48 Hours in Censorship
Your PI was one of the players!

48 Hours in Purgatory sounds a lot like the game which was trying to ride off of the popularity of Cloverfield. It's not that their stuff got taken down from here but rather they couldn't control what was said here and asked players to join their (varying) sites which they couldn't maintain to converse free from the appropriate T&Cs of uF.

It was amateur hour all round with censorship, tiered hierarchy and snippets of info with no real detective work required (Sort of like figuring out your PI is a poorly conceived notion).

The actor who played your PI appeared in game as a psychiatrist of sorts seeking to have people face their inner demons. Feel free to check out the linked thread and in future, if the PMs username is memorable to you - FFS post it!

Poor PMing and make no mistake!

So I think this is the website we should all be going to, just trying to get this back to game persepctive.

darkdealings.weebly.com

not navigated round much of it yet. There is loads of bits and bobs on there. Pics and stuff.

( Still laughing, still confused and still a little lost )

What are you confused about?

ETA: PURE META POST!!!!!!! I never played 48hours, and frankly don't have to time to read thru the archives. From what I do see though, this game got rebooted A LOT! WTF?

So, the actor from 48 hours is the detective in the video here. K. Is this 48 hours rebooting again?

Tresbein reposted a FB post from the official 48 hours FB page, something from today. Which only stood out to me because of this travesty.... So i went to their page, and sure enough, on october 15th they post

I've been tasked with passing a message. I have only the vaguest of information, but am told the people who ought to will know what it means: Game on.

this only makes me more annoyed, as this is a PM team who knows the rules here, and couldn't get their shit together in the past either.

48 Hours In Purgatory ARE

I don't recall that PI as a character in 48HIP, but it has been several years since it was active. I don't believe he was in the spinoff Hurts to Heal either.

They're doing some activity for the movie's DVD release and have a blog here: https://www.anonyme.com/Blog/ICON and a twitter account for the PM: https://twitter.com/EyeballSliver There's discussion on the 48 Hours In Purgatory facebook page if anyone wants to join in.

The only thing that is connected is that the ARE was originally seeded in the Cloverfield forum on IMDB. The film company's official website is http://skgfilms.com/

Names, I'm rubbish with. Faces and changed appearances; I'm cursed with remembering.

That actor was involved, in some capacity, during the mess that was 48HIP. A game, if it can be called that, which was an embarrassment to the ARG community.

No cookies/brownies for remembering?

Sorry m0r but I guarantee you're mistaken. Sad

There are no signs that this has anything to do with 48HiP or any other spinoffs. The guy in that video is not an actor from both the movies or the viral campaigns. If everyone is going to be (needlessly) up in arms about it, I can get written word from the PM of 48 that this has no involvement.

That said, this is the weirdest setup for any kind of trailhead. There's really no information besides the stumbled ramblings of what seems like a first time PM and a video that makes about as much sense but for those who are interested, game on.

Well this is a confusing train wreck......

If I may be Meta for a sec.

This launch boggles my tiny mind. I mean it makes no sense as due to it randomly jumping on very old threads you only annoy the mods and you make less people actually see your trailhead, a loose loose option.

Also, this line from their website:

"Howdy there everybody! As some of you have noticed, we have effectively been given the boot from the Unforums! Sorry to anybody my assistant offended, the kid is in the same boat as me when it comes to this ARG stuff."

To get publically told about this and to then draw attention to it and make it into a plot point seems like a really bad idea and convinces me that this isn't just amature (as some amature have issues but still deliver a wonderful over all experience) but someone who refuses to listen or follow the rules.

Just got a tip about this --

Quote:
My name is Richard Engel, and I'm a private investigator in Dallas, Texas. About a month ago I had an interesting case dropped in my lap. Couple of kids went missing back in '08, and their parents wanted me to open their case back up, try and find them some closure, you know?

Well, all of the usual leads dried up, as expected, and the only thing I was left with was something I'm told is your area of expertise.

Going through the kids laptops and personal effects showed that they were involved in some ARG game as puppet-makers, and after doing some digging around, I heard mention of a few resources on the subject. Namely the Unforums, a paper by some Al Brackin guy, and your site, the ARGN Net. I'm not about to read some 300-somethin page paper on ARG games, so I figured you were the person to contact.

(This was followed by a brief acknowledgment and apology for the terms of service violation)

POINT IS THIS: Crap keeps changing on me. Evidence goes missing, posts get deleted, and someone keeps messing with our website. Hell, my assistant even says the size of certain files have been changed.

So here's the deal. My retainer is running out on this case soon, and I'm in need of some help. This ARG stuff isn't my cup of tea. I'm more of a cards and dice kind of guy. If I don't turn up some progress soon, the parents aren't gonna keep me funded, and this case goes cold again.

Out of game context: this is referring to a couple of games Adam Brackin did (either on his own or in supervising his classes at UT-D), starting with Deus City in '07. I don't recall a game that looks/feels like the Dark Dealings screenshots in '08 (I think the only one then was Conspiracy Asylum). Not sure how this would be related to 48HIP...that throws me for a loop.

At any rate, in-game url is darkdealings.com

Huge TINAG feel with this. As in to the point of "I know what an ARG is, and this is not an ARG"... I don't for a second believe "Richard Engel" is a real PI, but trying to come off as real by denouncing any claim of being fake, and understanding why - while an impressive implementation of TINAG for the character - comes off as deceptive (especially if, previously at least, going meta to the point of pretending rules don't exist at all).
*shrug*
I'm torn. Great attempt at being 'real', but sort of comes off as insulting, or at the very least off-putting. Maybe that's the genius of it, maybe that'll be its downfall... dunno!
I just know Brackin's style didn't fly to well here at UF Smile
