So, I've been thinking about who Cassidy might be, and about the failed sacrifice..... and I wonder if Cassidy was supposed to be the sacrifice, but ended up being replaced by the deer that her family 'accidentally' hit with their car?

There is a precedent for this which fits around the whole story (including Cassidy's family, and the Helen link already mentioned) in the tale of Iphigenia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iphigenia

In some accounts she is sacrificed, in some she is saved at the last minute and replaced by a deer.

I can't seem to find any other stories that fit, anyone else had any luck?

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the Titans. That was a major war of the immortals.

In case people aren't familiar:

The Primordial gods were the first. They created everything, including the Titans.

The Titans were powerful, and are considered "Old gods" but they were (specifically Cronus) jealous of the power the Primordial gods had. So he overthrew his father Uranus. Cronus learned that he too would eventually be overthrown by his son.

So when his children were born he swallowed them, except Zeus. Rhea and Gaia devised a plan to save him, and he was born in secret. Then Rhea tricked Cronus by giving her a rock that was wrapped like a baby, and he swallowed the rock thinking it was his son.

So eventually Zeus overthrew Cronus by tricking him to drink something that made him throw up is siblings.
