Trailhead or just weird promotion? http://huvrtech.com/ My boyfriend pulled up this website advertising hoverboards and featuring a lot of actors from the Back to The Future series. I've only played one ARG (TIMM -- non of us will ever be the same) so I don't have a lot of experience but this kind of looks like one to me.
I haven't seen Back the the Future, but I guess this ad would suggest they are making a (fourth?) movie for the franchise, and the counter suggests that the movie comes out in December. Maybe that's all there is to it? After all aren't trailheads supposed to be a bit more cryptic?
Anyway it's a sweet video and really well made sight. Worth a look even if it's nothing.

I saw this, too, and when Reddit cried promotion, I came running to UF.
The site doesn't provide any insight on the technology used, commercial release projections, or anything useful. Whois returns a private registrar in Kirkland Washington.
There is an EPS file on the site under the Press Kit on the About Us tab. Something in there maybe?
Don't really have time to break it down right now, but I'd like to think this is real. Some day...

*drive-by posting* I have only one thing to say to this.

More and more info is popping up across the Interwebs. Here is one saddening sample of signs the videos were faked.
But we know better than to shrug and walk away. With Christopher Lloyd, Tony Hawk, Billy Zane and others involved, this is obviously leading up to something.
Or maybe this will fall in line with the rest of my ARG experience and be nothing really in particular.
Edit: One more thing - there is a counter-like graphic at the top of the site, noting a "destination time" of December 2014.

I'm following them on facebook, and I sent an e-mail asking for more information on the people who worked on the project/what they have worked on before. No reply, but the facebook page posted

Thanks for all your enthusiastic responses! We've received a lot of emails and comments, so we'd like to address the most popular questions:
1) Yes! This is real! We look forward to showing you just how real The HUVr is with a series of public live events coming soon to major US cities.
2) Yes! It is safe! Your safety is our highest concern. We wouldn't release a product that wasn't rigorously tested to the highest industry standards. When used properly, The HUVr is actually safer than riding a bike!
3) Pre-orders will be available within the month and we hope to ship in December of 2014. Yes, we will ship internationally!
4) We're working with the manufacturer to bring the price point down to something everyone can afford. Based on your excitement, it's looking like we can get there!
5) Yes, it's as fun to ride as it looks!

about an hour ago...I'm 99.9% sure that it isn't a real product. Even if it seemed plausible there's just something off about every aspect of the presentation. I sent an FB message to the facebook page asking for more information about the live events...so far nothing.

I 100% agree with you. They're probably swimming in PR requests right now, so don't be surprised if your e-mail isn't their top priority.
Hoax, ARG, or setup for a national disaster - who knows? All I can say is, "Great Scott!!"
Also, is it legal to affirm that a product is real knowing that it is not?

This is the internet baby, they can do what they want.
I'm pretty sure I've been a part of an ARG where they were selling Robots (or something akin to that), claiming they were real and awesome and whatnot.
anyway; I hope something comes of this. it looks fantastic.

Well, actually this is what they say in the Legal Terms section:

That's really disappointing. It could have been a really great start to something.

Is just knowing that funny or die is behind it really definitive proof that it's nothing? I mean they haven't come out and said anything, people just figured it out. Maybe there will still be live events FoD has the money, Probably just being wishful though.

Just because it's a publicity stunt doesn't mean it's just a prank. Still, it's good to know what type of thing we might look forward to - as in, we know it's probably not a real hoverboard.
It's obviously something worth keeping an eye on IMO.

In my mind, it's all rather whimsical. My curiosity is piqued as to whether or not there's more to it, only because of the map and trail shown of Justin Herman Plaza. (see attached)
I don't know the area and am nowhere near it; if I were, I might take a leisurely walk along the blue line with my eyes peeled. Is anyone available from San Francisco willing to check it out?
It would be a shame if it's nothing more than a prank. http://huvrtech.com/ got so much attention, so quickly; I'd view it as a lost opportunity for a great rabbit hole.

I actually saw an article trending on Facebook titled "Funny or Die is behind..." before I even saw anything about Huvr itself. :/
Funny thing is it was only trending for a couple hours earlier today and I can't seem to find the link on FB right now.

I saw one of my skater friends post it in my newsfeed, so I had to come back to the forum to check. My original thinking was perhaps an ARG/promotion for a Skateboard infused with newer tech and Not real by any means. I perused the site looking for anything out of the ordinary and voila- ABOUT US was utterly screaming "hoax" full of excessive and technical legal jargon, with some loopholes in it and of course further down the bottom was the FOD link. It would've been interesting if there was a faux kickstarter, but that most likely would've had negative ramifications for them...feels good to be back though.
