On wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouen, there is a paragraph:

Quote:
In the 14th century urban strife threatened the city: in 1291, the mayor was assassinated and noble residences in the city were pillaged. Philip IV reimposed order and suppressed the city's charter and the lucrative monopoly on river traffic, but he was quite willing to allow the Rouennais to repurchase their old liberties in 1294. In 1306, he decided to expel the Jewish community of Rouen, which then numbered some five or six thousand citizens.

For the index I am guessing it might be a grid puzzle.

something like A 6 = 1st line 6 word

The problem is figuring what to use as a source

I thought that as well.. But I don't think it would be referring to a town... Dig deeper there are references to it, but nothing that can help us out.

Poking around here and there, I found a couple of things.
Arranging the letters of 'start at the poles' + 'aruse' gives 'the portals are statues'.

About Syracuse
Wikipedia wrote:
The Collatz conjecture is a conjecture in mathematics named after Lothar Collatz, who first proposed it in 1937. The conjecture is also known as--- the Syracuse problem. The sequence of numbers involved is referred to as the hailstone sequence or hailstone numbers (because the values are usually subject to multiple descents and ascents like hailstones in a cloud), or as wondrous numbers.

Take any natural number n. If n is even, divide it by 2 to get n / 2. If n is odd, multiply it by 3 and add 1 to obtain 3n + 1. Repeat the process (which has been called "Half Or Triple Plus One", or HOTPO) indefinitely. The conjecture is that no matter what number you start with, you shall always eventually reach 1. The property has also been called oneness.

More here
Don't know if it's relevant at all, but interesting coincidence if nothing more Smile

Oh, and Rouennais is apparently some kind of cheese Razz
Will continue poking.

EDIT:
Okay, I tried the Syracuse problem with 28 and 12 and the sequences I got were 12-6-3-10-5-16-8-4-2-1 and 28-14-7-22-11-34-17-52-26-13-40-20-10-5-16-8-4-2-1. From those sequences most probable date I think could be 14-7-22, July 22nd 2014.

Trying to break down the latest email as much as I can - I'm assuming the way our current findings are paired with a question or suggestion of where to go next act as hints or suggested directions. With this in mind, we're being told the map/missing letters puzzle tells us what the portals are, that the missing letters "aruse" are right, and the poles aren't literal. I think Elethamei's "the portals are statues" answer is perfect, great job there! Very Happy
As for the maths page, there's emphasis on the mention of Syracuse in Acts 28:12, a sequence, and St. Lucy. The hailstorm sequence seems perfect for the syracuse and sequence references, but it seems to me like C and V have already been used to get to acts/syracuse. Since the sequence, syracuse and St Lucy all got pointed out together, maybe there's a number related to Lucy to use the sequence on? All I can think of right now is 304, the year of her death (when her eyes closed?)
As for the text, I'm clueless, and with the index. Hopefully the actual chapters will shed some light on how to use it?

I searched a little bit and found that painting in a museum in Rouen.

It combines some "facts" we found already:

1) "To deactivate, use the Rouennais" -> residents of Rouen are called Rouennais.

2) Someone here mentioned St. Lucy and she's on that painting too ...

Yep I know kinda far-fetched Wink

Seems like is goes along with "If you wish to see, close your eyes."

As far as the sequence: someone mentioned a while back (before the st lucy connection) the sequence of 12-13-14 (Dec 13th 2014) well it just so happens that St Lucys feast day is Dec 13th.

I think Elethamei nailed it here.

So to summarize, we are looking for a date and the nature of portals.

DATE:
Acts 28:12 led us to St. Lucy.
St. Lucia's Feast day is 12-13.
"Evil rises on a sequence" would lead us to the date of "12-13-14" or December 13 2014.

NATURE:
The missing letters are "aruse".
Plug those letters into "Start at the poles: ____"
Anagramming that phrase gives us "The portals are statues".

So now we have a date and the nature of the portals. Good job!

Outstanding work everyone, I think we're nearly there. 'The portals are statues' ticks the 'nature of the portals' box for sure.

As for the date, I don't know if we've cracked it yet. wastedtime mentioned 13th December when they first mentioned St Lucy, which prompted the email from The Servant, including these lines:

Quote:
The mention of Syracuse is interesting - it is my belief that 6 of hearts has hit the nail on the head with the reference to St. Lucy.

However, is it not true that evil rises on a sequence?

Which I take to mean that we're very clearly on the right lines but that we don't have the date right yet. The suggestion being that we still need to identify the correct sequence in order to zero in on the date. Unless, as phenexfirf suggests, the sequence in question is 12.13.14. I'll email The Servant and see if we can get some clarification.

Ah, ignore me - it seems that 12/13/14 is indeed correct. Well done, everyone! Here's an email I've just had from The Servant to confirm.

Quote:
I strongly suspect that the portals are indeed statues, and that 12/13/14 is the correct date.

It seems to me that the index will become of more use to us once the information from specific chapters begins to be seen. Of course, it could not hurt to begin identifying groups of 12 which may appear.

As for the Rouennais, I have not made much progress myself.
It would appear to have something to do with deactivating the portals. Perhaps there is something in my previous correspondences which may need to be drawn upon?

The Servant

I'll dig back through our previous messages from The Servant to see what he might be referring to there.

That, my friend, is GENIUS!

And I'm loving the St Lucy connection too, well done all. The best known statue of St Lucy is a silver one that is paraded through the streets on her feast day, it resides in the Cathedral at Syracuse for the rest of the year.

Looking at the Index page, the way the letters and numbers are written out really reminds me of Scrabble tiles (though of course the numbers/letters don't correspond in English), and the "Evil rises on a sequence" page layout reminds me of the board. Doubt it means anything but hey, you never know!

Sorry for the double.
The Rouennais is also a playing card pattern, telling us who the face cards are:

Quote:
THE ROUENNAIS PATTERN
(ANCESTRAL TO THE ANGLO-AMERICAN TYPE)

Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, Clubs

K ALEXANDER, DAVID, CAESAR, CHARLES
Q RACHEL, PALLAS, ARGINE, JUDITH
J LA HIRE, HECTOR, OGIER, JUDAH MACCABEE

Paris pattern, double-ended, 1806 (?) (from D' Allemagne, Antique Playing Cards)

Okay, good to know I was right. Kinda annoys me that the Servant never replies directly at me. I sent them the statue suggestion before I posted it here and they didn't bother to reply me. Ah well, glad they at least reply someone.

Ah, sorry to steal your thunder in that case - apologies. If it's any consolation I didn't receive a reply to my previous email either.

Also, great find SteamPunkV!

Sounds like fun!

I remember I sacrificed my eyes for a game before... Don't worry they grew back...

WTG @Elethamei on the solve! Well spotted!

Looking forward to see where this goes now!

I guess its back to waiting until the 12th of next month?
