Next time I get a speeding ticket or something I'll blame it on Slender Man and hopefully spread the word.

...yet he has a point. You can't just be blaming your mistakes on creepypasta characters. This wasn't any Slender-mythos creator's fault. I would say its the girls fault, and the parents who have raised them improperly. There are things that kids shouldn't see without parental guidance. The parents should've made it clear to the kids that they shouldn't believe everything they read, and plenty of stuff on the internet is false.

Good youtube video I found that really puts OUR perspective into the public view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuUl3IBIZog

If anyone questions your Slenderman love due to this tragic event show them that video.

Gotta love how not a single article is even remotely similar... Silly media.

No one here should have to feel bad about it though, it's a case of bad parenting is all. When I was a kid I was terribly horrified of the pre-internet version of the skin changer. We went camping all the time, and around the fire I was told the story. I was disturbed all weekend long, when I finally went home though my parents immediately noticed something was wrong. That night at dinner I was explained about how some stories are stretched and made more gruesome to create a horrifying effect. Lot's of people find it fun to scare, and to be scared. Here I am today, not murdering my friends to earn the respect of a mythical creature.

If anyone should be locked up, it should be the parents imo. If only the foster system wasn't crap...

Guys...this kind of thing happened before. It's called "Copycat Crime"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copycat_crime

In a nutshell, somebody, usually with mental health issues, will try to "copy" a previous crime or ONE SEE IN FICTION. This isn't the author's fault, because how was HE supposed to know? And what should he do about it? Stop writing creepy stories?

I'm not saying that there are stories out there that glorify violence, but in case of the Slender Man mythos, Slender Man is a BAD DUDE. You're NOT supposed to root for him. Anybody who thinks he's REAL is either really stupid or has mental health problems.

We can't use this as an excuse to ban creepypastas, that's actually a serious violation of the first amendment. I would, however, use this as a cautionary tale for parents to keep an eye on how they raise their kids, and what they see online. When you are a parent, you have to draw a fine line between right and wrong, fiction and reality, normal and insanity. It is your responsibility to be a role model for your child.

That's a fairly informative and non-judgmental article.

Can anyone point to a news article that has been published so far that actually is putting the blame for this attempted murder on "creepypasta" - as opposed to merely reporting the fact that the assailants said they did it to make slender man happy?

Give it time, it isn't every day that the media inform themselves about a subject, particularly when a tragedy occurs. People are still misinformed about the Isla Vista killings. I did not want to bring it up here and I do apologize.

When I first told my Dad about this, he was actually kinda amused at my fear (I dressed up as Slender Man for Halloween), and he joked that I had "Groupies". I don't think I explained the situation properly, though. He said that they had to be insane in order to commit a crime like that.

Later, though, after he read the news article, his mood shifted. He told me that Slenderman has nothing to do with this, at all.

Instead, he just pointed to the two girls on the screen. "This here. THESE are your real monsters...this is evil. What these girls have done is absolutely horrific."

Although the guy who is taking the biggest toll out of this most of all is Victor Surge. I bet he's terrified.

Absolutely, and I don't blame him at all. If a kid was almost murdered by fanatical devotees of some story I wrote for fun, I'd be feeling lower than whale crap.

This is completely off-topic, and a probably inappropriate rant to have at this time, so I put it into a spoiler:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Do we really need more faulty publicity claiming that the Tall Man is a creepypasta, when we all know that It isn't? I mean, I thought that we finally had gotten rid of that misconception when the Slender craze died down, and now we have major media outlets misreporting these things...ugh.

Seriously, even the cursory usage of a search engine points to the mythos itself, rather than the creepypasta website.

And I would also like to reiterate my condolences for the family of the survivor, and the survivor herself, of this horrible event.

I like how in the article, they say that the Lavender Town Syndrome is about a fictional town that tried to cover up mass child suicides. They are so clueless.

I can't agree more, because of this negative light we're gonna have another "Slender" episode in the mythos, even worse we may have people who are as misled as these two girls who start joining our community thinking that we're the "cool kids" who do everything we write...this is a giant fiasco.

I would like to also say that I do feel terrible about what happened and I truly hope the best for the families, but the opinions I expressed in that spoiler still stand.
