[TRAILHEAD] The Riddle of the Tree Man

New series. It's been around for a week and has six videos. So far, there is only one protagonist.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The acting is solid, and the video editing seems to be decent. The first couple of videos contain inside jokes and references (probably the most obvious ones are in "Alex").

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you look closely in the videos prior to "Just a Mark," you might notice a familiar shape...

Wow, this is actually kind of unique...I mean, you don't see much with a film style like this, even if the CG slenderman was a bit bad. We don't have much backstory on Hero, and that could make him dangerous. For example,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
in Alex, Hero has blood on his hands before he reaches into the tree.

I kind of like when the protagonist is creepy or dangerous, similar to AntedIlluvianOne.

This is surely one to keep an eye on, and the story might get pretty interesting.

Meh, I really don't understand this--why in the second video they played the same clip twice? And it was too long too--most of its just him stuttering and talking to some guy on a phone. And the descriptions are weird, too. I guess it leads up to some kind of code or something--but I'm not interested much.

I think the point of replaying the clip was to show the figure in the background again. Also, I presume that the dialogue there is important.

I think the series isn't supposed to make a whole lot of sense right now. It literally jumps into it, no backstory or anything. It is like jumping into the middle of a movie, after the character development. I guess that takes away from it a little, but I think it makes it more interesting.

Another entity has already been hinted at twice, and that already makes me like it more. This one just has an original feel to it, I guess. I mean, most ARG's are pretty similar in the way they begin and play out, but this one reminds me a lot of that period of EMH where videos didn't match up, and everything was out of order.

Although, CG needs some work...that isn't the most important aspect though...I mean, DarkHarvest's slenderman is a real person, so you don't even need CG to make something good.

On this exciting new episode, we learn Hero knows too much due to outside help and needs to shut up and stop trying to find answers before any unwanted individuals need to intervene. We also learn that any overly helpful comment will be ip tracked and the poster will be dealt with, however, we have yet to learn how to disable comments on videos. Don't tune in next time, because if Hero's smart, he won't make another video!

"We also learn that any overly helpful comment will be ip tracked and the poster will be dealt with"

Wait, hold on a second, they're tracking my IP address?!

Its possible to go to far with an ARG...you can't just start stalking your fans like that, invading their privacy.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm pretty sure that it is just a fun aspect. I highly doubt that the creator is actually tracking IP Addresses.

EDIT:
OOG
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I confirmed with the creator--there is no invasion of privacy going on.

That response from them more than anything else has convinced me to check this series out. Preemptively subscribing before I watch it tonight.

I don't know how the uploader knows you, knife (probably through this thread), but I thought the warning about overly helpful comments was in reply to me and ThroughTheFacelessMask's comments:

Quote:
Hero, this does not explain enough...for example, how would your brother and you have the same birthmark? That doesn't happen... What about the sounds that night of the Fox video, and the figure you could see in the end of the phone call? What of the blood on your hands when you saw the tree? Surely you don't think we missed that it was on there before you touched it... And the biggest mystery here, who is tree man? Is he the figure at the end of this video? And who is the other? Maybe the other is the one who made that weird noise in the Fox video. You weren't wrong, there is no way that is a birthmark.

and his:

Quote:
OK... I may be the worst person ever to comment on one of these, seing as well lets face it, you ever see our stuff you'll know Im a total skeptic. But dude, if you haven't checked your video since the upload, you may want to get on that, cause... there's something you may wanna see.

But now to bring up something about the latest video...the "bad CG," I had been mentioning was apparently fake in the universe. Hero added it in, as an attempt to stop the channel...

But "uploader," I guess we could call him, seems to have had a sudden change in heart. In Just a Mark, he said it was far from over, and seemed a little bit encouraging...but...

In Continue, this is not the case. Uploader wants no helpful comments, and says that if Hero is smart, he won't upload another video...my theory is that Hero and Uploader are the same person. Hero is the man in the videos, but uploader comes out when making the descriptions.

Think about it, Hero addresses US in the videos, but uploader speaks in third person about Hero. How could Hero be making these videos, be conscious of his channel, but not be the one who writes the descriptions? Schizophrenia? Habit type Patrick/Michael type scenario? I don't know, but unless uploader is changing the descriptions after the video is uploaded, it makes sense. I guess "describer," would be a better word really, but that doesn't sound as cool at all.

Maybe this is the case, maybe not, but I'd also like to address something mentioned in Alex. When the footage replays, part of the dialogue says "If I were seeing things, I still wouldn't be paranoid, because I don't have a history of hallucinations." In Fox, and more notably, Branches, a loud shriek can be heard on camera. But when hero turns to where the sound seem to be coming from, nothing is seen. Nothing is there, but he turns, and becomes terrified, saying "what was that thing," or "I don't want to run into that thing again." This implies that

A. Hero is hallucinating things, and adding sound in later, making him a liar, or..

B. Hero can see things outside of our world, that the Camera can not pick up. Things that the camera will pick sound off of, but not image.

Basing my knowledge on different slenderman based ARG's, I'd say it was the second one.

Hero is quite the protagonist, isn't he? We still have yet to know what on earth happened to his brother, who appears in Up She Rises, although you only hear him...huh.

EDIT: I got the same message from him Knifeblade. Except for the "you in particular part." signed by "_U_ .G
M"...

He thinks it's his friend messing with the channel. I doubt it. I'm ditching my statement about Uploader being him though. Seems too irrational to think that at this point.

But someone is still fucking with the channel, despite the fact he seems to have written the description. The video was edited, and it doesn't seem to mean anything his normal self would tell us.

Still wondering if the blood on his hand is going to have something to do with this.

The camera did pick up something, though, in //:Fox. That branch-looking thing at the end of it swooping towards Hero. Still don't know what it is, but there is definitely something there.

The clue to what is legitimately supernatural and what isn't appears to be the sound that accompanies it. I'm not sure what it means, but hopefully we'll get answers eventually.

Yeah, I didn't notice the one in Fox until after posting that. It does not appear in Branches, though. Speaking of Branches, this is one of the only scary ARG episode I have seen in a while. The blood and stick in his arm effects were really well done.
