ITA The description of coal and steel points toward "steel city' and it had some pretty bad smog back in the day:

 		Putting my vote in for it being Pittsburgh as well. I found this article, it's about something that happened post WW2 but close enough to make me think it was a problem then as well.

That's pretty compelling evidence, especially with the year it happened. No update on the pin though.

Also, that is pretty sweet that the story is leaking into the phone messages now.
