How to make tentacles?

I'm working on a Slender series (already have my Slenderman) and I wanna know how to make tentacles that will be able to move around, but not just fall off or look too big (I'm too cheap to buy after effects). I was thinking of using pool noodles or foam pipes. Any suggestions?

It depends on how you want it to look you could try black ropes ... that might look spooky ... any way it depends on what editing program you use

I don't use any editing program other than Audacity, Movie Maker, and iMovie. So I can't really make them flail using an effect. After Effects costs too much. I'm just planning to make them reach out then sink back in or something.

How are you going to even do distortion then? Are you just going to data bend the footage (I'm guessing not because of how difficult that is) or just sonify it? In either case you probably won't get any sort of variety. You don't need AE you could just get something cheap like the consumer version of vegas (or video studio or something like that). If you can't afford that try stop motion, and if you tell me that you can't do that then honestly I don't think you should be doing this.

What about Apple Motion? Basic compositor, not nearly as powerful as AE but can definitely achieve the effect you're going for, as well as adding distortion. Going for $50 on the Apple website, I love it. Easy interface, user friendly. lots of tutorial documentation.

Also, might as well throw this out there, I tried a tentacle effect once a couple years ago. Didn't get very far in the testing phase, but I composited this in Motion with graphic rendering from Cheetah3D, a small Mac only 3d modeling/compositing software. Retails for $70 but if that's still too pricey, their trial mode has all features fully unlocked, just disables saving. So you can still pull off specific shots that you want.

That's the mockup I did. I didn't like how clunky it felt and how few tentacles there were, might've darkened them but ended up not following through.

Another idea that may sound complicated (and would only work with Motion/any other compositor) would be to build a mockup of a single tentacle (which I think people just make black by default, so there you go) and shoot it on any flat colored wall while wiggling it around. Key out the backdrop, scale the tentacles according to what you want and motion track them onto your SM.

And in a worst case scenario, ask a friend, but out an add on Craigslist, anything. Don't let a little thing like money get in the way of realizing your tentacle dreams.

Yeah I use databending and visual effects. They show good results when used uniquely. It's pretty easy actually and I have a weird yet pretty good technique to make it about a little bit better than EMH. I'm considering stop motion or just hiding someone behind my Slenderman.
