UnFiction Wiki - A Tool for Trails and Guides?

per some discussion in #unfiction, we've opened up a WikiWiki as an experiment in how a community as a whole can be responsible for Trails and Guides, as opposed to a single moderator who frequently becomes overburdened.

http://www.seedwiki.com/page.cfm?wikiid=1038&doc=UnFiction

What is a WikiWiki, you ask? It's a collection of open pages, which anyone can edit. In other words, a giant whiteboard for the community. That, of course, is a simplified analogy.

The best way to explain WikiWiki is to experience WikiWiki. Drop by. Peruse. Contribute. We'll see how it develops.

okay, I played around with trying to create a guide for Noah Boddy just to see how things work. Ran into two problems...one might be because it's a 'seed' area. Anyway, couldn't figure out how to insert an image. And my goodness, don't save anything until you're done! You can't get the interface back with all the nifty buttons...it's all in code when you go to edit something that's been saved. Either that, or I did something seriously wrong.

Over all tho I don't think this thing has a huge learning curve. Love it.

one of the nice things about wikis is that most of it is plaintext.
If you type a URI without any HTML tags, it converts the URI to a link. If that URI happens to be an image file, it displays the image. So the phrase:

Code:
...there is this image http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/files/117_1036631225.jpg labeled Scarlett.jpg...

will display as:
...there is this image labeled Scarlett.jpg...

Now, as for the editing/saving problems you had? I'm not particularly liking SeedWiki's implementation. I've encountered a number of differences now, than there were when I first looked at it a couple of months ago. It used to have configurable menus & navigation. Now it's just the one style, which I don't find as intuitive as before.

In the long run, I doubt we'd want to keep a wiki at SeedWiki. However, I think it does serve it's purpose as an example, and as a place to play around with the concept.

What a coincidence! I just set up two wikis for Metafilter and my New Mars magazine on Saturday, and I was intending to create one for immersive gaming. Since you guys have already started, I've decided to create one at mssv.net, which should be much better in the long run than Seedwiki. You can see it at http://www.mssv.net/gamewiki.cgi

Have fun!
