Welcome to Night Vale Ok, so Welcome to Night Vale is a bi-monthly narrative podcast centred around a paranormal desert town and its strange inhabitants. It's delivered in the manner of a local news-bulletin broadcast, but with an ominous/gothic/near-Lovecraftian twist, and has been described quite deliciously as 'NPR meets Twin Peaks.'
The show's twitter feed adopts this absurdist mix of soft-spoken humour and blood-curdling menace, and applies it to bizarre non sequiturs, surreal announcements and weirdly veiled threats.
Then, a couple of hours ago, they posted a quick succession of mysterious tweets that seemed to be offering clues to something in particular:
First they tweeted:
It points to a Google Map landmark (point A) that heinrichgraum on tumblr found to be Somerton Park, Australia:
http://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview# !data=!1m4!1m3!1d406!2d138.5113335!3d-35.0005688!2m1!1e3&fid=7
But more specifically it's on the opening to a tunnel called Esplanade-Roe Street Tunnel .
Then:
This shows another landmark (point C) that appears to be Argleton in England (ARG-leton?). This place doesn't actually exist, and was either a Google Maps error, or a deliberate "paper town" (a copyright measure). It has since been removed from the Google Map index.
Then something a bit different:
A low-contrast image of the words DENTAL UNDERGROUND , which could possibly be an anagram of "dread tunnel ground," or something to that effect.
Their most recent tweet reads:
This shows (point D) and as found by corvidae-corvus , it seems to be right on top of the Papoose Mountain Radio Facility , a secretive, possibly abandoned transmission station in Area 51.
It looks like pieces to a larger puzzle, and an ARG wouldn't be too out of character for a show like Night Vale. But I'm gonna need some help...

Sounds intriguing! Also, LOL @ "Argleton".
Not sure what help I can be, especially since I've got a wicked headache going on. Maybe I'll have a nice little lie-down and catch up on the podcast.
ETA: Holy cow, 28 roughly half-hour episodes. Oh well, nothing good on the DVR anyway... plus, "NPR meets Twin Peaks" is kind of hard to resist. In the meantime, a few observations:
You say it's a desert town. Interesting that the twitter is giving us points on 3 different continents - but I'm guessing that we can rule out England as the actual location of the town. Assuming that's what we're meant to be looking for, which is not at all certain.
What, no Exhibit 2/Point B?
Weird that the most recent tweet seems to be blaring "POINT A" even tho the link actually shows Point D. And does it really need to repeat "POINT A" seven times - is that meaningful, or just to add to the creepiness?

New to Night Vale I'm only about 10 episodes in, but I'm hopeful that this could turn into...something.
Does anything exciting happen if you "connect the dots", as it were? I'm struggling to get my internet to load anything more bandwidth heavy than pure text right now.

Exhibit 1 most likely refers to the Taman Shud Case AKA Somerton Man "one of Australia's most profound mysteries" and the source of a famous unsolved code.
Exhibit 3, IMHO I'm taking it at face value as a phantom town, a mysterious anomaly.
POINT A is the alleged location of the S4 facility of Area 51 a huge underground hangar. My understanding is it's a major (super secret) part of the base and central to the UFO and ET research.

Aw shucks. Considering the Somerton Man connection (what a strange read!), this does seem to be them just highlighting random, unexplained mysteries in a jokey way, rather than any cohesive thing.
Still confused about Dental Underground though :\ (admittedly those words are strangely unnerving when used together)

I seriously get a "This Is My Milwaukee" style randomness vibe from the series

There was an episode early on (I am on ep 13 or 14, so somewhere around 5 or 6, I am guessing), where they specifically mention viral marketing, and joke around that some audio that's playing might have something hidden in it.
Just did a cursory search of some podcast transcripts, but couldn't find it.

The Flaky-O's! marketing department must be complimented for the best use of viral marketing in Night Vale...
...Now, I'm not too good at this viral marketing thing, so I can't see all the codes and hidden web addresses that I'm sure are all through that message. I'll leave that to all the dedicated amateurs out there in the listening world!

I doubt anything more is going to happen, unfortunately. I hope those new to Night Vale enjoy the show anyway.
Still... this newly declassified information about Area 51, released today couldn't just be coincidence ... ... could it?
