Slenderman's appearance
An interesting reference for those making a series

Something that I've been wanting to ask the community here for a while.

In vlogs, movies and art, how do you think slenderman should look?

I know it doesn't really matter but I'm curious in knowing how people perceive him in their minds and what features they think he should or shouldn't have.

I ask this because many series do it so differently, and as well as that which one has the best costume/rig.

Should he have a straight mannequin face? Eye sockets? Cheek bones? Red tie? Black tie? Normal hands? Tendril hands?

Although I don't think that it has the same shock value upon repeated viewings (and, again, I know that MH's TO is more a slender-related-or-inspired character than Slendy himself), I liked the Entry #60 close-up because it looked as if there was something potentially malleable about TO's face (or lack of it), that maybe it could look like something familiar to someone (a fear, maybe--or maybe like a rakshasa, that clouds people's minds and appears much friendlier, like someone known, so it can come in for the kill--maybe there's a perversion of someone known there, because we really don't know what Jay saw on the video--we only saw the video). But on camera it doesn't show up?

If you'll be employing an actor rather than a doll of some kind, I've taken the liberty of doing a search for "people dressed like Slenderman" to look for trends. Most common is a full-black suit, black shoes, white shirt, red tie is most popular; white gloves, and....some kind of giant condom or something stretched over the head/face area, I guess.

From my unscientific research, it seems as if subdued facial contours - cheeks, nose, brow, shallow eye recesses - that are completely white and devoid of detail are more popular than a completely flat and featureless face.

I don't really care. I've seen him without any facial features, with facial features (e.g., Tribe Twelve), with tentacles, without tentacles, black tie, red tie, blue tie... It all varies between stories, and I think that's part of the magic of the character. As long as he has a suit, a tie, no face, and isn't fat, I'm good.

One thing that I haven't really seen in a long time, but I would like to see, is a spidery form of the Slender Man. Just Another Fool went down that road a little, but I don't think anyone else has explored it in a blog or a vlog.

For example, look at this completely terrifying gif:
http://whofortedblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/slenderbeast.gif

I also like the concepts where his arms branch off into tentacles or branches, such as in the images below. This portrayal hasn't been used yet in any blogs or vlogs that I know of, but I think that it has potential. I especially like how it makes It seem more tree-like.

And you should probably tag this as [META].

Wrinkled faceless head, sort-of normal hands with long fingers, lots and lots of tentacles and a black tie.

So, basically, this:

One thing I've also seen that's rarely used is Slendy distorting the physical area around himself, along with himself and things he touches. It's a really cool effect, but it's extremely hard to pull off, I'd imagine.

...something tells me most of the above is difficult to pull off.

I second this. Variety is the spice of life. But I would say that I tend to view it as creepier if he:

*Has some kind of abnormal hand. Some people don't like claws, but I don't mind them. Marble Hornet's "flippers" seem to be well-received all around.
*Has contours that suggest that he could have a face, but he really doesn't. Bonus points if this makes the eyes sunken or the brow drawn together.
*Chalk white head.

Tentacles on his back I actually think are kind of hokey. It works better when they're part of his arm, or come out of nowhere, or something. Also, his tentacles could do with some definition. Like maybe they have ridges if viewed close up, or something.

What makes a difference to me, more than appearance, is action.

When it comes to movement, "unusual" is the word that comes to mind. Jerky or sudden movements are creepy, as well are movements that seem to serve no purpose but to be vaguely threatening. The "head tilt" is a common example of the latter.

The thing about "distortion" is that it seems to work best when there's a theme. For instance, if it's supposed to be "radiation," then have it have affects similar to radiation damage in people, animals, etc. If it's supposed to be some kind of "distortion in space/time," then we should know that this is something that the characters actually deal with, not just on the camera.

As far as seldom used concepts go, I could go on & on about potentially interesting ones, but just relating to appearance, Victor Surge has responded to comments regarding earlier versions of Slenderman that have a warped face with "it tries."

I haven't seen it often but I really like it when his face is blurred or fuzzy as opposed to blank or with suggested facial features. I think it ties in well with video distortions, and also suggests that his face is so horrific that your mind blanks it out. I'm a fan of mind screw Smile
I'm not a huge fan of him with a warped face- I think it reminds me too much of Silent Hill and other monsters so he seems less unique.

Tentacles- I like any kind really, but especially ones that look like tree branches. And- haven't seen this too often either- but when you're in a wooded area and a branch moves, and then you realize that it's actually part of him- I think that adds a lot to the creepiness and otherness of Slenderman

I second this. Especially when you notice that the original mythos mention him having a face that looks different to everyone, but you only see him as faceless on camera.
As for the tentacles, I must admit, they do look cool, but they should only be used when during those times when you KNOW Slendy is just gonna rush at you. Or if they're just at the edges of the screen, closing in on you.

Well it depends on what program you use to create distortion.
Any program that has Keying,Masks, and motion tracking would make a centralized distortion effect alot simpler then it might seem, the trick would be making it look good/using it in a cool way.

A short flick on the Youtube channel "BlackBoxTV" called "Proxy:A Slenderman Story."

Wouldn't it be boring if every version of Slendy was basically the same?

...I think this is appropriate for this thread, as the old How to Make a Convincing Slender Man thread is dead.

I think the most important thing to avoid is blatantly making it look like a dude in a costume. Is he supposed to be humanoid? Of course, but his facelessness is not a mask, it's supposed to be organic. We call it "turkey-neck" -- be careful, whether it's a suit or a cloth mask or whatever, you must avoid it bunching up around the tie / neck region. An otherwise formidable costume can be ruined if it stretches too much with the neck movements.

I'll use something that I... have personal experience with to display. We got incredibly lucky with this shot. It's one of my favorites, really, but if it was a straight-on standing shot, look closely at the neck and how stretched it is. He looks like a tube, if it's not properly proportioned to the body.
