLY person associated born in this region. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Groves_and_Chadwick_830308.tif

The ONLY person found to have worked on Tube Alloys, and Manhattan Project, and went to Oxford was William George Penney. Born in Gibraltar, British Overseas Territory - Not Wales http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:William_Penney_ID_badge.png

Albert Einstein's Stint at Oxford was not even a year and of course he was not even English or apart of Tube Alloys.

The University of Oxford Notable alumni and academics Mathematics and sciences

Three Oxford mathematicians, Michael Atiyah, Daniel Quillen and Simon Donaldson, have won Fields Medals, often called the "Nobel Prize for mathematics". Andrew Wiles, who proved Fermat's Last Theorem, was educated at Oxford and is currently a Royal Society Research Professor at Oxford. Marcus du Sautoy and Roger Penrose are both currently mathematics professors. Stephen Wolfram, chief designer of Mathematica and Wolfram Alpha studied at the university, along with Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web.

The University is associated with eleven winners of the Nobel Prize in chemistry, five in physics and sixteen in medicine.

Scientists who performed research in Oxford include chemist Dorothy Hodgkin who received her Nobel Prize for "determinations by X-ray techniques of the structures of important biochemical substances". Both Richard Dawkins and Frederick Soddy studied at the university and returned for research purposes. Robert Hooke, Edwin Hubble, and Stephen Hawking all studied in Oxford.

Robert Boyle, a founder of modern chemistry, never formally studied or held a post within the university, but resided within the city in order to be part of the scientific community and was awarded an honorary degree. Notable scientists who spent brief periods at Oxford include Albert Einstein developer of general theory of relativity and the concept of photons; and Erwin Schrödinger who formulated the Schrödinger equation and the Schrödinger's cat thought experiment.

And your answer has been posted by the Mechanic:

heathian asked: Your answers are most appreciated, thank you. I would like to submit on behalf of Greystone (who has no tumblr access) the following: "#1 How well was he (the Mechanic) treated as a POW in the Great war? #2 would he (the Mechanic) like us to call him by his U.S. given cover name of James Chaffee?"

I'm sorry, I'm afraid he is mistaken. I, fortunately, was not a prisoner during the war, and I have never gone by that name.

Two new questions recently answered by the Mechanic. The change in the Operative he mentions, I find most intriguing - hollow?

So now it looks like we'll be getting into uncharted territory for the Mechanic as well.

The drop is this weekend and I don't know if we're in agreement on it's location.

The last clue we got was

Quote:
The following fragment can be discovered by following white rabbits.
However, the rabbits may look like elephants, or perhaps people.
So please keep your eyes peeled and use caution.

Are people pretty convinced it's in San Fran?

Might we get another clue this week?

In all honesty, the fact that the pin hasn't turned green has me suspicious that we're wrong (it usually turns green once we've solved it, right?)

That's part of what I was thinking.

The SF area linkages to the clues were the best I could come up with but I am not tied to it. I just don't have any alternative ideas.

Hmm, the stuff about the purpose for the device and the failsafe has me intrigued. So if I'm understanding this correctly, the history we know as "true" is actually the result of the Operative using the device and these fragments are pieces of a previous or alternative reality? Initially I was thinking that maybe that would explain the Operative's disappearance (i.e. he actually died in the attack on the RMS Galatia) but then wouldn't the mechanic remember the new reality and not the one that was overwritten? I don't know if I'm making sense.

As for the phone message: Right off the bat, I thought "following" was probably a reference to social media like tumblr, twitter, or instagram... so I followed anyone named "whiterabbits" or any variation thereof that I could find. But so far, nothing promising. So I'm thinking I was way off base.

San Francisco sounds reasonable, but I'm wondering if anyone else has any other ideas about the clue... Could it be a reference to something? The Ernest Hemingway story "Hills Like White Elephants" takes place in Spain, so that doesn't help...

August 31, 2013 fragment

With the clue being:

The following fragment can be discovered by following white rabbits.
However, the rabbits may look like elephants, or perhaps people.
So please keep your eyes peeled and use caution.

I will make the case for Philadelphia:

"white rabbits" may refer to the song by Jefferson Airplane, which was formed in San Francisco in 1965, but extrapolating further, it could refer to Thomas Jefferson, who helped write the Declaration Of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776.

"elephants" may refer to the baseball team Athletics, currently playing in Oakland in 2013 (not San Francisco), but called the "white elephant" in 1902 while playing in Philadelphia, where they were still playing in 1943.

"peeled" (or "pealed") could refer to the ringing of the Liberty Bell, which is in Philadelphia.

Also, the clue maybe "i's" (as in the letter i), not "eyes", but not sure where that leads.

I think we must still keep an open mind. If the message refers to Copenhagen or Malmo, I probably wouldn't get it.

Actually, the 'elephants' could refer to Copenhagen, but I seriously doubt it:

If SF not being lit green at this point means we've guessed wrong, I would go with Denmark too. There's a YouTube user named awkwardwhiterabbit that has been posting a "Follow the White Rabbit" vlog of her travels in Coppenhagen, and a white elephant is a herald crest in Denmark.

Copenhagen may be it, then. I certainly am coming up empty...

I did find some little bits of interest:

Los Angeles (well, a suburb called Dana Point) will be hosting a 'parade' of elephant sculptures starting this week

Chicago hired a group of women sculptors to compete work during the Chicago world's fair--they became known as the "White Rabbits" and have several surviving sculptures around Chicago.

There's an Alice in wonderland sculpture featuring a white rabbit in NYC's central park.

Of these, the Chicago bit is the most interesting, but unless we get some other clue, I think they're just random trivia Smile

Are we sure the audio doesn't have any hidden messages?
