[Trailhead] Unnamed Detective Thing
used to be "Need help finishing old ARG. Anyone remember this?"

I'm trying to complete this unfinished ARG I remember playing a few years ago. Unfortunately, I can't remember what it's called nor do I have the old URL or database or archives of it. I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction. Does any of this sound familiar?

- corporate conspiracies and "men in black"
- general conspiracy stuff
- corporate logos mixed into the puzzles
- puzzles tended to be photographs and have a literary basis
- PMs signed their puzzles
- took place 2007 or 2008

Any help's appreciated. I just had this game on my mind lately and was hoping for some closure.

Moved into N&R and merged with other attention seeking posts ~ Pixie

just so we're clear... How can you finish playing an old ARG? Was it really just a puzzle trail? And the PMs signed their names to the puzzles? That really, really doesn't sound like a classic ARG at all. Do you have any pieces saved locally, to show us an example? I do like being able to point people to things in the archives, but the rest of your description is just too generic -- literally too much within the scope and tropes of the genre without being specific enough to track down. However, I'm happy to use our Search function and give it a shot...

I know I can't finish playing it. But it was really sad that the game was never completed and I wanted to finish writing it because the puzzles were really cool. I think it was called something darkness or daring darkness, doing darkness; something like that. The player conversation happened mostly on their site not here but it got taken down. The tone of it shifted about a month in, none of us could figure out if it was a game jack or not, but it got really dark. What I remember about the puzzles was an icon and a nickname of the "pm" and also a title kind of like Perplexcity.

Hey, I've been searching for information on an old game but I'm not sure if this is it. Did this game have puzzles with titles that were photographs, signed by the pms that were icons, and dealt with conspiracies?

Trying to remember a dead ARG

I've been searching the forums here for an arg I played around the same time Cloverfield was running. It had puzzles that were photographs with icon signatures by the pms and a conspiracy focus. Could there be a connection to this game that maybe it never got to because it never finished?

Sorry to trout; I've been searching these forums looking for a dead ARG I played about 5 years ago. It had puzzles that were photographs with icon signatures by the pms and was about conspiracy stuff. Does this sound familiar at all?

Need help identifying a dead aRG

Hey I;ve been searching the forums fo ra while for an ARG I used to play 5 or so years ago. It had photograph puzzles with signature icons for the pms. It dealt with conspiracies. I know it was called darkness something or something to do with dark. Could 'DC' stand for "dark" something? Just wondering. Reading over the content of this game it seems like it could be about conspiracies?

Hey Leery, Dr. Adam Brackin Here. I haven't thought of tCotSA in a long time, but your post activated one of my old ARG spiders so I thought I might help out with your search. I'm afraid that DC stood for Deus City, a game that I made along with a few others for my real Dissertation in 2008. tCotSA was a collaborative effort with one of the greatest puzzle makers I've ever known named Mark Heggen who dovetailed his game into ours in amazing ways. I did a TON of research into pre-2008 games though at that time and also taught a class on ARG that year, so if you are looking for an old game it might be one we did projects on for the class. Check out http://argclass.blogspot.com/ and there might be info there by one of my students, or you might try this out of date game index from back then: http://argclass.blogspot.com/2008/09/arg-glossary-and-index.html Good luck!

Dr. Brackin I really appreciate the help! I will look over you rsite for any reference to a "dark" or "darkness" type game and maybe will find what I'm looking for. I have a topic started over on meta that might fit this better since it is not related to dues city.

wait... you want to finish writing someone else's game??? that's just.... no. please don't do that. Put yourself in someone else's shoes, how would you feel if someone took your IP and did that? If the game imploded, so be it.

and what's more, you don't remember hardly ANYTHING about it, but you think you should write for it????

yeah, just... no.

How would I feel if someone took my IP and added to it? I'd be flattered! It would be the highest form of flattery! Think of it as modding or an expansion only with ARGS. And I do know all about the game as a matter of fact. I only forgot the title. But Ive been searching my odl harddrive and found a few old puzzle jpegs.

so does anybody remember this game's title or what?

Depends if it could be classified as "fan fiction", or intended to be a seemless continuation... *shrug*

Confession time, people. Catherwood and others (http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1019682#1019682), thanks for your attempts to help me dig up the past. Pixiestix, I apologize if you took offense, of course it was never my intent to violate Unforums etiquette. But as you've probably realized, I'm new here. Also, thanks to Thebruce for weighing in.

It has taken a week, but thankfully an ARGer—who asked to remain anonymous—sent me this private message:

Quote:
Leery, I saw where your question got answered with a link to that blog http://argclass.blogspot.com/2008/09/arg-glossary-and-index.html . I scoured the site for you and in the second embedded document at the top of page 137 I think you'll find your answer. I prefer to not get involved, please leave me out of it.

The truth is that I never had any intention of bringing back an old game. I work as an assistant to a private investigator, Richard Engel, who's based out of Dallas, Texas. Recently we were given a case from 2008 that had gone cold. In the spirit of full disclosure, my employer's retainer is about to run out. In our desperation I came to these forums, hoping that these puzzles had some significance and that we could identify the name of the old ARG. I apologize for the deception (and the poor grammar), but we didn't want to reveal our case to the public without good reason.

I'm putting together a website with the information that we've gathered so far, but until then Dick's got more info, and he's put together a quick video for you guys.

Full disclosure my ass. Oh man, you are in for a world of trouble now. I didn't have to see more than 10 seconds of that video to know that's not anything professional. Not to mention your whole story is fishy. If this is some attempt to launch an ARG, you eff'd up man. 1) you rez'd a bunch of threads to cross post your "attempt to find an old ARG" which in and of itself is just bad form, but then it is quickly becoming apparent this was an attempt to grab attention. 2) you posted in character, and multiple times. 3) you launched in meta.

I am moving this thread to N&R and merging the posts from the rez'd threads in with it. what I really want to do is lock it, but that isn't how things are done here. Please read our TOS, as well as "THESE RULES," and finally "THESE FORUM GUIDLINES"

Not only is a "shame on you" in order for bad form, but you broke UF rules. Consider this public flogging your one warning. Don't post any more in this thread, and should you opt to post in any other threads don't post in character nor push your game. If you wish to continue this discussion, PM me.

I slightly lolled at this I confess. Thanks for moving it to news and rumours pixiestix

So wait.. This is a game. Or the startings of a game right?

I'm always up for finding some missing people so like I wouldn't mind playing it if it is indeed a game and not just a case of me doing someone else's research for them lol.

Il keep an eye out but I don't see any tangible contact details but since we know we are waiting on a website lol
