maybe you have part of password correct... I suggest trying "bugporn", and then other "bu________" words.

nice work so far, though Smile

That means that the unarchiving tool you're using has a bug. I don't get that, though:

Code:

$ ./unar.exe -f -p bugmars stinky.arj
stinky.arj: ARJ
  stinky.mp4  (1239830 B)... Failed! (Unknown error)
Archive parsing failed! (Data is corrupted.)
Extraction to current directory failed! (1 file failed.)

Where did you get your build of unar? I'm using the Windows copy over here: http://unarchiver.c3.cx/commandline

I'm using a Unix version (1.8, installed on Mac via Homebrew). I also checked it with the ARJ32 executable on Windows, and I get the same normal failure that you do.

What a tantalizing bug with the unar software! I guess we're back to square one.

Hmm. My build doesn't segfault with "bugmars", but when I was brute-forcing it I found a few other strings:
Code:
unar -f -p oyjyz stinky.arj
outputs
Code:
stinky.arj: ARJ
  stinky.mp4  (1235637 B)... Segmentation fault

I've also found that some other strings have yet another output: using "bb" (no quotes) as the password I get the following error message:
Code:
stinky.arj: ARJ
stinky.mp4  (1235637 B)... unar: Uncaught exception NSInvalidArgumentException, reason: Prefix found

I'm using unar version 1.2-2build1 on Linux (Ubuntu 13.04), installed through apt-get. This must be a very buggy piece of software!

Of course, it COULD be that files are corrupted and thats why we can't extract it, but I somehow doubt it.

It's entirely possible. I don't have access to my Linux machine right now, but I'll see if I can figure out where unar is segfaulting. Maybe that would be a clue.

It would be disappointing if we couldn't make progress because the disks were unreadable.

Remember that we got identical copies of these files off of distinct disks (except the two I couldn't read). So it seems pretty likely that the data provided is the data that we were intended to get.

I'm not getting these errors using ARJ32 for Windows, but I did do some research on the ARJ format; this is a multi-volume archive, so you need to specify that in the command.
For ARJ32:
Code:

arj32 x -v -y -g? stinky.arj

This starts with stinky.arj and finds all subsequent ".a##" files

Converting it to psuedo-base-8, you get:

Quote:
COFFEE WITH A PAT OF BUTTER; OMELET WITH CHEESE AND BACON; HASH BROWNS; TOAST WITH BUTTER AND STAWBERRY JAM

The translation is done by taking two characters at a time, XY, using 'A" as 10 and 'B' as 11. You then take 8*X+Y and convert that to an ASCII character. However, if X is above 8, you instead use 8*X+Y+1.

I know next to nothing about encryption/cryptology, but I found the above text super intriguing.

If you isolate each breakfast-oriented sentence fragment and strip the articles (a, an, the, etc) you end up with a series of short strings of letters. Abbreviations maybe?

CPB; OCB; HB; TBSJ

CPB could refer to cycles per byte, commonly used as an indicator of performance in cryptographic functions (according to Wikipedia).

OCB could refer to OCB mode, a mode of operation for cryptographic block ciphers (again, according to Wikipedia).

No idea on the other two. Maybe HASHBROWNS is pointing towards cryptographic hash functions?

Might be totally off base, but I find it interesting considering the ARJ format uses current clock count in some way to initially encrypt the file (as far as I understand it).

Hopefully this helps... somehow.

Small thing, but is the conversion a copy and paste or was it retyped? Because I just noticed it gives STAWBERRY instead of STRAWBERRY.

This project has been funded as of today. He raised over $72,000 well over what the $60,000 he was seeking.

Good call!

I just used the method that dvorak provided to double check the numbers provided by the bugporn jpegs and the 'R' in 'STAWBERRY' is indeed missing. So, its NOT a typo. I pulled the numbers directly from the image descriptions.

Could be something! 'R' as in 'Rosencrantz,' maybe?

The number that represents 'R' in the image descriptions is 99.
And the decimal value for the ascii value 'R' is 82.

Might come in handy!

Reversed Humming

I'm not entirely sure if the humming audio clip has been "used" yet, but I simply took it and reversed it, and it sounds like it has a little more musicality than it had before.
kernaloftruth_humming_reverse.wav
 Description   kernaloftruth_humming audio clip reversed
 Filesize   448.77KB
    98 Time(s)

Unfortunately, this file is no longer in our archives.

Bruteforcing stinky.arj

So I couldn't make any sense of the information we have at our disposal right now, so I figured that the best I could do was to try to bruteforce the stinky.arj file.

I have started a bruteforce script running from 1-20 length passwords (Won't realistically reach the end anytime soon) trying all passwords from the charset a-zA-Z0-9 (all lowercase letters, all uppercase letters, and all numbers)

So don't bother trying any passwords with less than 6 chars if it doesn't contain a special char (or a space)

I'll post updates as the bruteforce progresses
Current progress: all 7 char passwords

So apparently the program I used crashes around the beginning of the 7 char passwords, I'll return when I have a new method figured out...

Ok I found a new way, this seems to be more stable...

I can't help but notice that Rosencrantz ends in "antz"

As in, y'know, bugs.
