Know what "aphid" & "missa" are tho not together. Maybe anagramming them to "(a) amidships" was my brain melting but since it's nautical thought I'd best share.

Good thought Amandel but that doesn't bring "Monte Cristo" into the equation and empire control said that was important.

G'Morning R! Reckon am more *boggled* than I thought. What is your take from Myrovh's hint leading to the nautical almanac & then determining 261° to be 23:00?
Beaut job on finding that nautical almanac btw! Shd have lead with that but my brain IS melting, e.g. even saved a scan of p.261 of "The Count Of Monte Cristo" b/c it mentions a felucca and anagrammed MC into a lunar "trisect moon". Am truly looney b/c of this cipher. Scratched the idea of having a montecristo sandwich at lunch.

So, here's the sundial string cipher solve . With a banging headache followed the directions carefully using R's 23. Gave props all around on our Empire Agents site.

Grats Amandel. Thank god for that. For my sake could you.post the method of solved once your headache has abated! How on earth was Monte Crist involved....
If the RTL is on tonight I will instruct Ambrose to try Tutankhamun on the linker.
EDIT** Ignore above as Amandel had been poisoned by russians!
Now back to onions and lumberjacks with sister Mary![/sup]

As for Sister Mary I am leaning towards something medical with the nod to Jack the Ripper, (tree) surgery and eyeballs peel like onions.
Don't know why that sprang to mind.

Nice thinking, R. Since "Tomb of Tut" inspired Carter would you ask Ambrose to also try Dumas which maybe inspired the other Alexander(Du Pre)?....then maybe we can finally lay Monte Cristo to rest. Since I'd never used a Rotate cipher I just followed the directions above it step by step. Hi Spoonhead! Am clueless re the PW.

amandel, I hate to be bearer of bad news
I went to site and followed directions, also...and I got the same result....but.....
following the instructions provides an example of how to use the cipher tool, it does not use the cipher text we were given by Ambrose...

Well we have an hour to get this now.
Another tip from Myrovh
Quote:
I find it ironic that a famous fictional prisoner (sailor as I recall) never counted his days whilst locked up and yet when he escaped he became a Count. Just a play on words really still we gods love that sort of thing til the comets come home.
There is the easy way and the hard way, it really depends upon your perspective which is which. One just needs to unravel the last to get at the truth.

When cutting onions I found it best to rotate them, got a handy little tool that rotates as it cuts.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Amidships
all along!
Or like my guess for the previous puzzle the PM took pity on us. Will have to ask them in the rollup session.

[20:00] <AgentRussell> Hi Ambrose. Seemed strange not to talk to you last night hope you are all ok
[20:00] <AmbroseR> Yes we are all fine thank you
[20:00] <AmbroseR> Been trying different password all day
[20:01] <AgentRussell> we thought we had a breakthrough earlier but unfortunately the agent who supplied the information seems to have been infected by a faulty vaccination
[20:01] <AgentRussell> we suspect russian interference
[20:01] <AmbroseR> Oh dear, I hope the agent is okay.
[20:02] <AgentRussell> yes she is recovering but sadly we have no suggestions at present
[20:02] <AmbroseR> Do you have any possibilities?
[20:02] <AgentRussell> although we feel we are very close
[20:02] <AmbroseR> what have you found ?
[20:03] <AgentRussell> we have worked out the meaning of the sextant
[20:03] <AgentRussell> as 23
[20:03] <AgentRussell> this was the time on that day of the moon at that angle
[20:03] <AgentRussell> 23:00
[20:03] <AmbroseR> Monte Cristo? Emma spotted that she has been reading it at school
[20:03] <AgentRussell> yes we also found that when the cipher was reversed
[20:04] <AmbroseR> Probably just 23 if it is on a Sundial
[20:04] <AmbroseR> The Count of Monte Cristo
[20:04] <AmbroseR> Perhaps it is as simple as Count 23?
[20:05] <AgentRussell> yes so we tried braking it down into chunks of 23 and the smae agent spotted "amidships" which is nautical
[20:05] <AmbroseR> But you said you didn't have anything at least I try that...give me a moment to set it up.
[20:07] <AmbroseR> Its works!
[20:07] <AgentRussell> oh my god, the agent will be so happy
[20:07] <AgentRussell> what happened?
[20:07] <AmbroseR> the screen has change to: DERN Defence Fail Safe Powering Up
[20:08] <AgentRussell> any change on the power readings?
[20:08] <AmbroseR> Hold on...just copying the data to over to the linker...
[20:08] <AmbroseR> Not sure if this will work.
[20:08] <AmbroseR> DERN details by Du Pre Alexander What do we know about the DERN? An intelligence from another dimension maybe a parallel one, are they related to Cthulhu who knows for sure. Are they superior to us definitely not otherwise we would be extinct by now. We know that the One is scared on them which at least should give us pause for thought. They however are obviously a threat! Over the millennia they have sent several organic i
[20:09] <AmbroseR> There's more I'll have to send another way
[20:09] <AmbroseR> Its says Tick-Tock at the bottom though
[20:09] <AgentRussell> is there a password input interface again?
[20:10] <AmbroseR> No just the text at the moment
[20:10] <AmbroseR> Think we are meant to do something
[20:11] <AgentRussell> turn the hour glass
[20:11] <AgentRussell> it may have been activated
[20:11] <AmbroseR> Of course, hold on.
[20:12] <AmbroseR> Okay it has turned 90 degrees but no more and a cube has come down from ceiling but stopped halfway down.
[20:12] <AgentRussell> anything on the cube, what is it made of?
[20:12] <AmbroseR> Hold on the Cube dial on the Generator is flashing red, I'll try and turn the dial
[20:13] <AmbroseR> moved half way and the Dial (then flash green) the energy has jumped up to 35 but is trembling back and forth.
[20:13] <AgentRussell> how about the other levers on the panel? Or try the hourglass again?
[20:13] <AmbroseR> Ground is shaking and the tesla coils are going haywire
[20:14] <AgentRussell> Get the children away from them and towards the door
[20:14] <AmbroseR> Mary go back into the other room...
[20:14] <AmbroseR> Emma Mary has collapsed drag her back...
[20:14] <AgentRussell> protect yourself you can use the lead lined suit if need be
Thank god i suggested your anagram, also took me a moment or two to remember the hourglass Damn empire control cutting me off!!!

At myself Can't *happy dance* with this red goose egg on my arm 'tho really <3 the heroic mythos you've built around my mishap, Russell. *giggles* If Tyche (aka our PM) is kind we may never know but quite agree we must ask in the rollup-chat after this chapter is totally complete. These cliffhangers are killing me...
