TIMELINE, PART 2:
January 2014 - present

1/21/2014: The agent system returns, but all agent codes save for 33334 appear to be long lists of random numbers being read out. 33334 was listed in Robby's Pennsylvania drop as the "reverse agent code", and it accepts DTMF input after a tone.

1/23/2014: Troy seems to be feeling a little more talkative than usual, and we are able to get some information out of him. Transcripts of the calls:
Quote:
MD: Message desk?
Gwraspe: *hello etc.* 90024
MD: 90024. OK, just a moment.
Gwraspe: Whilst you're inputting, can you still hear me?
MD: Hi, yes, I can hear you.
Gwraspe: You wouldn't happen to know anything about the offset at all?
MD: The offset?
MD: I don't, sorry, I don't...
Gwraspe: OK thanks, have you noticed any change in your system when getting a response? *asked this due to changes with AS*
MD: Um... nothing... in particular, I guess. It's slow as usual.
Gwraspe: No differences or anything strange about the way the system gives you the response or the response format?
MD: Um... heh. Well, that's a response itself. We've been having... some problems with the unusual messages, but as far as I know, those are not... those are not messages intended for people who call. So, um, but it's different, it's different, the response actually comes as sort of a block, and so, I'm pretty sure... nothing, nothing has changed, um, in that regard.
Gwraspe: A 'block'? *just prying further to gain more insight into system*
MD: Well... it's, it's... it's a table of text, you know, the number, um, and the response text. Occasionally there's other things, um, usually not, but... this, this terminal software is really... *laughs* It's not, um... *laughs* Well, it's... they had different ideas about how terminals should behave, whenever this was written in the 70s or something, where *laughs* and um... *sighs* Yeah, it... I don't know. It... *sighs* It's...
MD: No. No, I don't know exactly how to describe it, but it's... *laughs* We get these sort of messages that scroll by, and then we get these, um, just... tables of text, that are obviously what we're supposed to read, so... you know, that part is very clear, but there's sort of all this other stuff that scrolls by, um, that... *laughs* as far as I know, we're just supposed to ignore, but we can... visually we can pick it out, because the way it, it doesn't scroll like a normal, um, I mean just a text terminal, a DOS prompt, or, you know, a bash shell or whatever. It... it actually, um, pages, so that you get like half a screen at a time, um, and so when it fills up to the bottom, it erases the top half? *laughs* It's a very weird, sort of, I'm sure there was a good reason to do it this way, you know, a million years ago when this system was designed, but now it's, it's very strange.
Gwraspe: Some real stone-age stuff!
MD: Yes.
MD: I think this is sort of a, a dead branch on the evolutionary tree of computers. *laughs*
Gwraspe: I share your pain, I have plenty of experience with badly outdated technology. Good thing you can have a couple of beers while you're there anyway!
MD: *laughing*
MD: OK! Here we go, we have a response for 24488, and that is Selkirk. That's S-E-L-K-I-R-K.
Gwraspe: I have another urgent code here, can I just give you it now rather than calling back? It'd be much easier for us.
MD: It... it, it... I'm sorry, it doesn't actually give me a prompt until another call comes in. So, I'm afraid you'll have to call back. OK.

Quote:
MD: Message desk?
Gwraspe: *hello etc.* 33334
MD: 33334. OK, just a minute.
Gwraspe: Do you know if there are any other means of contacting you? Can I get an e-mail address or anything?
MD: Um... no, it's just... this phone, I, I, uhh... it's the only way... uhh...
Gwraspe: I ask as a lot of the time I don't get an answer and when I do it has always been your good self, are you the sole employee for this service?
MD: *laughs* Well, I'm the only one doing this contract. I mean, I have coworkers, but they're not... they're not... we've had people working it in the past, but it's just me now. Um... so, yes. I...
MD: *laughs* Uh, yeah. It... I'm... I don't have my own office, but, I only have to share it with one other person normally, so, so we can get away with... with plenty.
MD: Yeah, no, I mean, he's just coding, so he doesn't have to be on the phone like me.
Gwraspe: Err, was that 'coding' you said?
MD: Programming. Yes.
Gwraspe: You should get him to fix the slow software on your system!
MD: Uh, well, it's uh... it's out of our hands. We... we have a leased line, it's just a phoneline, that the terminal software attaches to, and we don't have any control over the other end.
Gwraspe: Force him to code a plugin or something to hurry it along!
MD: Yeah, I suppose we could write our own terminal emulator or something for it.
Gwraspe: Yeah, at least that way you don't have to spend all shift getting frustrated with a slow system which means you don't have to smoke as much weed to wind down when you get home!
MD: *laughs*
*long silence*
MD: OK. Uhh... 33334 is zero.
Gwraspe: Ah, erm, you have one more three than it should be!
MD: Oh... the, um... *chuckles* You're looking for three 3s and a 4? Uh, yeah, that's what I have. *chuckles* It's 33, 33, 4. That is correct.

1/31/2014: We discover new drop coordinates from agent code 81320, which we are pointed to by decoding a strange sound on agent code 22.
Quote:
DROP/36.849453/-76.294713/NOTES/SI/NOTES/IMG ON 81320

The coordinates are in a park in Norfolk, VA. We receive an SSTV image of the drop, which shows a plaque.

Later that day, the drop is found taped to the back of the plaque. It is a punchcard.

All agent codes save for a few exceptions continue to play only lists of numbers.

2/7/2014: After a brief outage, the agent system comes back up with a few new messages. 1320 says:
Quote:
Maps target 33334 has been configured on MSP cluster. To view maps, please refer to your instruction manual for reverse license key installation.

22 has changed to strange new music with BPSK31 that decodes to:
Quote:
AI--DID YOU RECEIVE LICENSE KEY? PLEASE INSTALL ON 33334 USING SECURE METHOD SPECIFIED IN MAINT-0002/STANDBY FOR WO 9482.9N IN LSB REDBOOK CARRIER/

Realizing that we need to continue trying things on agent code 33334, we enter the two strings of numbers from the new punchcard XOR'd against each other. This gives us a new message:
Quote:
License key 25225733315 is now installed. Please press reset on controller card. Please press reset on controller card. Please press reset on controller card. Please press reset on controller card. Please press reset on controller card. Please press reset on controller card. Please press reset on controller card. Please press reset on controller card. Error, error, error. Controller card not in reset mode. Error, error, error. Controller card not in reset mode.

12/9/2014: We notice a tumblr/twitter user, ExcitingBooks, posting book covers of some of the known MLPL book titles. Most of the ISBNs match the First Ladies book, just like the "real" books we have received.

2/21/2014: We discover the location of a new drop through ExcitingBooks, who posts this cover. When the barcode is read in code-128 format, it translates to "SLUGUTM". We check an earlier book that they posted, Slug Farms of the Oregon Coast, and the barcode turns out to be UTM coordinates for Lewis and Clark Park in Astoria, Oregon.

The Agent System is still mostly non-functional and reading out lists of numbers on all but a few agent codes.

3/4/2014: We discover that (234) 222-0004, previously a mirror of the Agent System, is accepting input in the form of "QX" voicemails. Through this system, we are able to leave questions for Project MLPL officials. Each question is assigned a chronological QX number, which is used to check back for a response.

In response to our question on how to fix the Agent System, we receive this message:
Quote:
AS36 in safe mode. Winter access problems made difficult for MX crew, new bootloader data override reset key is needed. Shim bootloader possible under current working plan. Basic functional test of wavetable were performed but need more testing. Be available to load functional test into bootloader shortly. If passes, EMTANON will provide finished Shim bootloader by March 30.

In response to our question about the legitimacy of the ExcitingBooks drop:
Quote:
Ai. Please obtain black physical access key. Reference Operation Cargocom in 2014 MLPL document red book audio CD LSB4. 2013 MLPL document red book audio CD LSB4 no longer in effect and will be preceeded by a new document. Black key located under <incomprehensible> wood under slug head. Make haste. J.

3/25/2014: The Agent System begins playing a song with a BPSK31 message in it that decodes to:
Quote:
/REGION/9/DROP/38.3489 -122.7037/LOCATION/1902 SEARS ROEBUCK PAGE 803/LOCATION/0-684-80492-1 PAGE 44/DATE/Z 22235959Z MAR 14/NOTES/FUNCTIONAL TEST/

This appears to be referencing two pages in two books at the Rohnert Park Library in Rohnert Park, CA.

Based on some conversations with the person running the ExcitingBooks account, some of us begin to suspect that he isn't involved in-game at all and that the Astoria "drop" is fake.

4/1/2014: The Astoria drop is visited and a keycard is recovered.

4/5/2014: The Rohnert Park, CA drop is recovered. It consists of two letters referring to a functional test of the Agent System.

4/7/2014: We are able to make progress on fixing the Agent System. We call the (888) number and through the admin menu we switch MXP20 to 256 byte mode. Then, we dial (202) 999-3337 (Controller) and enter the bootloader from the Rohnert Park letter. Upon calling again, we receive the usual Agent System prompt, and we enter Ai's agent number. This prompts a series of tones and messages that correspond perfectly to the checklist from the second Rohnert Park letter. Like the letter suggests, we leave a QX answering the checklist questions.

4/9/2014: Our attempts at fixing the Agent System seem to have failed, and we receive a new QX response:
Quote:
We are waiting on Emtanon to provide new permanent bootloader code to bypass reset button requirement. In meantime, please validate bootloader integrity. Also, if alternate best code is available, please also try alternate best code. It appears the watchdog is working properly so no damage will occur on testing of additional bootloader software. Expect Emtanon to provide new software within the week. Up to 7 days, however, is also possible. Stand by.

4/15/2014: We receive a new BPSK31 message on the Agent System that decodes to:
Quote:
/DROP1/BOOTLOADER FOR AS36/LOC/TBD/NOTES/TBD/
/DROP2/2014 SEASON MISSION OBJECTIVES/LOC/TBD/NOTES/TBD/
/SPECIAL/PLEASE PROGRAM BOOTLOADER TO REACTIVATE AGENT SYSTEM/

ExcitingBooks updates, posting a cover titled "Worm Species of Electoral Area A". The ISBN forms UTM coordinates pointing to the Well Springs Cemetery, an Oregon Trail graveyard, in Hermiston, OR. Shortly after, this image is removed and replaced with the same cover with a different ISBN.

4/17/2014: We receive a series of QX responses to questions that none of us left, giving us the first indication that Robby has somehow reconciled with J:
Quote:
I find that a bit shocking. When will he now return? J.

Quote:
We now need to delay the release. I want to update objectives so this is completely clear to everyone. As far as I am concerned he is completely clear of any fault in this. J.

Quote:
Just have him reach out to Debbie to arrange computer travel authorisation. She has access to that. You should also have this number. It's in the book. J.

4/23/2014: ExcitingBooks uploads and deletes another book cover with the same ISBN coordinates, this time titled "Worm Habitats of the Oregon Trail," perhaps a reference confirming the location of the drop.

5/7/2014: We eavesdrop on a conference call between Robby, who is working for WORM again, Josh from Emtanon, and Nick from sysops. From this call we discover the number for AS27 and begin to get daily updates from it. They discuss the technical difficulties on AS36 and the delay getting it fixed. A summary of the call can be found here.

5/8/2014: We eavesdrop on a second conference between Robby and Nick. Again, they discuss Emtanon's delay getting the bootloader fixed. A summary of this conference can be found here.

5/11/2014: We receive new drop coordinates in a PSK message on AS36:
Quote:
/DROP1/BOOTLOADER FOR AS36/LOC/64.870054 -147.828006/NOTES/TWO PARALLEL LOGS UNDER FURTHEST FROM TRAIL/

The coordinates point to a trail in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Later, the drop is retrieved. It consists of three pieces of paper with new bootloader information.

We convert the hex in the bootloader code to decimal and enter it at the Controller number. In response, we receive a message saying "RESET SUCCESS" with victory tones. After a short time, AS36 finally becomes available as normal again.

5/13/2014: We eavesdrop on a third conference call where Robby, Nick, Josh, and a new Emtanon employee named Davis discuss the bootloader.

Later, we receive multiple new Black OTP messages for the first time since before AS36 went down. J, D, and A all check in and Robby advises them to gradually reintroduce AS36 to avoid further problems.

Robby's voicemail box updates for the first time since he apparently evaded capture with the three flights:
Quote:
Aloha. I need to be more careful in the future, stay tuned. I did take a few things before I left. They are in a safe place and not with me. Aloha.

5/17/2014: Robby leaves a few Black OTP messages doing tech support for J, who cannot figure out how to access his maps.

There is another conference call early in the morning. Robby leaves more messages indicating that he will meet with Emtanon and report to J afterwards.

5/23/2014: A tells J that "we are ready to go". There is a new PSK message on all agent instruction numbers (16041 - 16044) that decodes to:
Quote:
/DROP2/2014 SEASON MISSION OBJECTIVES/LOC/TBD/NOTES/TBD/

5/26/2014: We finally retrieve the drop from the Well Springs Cemetery in Hermiston, OR. It is the blue book, titled "1979 Tide Table for Lake Superior". It is a long book with tables of codes in the form of actual tide tables.

AS27 instructs Agent 2 and Agent 14 to "provide results on Collector 1". Previously, the message had instructed "all agents" to provide results. It seems these two agents are late.

5/27/2014: AS27 now instructs Agent 2 to contact HQ.

5/28/2014: A tells J that she is concerned "they might be on [her] tail", and informs him that she is very close to completing her current mission.

AS27 instructs Agent 2 to "contact HQ ASAP". It seems there may be a problem.

5/29/2014: New Black OTP messages:
Quote:
ANGELA, ANY UPDATES THIS EVENING? -J

Quote:
WE HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
WE HAVE A PAGE 40.
I STILL RECOMMEND WE PROCEED ANYWAY. -A

The AS27 message states:
Quote:
ALL AGENTS, READ PAGE 40, LINES 1, 2, 3, 4, AND 5 RE: AGENT 2.

We have no idea what any of this means. Agent 2 has apparently done something to interfere with A's plans.

5/30/2014: AS27 tells all agents to "proceed with phase 2 with extreme caution".

J leaves a Black OTP message:
Quote:
I HAVE BEEN THINKING A LOT ABOUT OUR PRIOR CONVERSATION.
AGENT 2 AND MELTR3 HAVE A LOT IN COMMON.
I HAVE MIXED THOUGHTS ABOUT THE SOVIETS EVEN MORE SO.
I PURPOSE YOU CONTACT AI, A SURVIVOR, AND ASK HER TO MAKE A STATEMENT RE: AGENT 2. -J

6/6/2014: Following an AS27 message instructing agents to receive a special HF message, we intercept a strange transmission of two voices simultaneously reading numbers. We are unable to decode this.

6/7/2014: J asks A to check her route, saying that they "need position for landing at location for H1 for final retrieval".

6/11/2014: We intercept a second special HF message, this time an SSTV image showing the area surrounding Svalbard Airport.

6/14/2014: J and A discuss their plans for Svalbard in further detail:
Quote:
VERIFIED DOCKING, ROUTING AND LANDING LOCATION.
THIS WILL WORK. WE'D NEED TO BE FAST WITH H1 THOUGH.
IT WILL GET A LOT OF ATTENTION FAST. -A.

Quote:
GOOD MORNING, HOW ACTIVE IS THE SURROUNDING AREA?
H1 IS A DIFFERENT STORY, BUT WILL THE ATV BE UNUSUAL FOR THE AREA?
THE BOAT? -J

Quote:
ITS THE SUMMER.
THE WEATHER IS NICE.
PEOPLE ARE UP ALL HOURS RIDING, SO WOULD NOT BE UNUSUAL FOR LATE NIGHT ATV ACTIVITY. -A

Quote:
PLEASE EXPLAIN THE LOCAL PERCEPTION OF H1 ACTIVITY. -J

Quote:
ITS NOT UNUSUAL.
NEAR AIRPORT.
SAR ACTIVITY IS COMMON.
MILITARY ACTIVITY ALSO COMMON.
IT WOULD TAKE A WHILE BEFORE ANYONE WOULD BE CONCERNED.
INCLUDING NO.
NO AIRSPACE CONCERNS. -A

Additionally, J leaves a message for Ai:
Quote:
WE NEED YOU IN REGION 9.
SPECIFICALLY, LAS VEGAS.
MORE SPECIFICALLY, WE ARE WATCHING YOUR EXPENSE REPORTS.
WHEN WILL YOU BE ABLE TO ARRIVE? RESPOND VIA QX. -J

6/23/2014: We start getting a "low battery" message upon calling AS36, and messages between J and Robby indicate that they're having technical difficulties again.

AS27 messages indicate that there has been a drop recently, and that there is some sort of surveillance in effect, although we have not yet received the specifics.

6/24/2014: Agent code 22, which has been periodically updating to add more to the warning, updates with: "We are watching. Forever Beautiful. Do not cut. Do not cut Forever Beautiful. Squeeze Forever Beautiful. You cut our Forever Beautiful. Do not cut worms." This message refers to the stuffed animal from the Rhode Island drop site that we cut apart, worried there might be something we could miss inside. This has become something the PMs really like making fun of us for, mentioned in multiple messages throughout the game.

6/25/2014: We receive the drop information on Ai's agent code:
Quote:
/DROP3/OTP DROP KEY/LOC/36.058312/-112.127187/NOTES/ROCK/NOTE/PATH/

These coordinates are along the Rim Trail at the Grand Canyon.

6/26/2014: New coordinates have been added to the message on Ai's agent code, making two drops:
Quote:
/DROP4/OTP DROP ENCRYPTED LOCATIONS/LOC/46.989694/-114.662750/NOTES/SIGN/

This one is located at Big Pine Campground in Missoula, MT.

A new AS27 message announces that AS36 repairs will begin shortly.

6/28/2014: We visit the Grand Canyon drop location, but are unable to find anything. While we are having difficulties, 16041 changes to a message stating "69004". When that agent code is called, we receive a series of SSTV images depicting the exact drop location and the surrounding area. However, the drop agent says that they checked that specific location and found nothing. [SSTV: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

6/29/2014: We inform WORM that the Grand Canyon drop may have been "compromised". We receive supposed surveillance imagery of someone at the drop site. We are mildly unsettled by this, but it turns out that the person pictured is NOT the drop agent who visited the location. However, the photo was not taken by any public trail camera that we can find.

Maintenance is having trouble fixing AS36's battery issue, and says that they will need to contact Emtanon.

6/30/2014: The Missoula, MT drop is retrieved. It consists of a ruler stamped with a series of hex digits:
Code:
GROUP 1: 9e 0b A8 6b be 14 d8 95 40 35 17 8a e1 3b 8e 72 40 bf 81

7/1/2014: A caller to the Agent System is randomly redirected to Troy, who is confused as to how we are able to contact him. He tells us that the Message Desk has been discontinued. We continue to redirect to him over the next few weeks and he obliges our random calls, but he maintains that he knows nothing of value about ABISM or WORM.

7/2/2014: Agent code 16041 updates to give us a replacement for the Grand Canyon drop:
Quote:
/DROP5/OTP DROP KEY REPLACEMENT/45.023199/-93.434054/NOTES/SIGN/NOTES/SLEDDING/

These coordinates point to a sledding hill in Cliff E. French Regional Park in Plymouth, Minnesota.

7/4/2014: Another conference call occurs regarding AS36's battery charging issues that are yet to be fixed.

7/5/2014: A has encountered a problem:
Quote:
J, WE HAVE A PROBLEM.
WE HAD A LITTLE ENCOUNTER WITH THE RUSSIAN NAVY.
WE COMPLIED WITH THEIR REQUEST. I WILL CALL YOU ON YOUR SAT PHONE. -A

Meanwhile, the AS27 message changes to "GO."

7/6/2014: The Plymouth, MN drop is recovered. It is an index card with hex digits written on it:
Code:
GROUP 1
AF 3F 83 25 9E  23 E8 A5
73 02 22  AA   D5 02  B7
45 79  88  B5 80 E6

By XORing the digits from this drop and the Big Pine Campground drop, we discover new UTM coordinates, 14/700375/4997974, pointing to a field in Milbank, South Dakota.

7/9/2014: While looking at random agent codes, we discover a message on code 222222:
Quote:
Excerpt from field agent guide. Agent instructions for audio CD decoding. Each compact disk audio track contains important information. This information is stored in the 4 least significant bits of the audio compact disk track. A magic keyword for data is indicated by all 1's binary followed by all 0's and so forth. Next contains a file length indicator. After this, binary data starts. The end of the binary is indicated by the file length. Combine the nybbles from the left and right audio channels to form bytes.

You may also find simple data for decoding on the friendly code audio track before working on more complicated binary operations. The friendly code is used to validate the authenticity of WORM documents, books, and other media. If the authenticity fails the check or does not exist, treat any item with extreme suspicion. This encoding method applies to all CD audio drops, including 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and the 2015 preview MLPL mission documents.Message ends.

We also find a message on code 2222222, seemingly intended for the two agents assigned to take care of us ages ago:
Quote:
If you are listening to this agent code, you have been given very specific instructions. Protect this information. MLPL agents have become aware of a counter-operation. It is also known that the counter-operation is not aware of the MLPL mission. You have been instructed to infiltrate the counter-operation and gain their trust. You are instructed to direct them to a honeypot configured to distract them. Lead them quietly away from the agent systems to the new honeypot. They will soon lose interest in agent systems and reduce burden on MLPL. For further information, access tape retrieval system and enter 22100. Message ends.

We immediately become very paranoid.

7/10/2014: One of our members leaves a QX pretending to be the agent responsible for infiltrating the counter-operation. w responds, letting them know that more instructions are available on the "tape retrieval system".

7/11/2014: The AS27 message updates to:
Quote:
THE MILFORD DE SYSTEM IS EXPERIENCING CONGESTION. PLEASE CONTACT HQ FOR ASSISTANCE WITH TAPE ARCHIVES.

This is the first mention of the Milford, DE system by name.

w leaves a QX response for us, referring to the member who asked the question as "Agent T". Although he never volunteered his name, this is his real initial. We leave an additional QX telling w that the counter-operation has been receiving information from Robby, to which he responds:
Quote:
These are some very serious accusations, Agent T. If you are correct, the counter operation is aware of nearly all our operations. Do you know if they have the MLPL mission documents? I do not want to alarm J if at all possible. Do not mention this situation to him. The tape archive is on the Milford, DE system. It is a 0004 number. You should have this information. -w

7/14/2014: Using the information from agent code 22222 about decoding audio CDs, we are finally able to retrieve a document from the audio files on the El Cerrito CD. It is heavily redacted, but provides a lot of information about the objectives of Project MLPL.

7/16/2014: We notice that the message on 6879 has changed. Previously, it had the drop information for OTP Black 9 on Kauai, but now it has coordinates for an "OTP black 9 replacement" near a trail along the edge of a river in Fairbanks, Alaska. We have someone visit the drop location, but nothing is ever recovered.

w responds to another QX:
Quote:
I wanted to keep you updated on some progress behind the scenes. We have some hardware that is out of production. However, I have personally requested a custom build for a specific device that will be of your interest. Please provide a shipping address for this specialized equipment. Please note that custom hardware will take several weeks to push through the system. I will work my best to expedite this process. Your information is secure, and we will not be notifying J if you are OK with this. It is best he does not know about this very serious situation. He has some anger control issues, as you know. -w

One of our members leaves his address for w in response, although he never receives a package.

7/20/2014: Robby appears to have fixed the AS36 problems all by himself.
Quote:
WORK COMPLETE. TAKING THE HONDA 1000 DOWN WITH ME. -RB

7/23/2014: Maintenance mentions issues with the Milford, DE system, which we still have no access to:
Quote:
ROBERT, NOW THAT YOU ARE BACK IN TOWN, CAN YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THE MILFORD SYSTEM?
USERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS NOT FUNCTIONING. -MX

Robby is not very subtle at prompting us to check his voicemail message:
Quote:
IF I HAD 50565732 DOLLARS EVERY TIME I GOT A TICKET.
JUST KIDDING. I WILL LOOK AT IT IN THE MORNING. -RB

Upon checking his voicemail, we find that the message has changed:
Quote:
Aloha! They were very protective over these images. I have copies, however. This is for a weird drop that isn't even published on the agent system. Aloha!

This message is followed by two SSTV images of the drop.

BPSK31 in the message decodes to:
Quote:
WHATEVER THIS THING IS, BE CAREFUL. THIS IS NOT YOUR RUN OF THE MILL DROP. THERES SOMETHING REALLY WEIRD ABOUT THIS ONE. -ROBBY

Additionally, one of our members tells w about Robby's voicemail box through QX. He does not respond when informed that Robby is the one leaving the messages.

8/7/2014: New Black OTP messages:
Quote:
HAS ANYONE HEARD FROM ROBERT BRAMBLE LATELY? -MX

Quote:
HE IS ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT.
YOU MAY WANT TO REACH OUT TO TIM BLANCHER. -w

This is the first Black OTP message we receive from w.

8/8/2014: J is displeased, as usual:
Quote:
SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT?
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ABOUT?
W, PLEASE CALL ME AT MY DESK. -J

Quote:
CALM DOWN J.
IT IS NOT A BIG DEAL.
I ASKED HIM TO HELP OUT ON THAT SPECIAL PROJECT OF YOURS.
NOTHING TO BE ALARMED ABOUT. -w

Later that day, the Milbank, SD drop is recovered. It is a Forever Beautiful brand stuffed dog, which makes the standard OTP22 "forever beautiful" noises followed by strange tones.

8/9/2014: We cut the Forever Beautiful. Inside it, we find the circuitboard which produced the audio, as well as a wrapper.

8/12/2014: We intercept another special HF message:
Quote:
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE IN RECODING YOUR TRANSMITTER TO WORK WITH THE NEW MAPS. THIS NEW SYSTEM WILL OFFER A MORE INTEGRATED VIEW OF ALL OPERATIONS FOR THIS SEASON. IF YOU DO NOT CURRENTLY POSSESS ACCESS TO A MAPPING VIEWPORT SYSTEM, CONTACT QX1 AND PROVIDE YOUR AGENT NUMBER AND AUTHORISATION CODE 4241. A UNIQUE CODE WILL BE ISSUED. THANK YOU AND HERE'S TO ANOTHER PRODUCTIVE SEASON IN 2014. -MAPOPS

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE WINNER OF THE RECODING CONTEST GOES TO TRANSP1 CREW. THEY BEAT ME OUT BY ONLY A COUPLE MINUTES, SO A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR SUCH A CLOSE FINISH. TRANSP1 WILL BE RECEIVING A GORNO32 GAME PROGRAM SYSTEM, COURTESY OF J. THE GAME SYSTEM DROP HAS BEEN FOUND UNDISTURBED AND WILL BE PROVIDED TO TRANSP1 CREW ON THE NEXT PORT OF CALL. -MAPOPS

8/16/2014: AS27 says:
Quote:
POLAR 4, PREPARE FOR OP LANDCRUISE. POLAR 3, PREPARE FOR OP FLYOVER.

8/20/2014: While dialing random agent codes, we discover a message on code 71000 that gives a "launch code drop location" somewhere in Mongolia.

9/11/2014: New Black OTP messages indicate that Project MLPL is in the middle of transitioning to an alternate system:
Quote:
WE ARE READY FOR THE TRANSITION TO SECONDARY SYSTEM. J, WE WILL BE WAITING FOR YOUR GO AHEAD. -MX

Quote:
JUST DO IT AT MIDNIGHT.
ILL MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT ON AS27. -J

Quote:
DONT SCREW UP MY MAPS THIS TIME. -J

9/12/2014: J is really bad at this.
Quote:
THEY ARENT WORKING.
FIX THEM. -J

Quote:
I AM CONFUSED. STOP WHAT?
WE ARE JUST ON OUR CURRENT COURSE. -D

Quote:
ORDER TO ALL VESSELS: FULL STOP.
ALL VESSELS MUST STOP.
I HAVE NO VISIBILITY. NO MAPS. -J

Quote:
HAVE YOU TRIED VAUGHNSVILLE? -RB

Quote:
I ONLY KNOW 1320.
HOW DO I CHANGE TO VAUGHNSVILLE? I FORGET.
IS THIS THE THING AI USES? -J

Taking the hint from this exchange, we check Vaughnsville and find that ship coordinates have returned.

9/16/2014: A paranormal/conspiracy radio show out of Oregon mentions the Agent System on his show, assuming that it must be some kind of method for government agents to communicate. Some of us attempt to call him to explain that it's a game, but after a bit Troy himself calls in, identifying himself as "Troy from Alaska". He explains a bit about what his job at the Message Desk entailed.

9/19/2014: All ships remain relatively stationary on J's orders, since his maps have not been fixed yet. He sends out a curious series of messages concerning Robby:
Quote:
I AM PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE TRANSFER OF SIGNIFICANT FUNDS INTO OUR ACCOUNT. IN ADDITION TO THE CURRENT SEASON, WE HAVE RECEIVED A COMMISSIONARY. -J [MESSAGE CONTINUES]

Quote:
THE FUNDS WILL SUPPORT THE CREATION OF AN ADDITIONAL, DEDICATED AGENT SYSTEM INSTALLATION. WITH WINTER COMING, THIS WILL BE A DIFFICULT TASK. -J [MESSAGE CONTINUES]

Quote:
ROBERT BRAMBLE WILL BE THE LEAD OF THIS OPERATION. HE WILL ADVISE ON ALL OPERATIONAL DETAILS. PUT YOUR TRUST IN HIM, AS HE HAS PROVED HIMSELF AS A GREAT LEADER. -J [MESSAGES CONTINUES]

w agrees:
Quote:
I WOULD LIKE TO SECOND THE FACT THAT ROBERT BRAMBLE IS THE PERFECT CHOICE FOR THIS MISSION. -w

We are unsure what Robby did to convince w and J to trust him after his escape and subsequent return, let alone trust him enough to lead a special project.

9/29/2014: AS27 indicates that a drop is live, but we never receive any information about it. Perhaps it wasn't meant for us?

10/7/2014: "CABL1" leaves a Black OTP message informing J that they will "head out shortly".

10/8/2014: Someone picks up at the Message Desk number, but he is speaking Dutch and will not answer us. He never returns after this call.

New Black OTP messages show Maintenance asking CABL1 and CABL2 to "press INVERT FMT on [their] transponder". As far as we can tell, this is a method of obscuring the location of ships when coordinates are checked, but we are still unsure how it works.

10/9/2014: Someone on the PETR ship has trouble pressing buttons:
Quote:
MSGID/PETR//
SUBJ/PETR//
/FORMAT/OBJ/00001/ASCII//
/OBJ/00001/
J TOLD ME TO REACH OUT TO YOU
PLEASE FIND THE "INVERT FMT" BUTTON ON YOUR TRANSPONDER AND PRESS IT.
CONFIRM WHEN THIS IS DONE. -MX //

Quote:
CANT FIND IT. -R

10/11/2014: New messages:
Quote:
LOOK AT THE ATTACHED PICTURE. THERE IS NO INVERT FMT. -PETR

An SSTV was attached.

Quote:
WE MODIFIED THE KEYPAD. SEE ATTACHED IMAGE. -MX //

Another SSTV.

Quote:
WHAT KIND OF MODIFICATION IS THAT? THATS A PIECE OF PAPER WITH TAPE ON IT OVER A BUTTON. -PETR

Quote:
FOUND YOUR "MODIFICATION" ON THE FLOOR. -PETR

A final SSTV. Project MLPL is very serious. Not funny.

10/15/2014: New messages elaborate on what the CABL ships are doing:
Quote:
SUBJ/CABL//
/FORMAT/OBJ/00001/ASCII//
/OBJ/00001/
HAD SOME ISSUES WITH BUOY DELIVERY.
ITS NOW IN THE PITCAIRNS OFF DUCIE.
IT IS SUBMERGED.
YOU WILL NEED THE CODE TO UNSUBMERGE.
WHEN YOU RETRIEVE, JUST CUT FROM ITS MOORING. -J

Quote:
THAT SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM.
CABL2 WILL HEAD OUT THAT WAY.
WE HAVE QUITE A BIT OF PREP WORK TO DO ANYWAY FROM CABL1 ONCE WE ARE ON SITE. -CABL1

10/16/2014: New messages indicate that PETR is performing upgrades to Gough Station, likely at Gough Island in the South Atlantic.

10/25/2014: PETR provides update on Gough Station:
Quote:
ARRIVED. ABOUT 2NM OFF THE COAST.
INVESTIGATING APU ISSUE ON Q1.
TRANSPONDER WILL BE TURNED ON
BEFORE FLIGHT. -PETR

w has exciting and incorrect news:
Quote:
THE COUNTER OPERATION HAS
BEEN NEUTRALIZED. -w

This is very strange, since w stopped responding to our QXs after we informed him that Robby was leaking information to the counter-operation. However, he never seemed particularly bothered about Robby's activities or about hiding things from J, so maybe he is intentionally helping us out?

10/27/2014: CABL2 retrieves a submerged buoy using their copy of the blue book, one of the rare instances where in-game characters use books that we actually have access to.

11/1/2014: A new message:
Quote:
WE HAVE THE BUOY. PROCEEDING
TO HISTORICAL EVOLUTION OF
ANEMOGRAPHY TOMORROW.
-CABL2

We are not sure what this means. Another book title, maybe?

11/14/2014: CABL2 reports that "vault construction is complete". J asks CABL1 how much progress they have made, to which they respond "passive tap install will be completed on schedule".

11/18/2014: An AS27 update instructs MAR1, MAR2, and MAR3 to "proceed with phase 4". It seems that we understand very little of what any of these phases are anymore.

11/25/2014: The AS27 update reads:
Quote:
AGENT AI BOURGES MUST BE LOCATED. REPORT ANY INFORMATION TO COLLECTOR 1.

This does not appear to have been prompted by anything, but we are worried we've finally been found out.

11/26/2014: Everything else has been quiet. The AS27 update says:
Quote:
WE HAVE A MISSING AGENT.

11/27/2014: AS27:
Quote:
CODE 0

12/2/2014: In new messages, Robby tells J that "the message is now live", and J reminds everyone that "code 0 is still in effect".

The AS27 message is very unusual.

12/3/2014: J leaves a message:
Quote:
MSGID/ALL//
SUBJ/ALL//
/FORMAT/OBJ/00001/ASCII//
/OBJ/00001/
CODE 0 IS STILL IN EFFECT.
HOWEVER, A LOT OF YOU ARE
AWARE THAT TONORROW IS A
SIGNIFICANT ANNIVERSARY IN
MY FATHER'S TRAGIC DEATH.
TO HONOR HIM, I POSTED A
NEWS CLIP ABOUT HIM ON
AGENT CODE 1. -J

Agent code 1 plays this message:
Quote:
The year was 1969. President Richard M Nixon was sworn into office. The first draft lottery since World War 2 was held. And an ambitious young doctor working for the state department founded a small company as a side project. That was Emtanon, a marriage of skill, luck and financing with brilliant leadership at the helm, and no end in sight. What Emtanon does may not be clear, but one thing certainly is: whether in secret or open, the future of America is in good hands.

12/4/2014: The Agent System gets spam:

J doesn't understand:
Quote:
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?
WHAT IS A VIGARA?
ROBERT?
WE ARE UNDER CODE 0.

-J

12/12/2014: Robby's voicemail message finally updates, although the SSTV images of the Milbank field drop remain at the end.
Quote:
Aloha. It is difficult for me to send messages as of late. I have some downtime on the ship I am on. We are in a quiet period. Something is not right and Ai is not responding. I know you know how to get a hold of her. Please have her contact me. Aloha.

1/10/2015: After a long period of silence, Robby's voicemail updates again:
Quote:
Aloha. Let me give you an update because we are in a silent period. There is a lot of activity in the back channel, and it could be very bad news for all of you. There is serious talk about shutting down the agent system, and implementing a new communication method, since a missing Ai could mean a compromised system. I am trying to deter them. I found something of use and you will know what to do when you see it. Make it happen! Aloha.

1/12/2015: One of our users receives a letter from Robby, transcribed here:
Quote:
J is becoming impatient. They already have an alternate plan for the Svalbard Operation and it does not involve Ai. My concern is that this could lock you out forever if they do proceed with that. My promotion has given me a lot of new access now. I thought I knew a lot, but what I have found is disturbing. It is a lot more than Svalbard (J's pet project).

Agent Code: 16041
One time agent validation code: [censored]
QX1 New Code Request: [censored]

We use the validation codes in the proper place and hope that it is enough to convince J that Ai is no longer "missing".

1/13/2015: We let Robby know that we've used the information that he provided us, and his voicemail message changes:
Quote:
Aloha. This is good to hear. Let's hope we get the all clear soon. Aloha.

Later, J leaves a Black OTP message indicating that they will be exiting code 0. AS27 finally begins to updates as normal.

2/10/2015: After almost a month of vague mission prep updates, AS27 says:
Quote:
PREP OPERATION STRONG ROOM. SEE OLD BLACK BOOK FOR INSTRUCTIONS. DO NOT USE STANDARD BLACK BOOK.

We try every way we know of contacting them directly to tell them we need a copy of the book.

2/13/2015: J leaves a new Black OTP message:
Quote:
STRONG ROOM DOCUMENTS,
"OLD BLACK BOOK", SHOULD
ALREADY BE AVAILABLE TO
EVERYONE. IF THERE IS A PROBLEM,
PLEASE MAKE USE OF QX TO
REQUEST A COPY. RESOURCES
STRETCHED THIN FOR TIMELY
DELIVERY. -J

QX has not worked in ages, so we're unsure if this message is even meant for us.

2/14/2015: A is rude (but to J, so it's alright):
Quote:
WE EXPECT TO BE IN POSITION
BY END OF WEEK. HAPPY
VALENTINES DAY. DO YOU
CELEBRATE VALENTINES DAY
AT ALL? -A

2/16/2015: An AS27 update instructs Drop Agent 23 to "standby for book distribution".

2/19/2015: A is very rude:
Quote:
WE ARE CLOSE TO POSITION.
HOPE YOU HAD A GOOD
VALENTINES DAY, J. I SURE
DID. -A

2/20/2015: We get many new Black OTP messages about our request for documents.
Quote:
SEND THE DROP AGENT BACK,
WE NEED HIM OR HER TO OBTAIN
ADDITIONAL ITEMS. ONE OF
OUR AGENTS IS MISSING
MISSION CRITICAL DOCUMENTS.
IF THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN SOON,
RECOMMEND DELAYING MISSION.
CANCEL AS27 MSG, SEND THIS
INSTEAD.
-w

Quote:
I AM GETTING TIRED OF ALL
OF THESE MISSION DELAYS.
WE HAVE ASSETS CLOSE TO
POSITION AND THIS IS GETTING
VERY EXPENSIVE. MAKE SURE
THE DROP AGENT MOVES ASAP.
WHO IS THE AGENT WHO IS
MISSION DOCUMENTS? -J

w, for whatever reason, dodges the question and refuses to name Ai.

J is upset that he does not have mapping information for the mission assets. A responds:
Quote:
WE ARE OFF THE COAST OF
SVALBARD PER MISSION
DOCUMENTS. AREA IS
RELATIVELY ICE FREE. HE HE.
-A

Quote:
I NEED POSITIONS ACTUAL
POSITIONS IN THE MORNING
SO I CAN USE THE PUSH PINS
ON MY MAP. -J

2/23/2015: J is impatient about the time it's taking to place the drop for us. w explains:
Quote:
OUR AGENT IS ON THE EAST
COAST OF THE UNITED STATES.
THEY ARE EXPERIENCING A
VERY LARGE SNOW STORM.
THIS IS CHALLENGING AND
EXPENSIVE. YOUR PATIENCE
IS REQUESTED.
-w

Quote:
FROM MY PROJECTIONS, THAT
SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN
POSSIBLE. HAVE C TRANSMIT ALL
UP TO DATE CLIMATE DATA. -J

Quote:
I WILL TALK TO C ABOUT SENDING
THIS DATA IN THE MORNING. IT
IS LATE HERE. WE HAVE BEEN
SUCCESSFUL IN LIMITING SNOW
PACK ON THE WEST COAST, IF THAT
IS ANY CONSOLATION. MULTIYEAR
ICE ALL TIME LOW. ARCTIC WARM.
ALL COLD PUSHED SOUTH. -w

Quote:
I MIGHT ALSO ADD THAT WE
CLEARED A LARGE AREA OF
ICE BETWEEN GREENLAND
AND SVALBARD. I AM READING
ARTICLES ABOUT HOW THEY
HAVE NO IDEA HOW THIS
HAPPENED. -w

We receive another message later on:
Quote:
MSGID/PROJECT COW//
SUBJ/PROJECT COW//
/FORMAT/OBJ/00001/ASCII//
/OBJ/00001/
ALL,
OBTAIN DOCUMENTS IN
LONG TERM STORAGE. IN
STORAGE COMPARTMENT L,
"PROJECT COW'. REVIEW.
NOTE METHANE EMISSION…GOALS FROM PERMAFROST
MELT. CONSTRUCTION BY
END OF 2015. ACTIVATION
IN SEASON 2016. -J

It becomes abundantly clear that Project MLPL is trying to accelerate climate change in every possible way, but the benefit to them of destroying the environment remains to be seen. w has some concerns about "Project Cow":
Quote:
WE HAVE OBTAINED THE
DOCUMENTS. THERE ARE
SOME INTERNAL CONCERNS
ON HOW SUCH AN OPERATION
WOULD GO UNNOTICED IN
2015. THERE IS OIL AND GAS
ACTIVITY IN THIS REGION.
CAN WE ARRANGE A MEETING?
-w

Finally, the AS27 update tells Drop Agent 23 to report in when they reach the drop site, but it is followed by some strange music and a stranger message.

2/25/2015: AS27 updates to inform Drop Agent 23 that their request for an "alternate drop site" has been approved.

3/9/2015: After a worrying amount of arguing between w and J about the delay, we finally receive the information for the book drop:
Quote:

This is in the Blue Hill, Maine library, across the street from the phone booth where the first Blue Hill drop was located. We contact a librarian, who recovers the book and agrees to mail it to us.

3/10/2015: A new Black OTP message appears to reference a tree seed delivery at the real-life Svalbard vault:
Quote:
J, DO YOU WANT TO WAIT OR GO
BACK FOR THE TREE DELIVERY?
-A

J responds:
Quote:
I DO NOT CARE ABOUT THAT
DELIVERY, UNLESS IT CONFLICTS
WITH THE TIME WE PERFORM THE
OPERATION. LET THEM HAVE
THEIR TREE SEEDS. -J

Quote:
THAT IS THE PROBLEM, J.
THERE IS ACTIVITY AT THE
SITE. THIS IS ONE OF SEVERAL
DELIVERIES EXPECTED.
-A

In another message, w asks Robby to contact him, since he needs to talk to him about something.

3/13/2015: We receive an enormous number of new messages. First, A responds to J about the tree seed delivery.
Quote:
SUBJ/TREES//
/FORMAT/OBJ/00001/ASCII//
/OBJ/00001/
IT IS EXPECTED THAT AFTER
THE LAST OF DELIVERY, THE
SITE WILL BECOME QUIET
AGAIN. THEY OFFER THE
ILLUSION OF SECURITY FOR
PR AND PRESS PURPOSES
ONLY. -A

J asks A when the last day is, to which she responds:
Quote:
WE HAVE BEEN USING SCRAPR
TO DETERMINE THIS DATE.
CRACKING ENCRYPTION. WAITING
FOR RESULTS.
-A

An Agent M asks J:
Quote:
SUBJ/MELTR FLEET//
/FORMAT/OBJ/00001/ASCII//
/OBJ/00001/
I NORMALLY WOULD NOT BE
BOTHERING YOU ABOUT LOGISTICS,
BUT THERE ARE SEVERAL MELTR
SHIPS IN AN UNEXPECTED LOCATION.
SHOULD I ARRANGE FLUID
DELIVERIES TO THESE LOCATIONS?
WILL THEY BE BACK IN POSITION
LATER? -M

J responds:
Quote:
THEY ARE ON LOCATION FOR
A SPECIAL PROJECT OF MINE.
PLEASE ARRANGE DELIVERIES
IF SUPPLIES, FUEL, OR FLUID
LEVELS ARE LOW.
-J

Other messages indicate that PETR is getting into position to receive a ZEUS transmission.

3/18/2015: A tells PETR to press INVERT FMT, which they do successfully.

3/19/2015: New Black OTP messages explain that the location of a new drop was transmitted to Drop Agent 29.

3/20/2015: Many new messages inform us that "Operation N" is about to begin: PETR is picking up an agent from Bear Island (Bjørnøya, the southernmost island in the Svalbard archipelago), after which they will proceed to their destination. A doesn't want any map data to be transmitted, since the operation is sensitive, but J is very insistent that he be able to track the location of the ships.

3/21/2015: We receive the old black book, titled "Where the Black Fern Grows", in the mail. It consists of a short story, some technical information, and a long section of hex.

THE DROPS:

Retrieving drops is a major aspect of the game, even if it sometimes seems like we go long periods without anything to find at all. The items we find at drop sites range from CDs, books, small metal components, weird black boxes, creepy stuffed animals, to laminated index cards. Most drops, when recovered, give us clues on how to proceed in the game, but there are some whose purpose we still haven't determined. This is a list (with in-depth descriptions) of all the drops we have retrieved. Drop sites that were visited but found empty, such as the Grand Canyon or Fort Lauderdale Airport sites, are NOT included here, but they are included in the timeline when appropriate.

[drop item inventory]

Lake Oswego, OR (Lake Oswego Public Library): The very first drop we received, alluded to in the first message quoted above.
Quote:
DROP/45.4240/-122.6675/0-8160-4195-4/PG272/

The drop was found at the library the coordinates point to, on page 272 of the book matching the ISBN listed: First Ladies: A Biographical Dictionary. It was a CD-R containing files named p1.txt, p2.txt, p3.txt, p4.txt, and otp.txt. We have used these files to help us decode NATO messages and order things from the message desk.

Blue Hill, ME: This drop was retrieved only days after the first, in a payphone booth near Bangor, Maine. It was another CD, containing genuine copies of TrueCrypt, BCWipe, and a file named data.bin, which we used to decrypt the component drop messages on (709) 700-0122.

Black Oak Lake Cemetery, Montevideo, MN: We discovered this drop on agent code 3233 by XORing it with data.bin. The drop itself was found slightly outside of the cemetery, and it consisted only of a clear-taped index card with the phone number (709) 700-0122 on it.

Component Drops: The location of these drops were decoded on (709) 700-0122. Each drop contained small metal components. The components are meant to form something, since the coordinate message states "PROCEED TO SVALBARD VAULT FOR FINAL ASSEMBLY". However, we've not been able to make much sense of them, possibly because of the pieces that we're missing.
Retrieved Components: Tapiola, Finland; Santa Cruz, CA

"Retrieved" Components: Swan Point Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI. The components were found, but one was dropped and lost.

Forever Beautiful: Before the components at the Rhode Island drop site were recovered, we found a stuffed animal elephant, which we destroyed in case anything was inside. The PMs like to make fun of us for doing this. While describing the stuffed animal to us, the person at the location said it was holding a heart that said "I love you", then corrected themselves to "We love you", and then mentioned that the tag said "Forever Beautiful". Ever since, this has been a recurring phrase in the game. An early message has a distorted baby voice repeating the phrase at the end. The plushie destruction is mentioned at length on agent code 22. We received a drop of another Forever Beautiful stuffed animal much later in the game, in the summer of 2014.

Missing Components: Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan; Bellwood, IL; Manoa Chinese Cemetery, Honolulu, HI

    - The decoded message indicated that there was another component drop in Hong Kong, but that it had already been collected.

Bursage Loop Trail, Henderson, NV: The location of this drop was decoded from agent code 16001. It was found on an X on the Bursage Loop bike trail. The drop consisted of a mysterious black box and a SIM card. When the box is connected to a computer, we are able to input DTMF (0123456789ABCD*). When a successful code is input, it will return one of fifteen different outputs. According to later Agent System messages, there should have been a green paper with instructions on how to activate the SIM card at the drop, but this was never recovered.

El Paso, TX: This drop was again decoded from agent code 16001. The clue for the drop was "HOLE", and the first two visitors to the location were unsuccessful in finding it. While our third group of visitors was at the site, we received an SSTV message that pictured the exact location of the drop, underneath a truck. The CD contained an Ubuntu distro with a 100 MB deviation referred to by MLPL as a "standard 100 MB hole". This is the OTP Black 1 CD, which we have used to decode hundreds of messages between agents on codes 18000 and above.

Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Rainier, OR: This drop site was visited two times, once to deposit a fake "damaged" book, and the second time to retrieve the "replacement" copy of the book. During our first visit, the visitor placed a plastic bag of ashes as our "damaged book", and found a DRAM card with a dollar bill taped to the receptacle. Neither have been used for anything, and it was indicated later that we were not supposed to remove the DRAM card. On the second visit, we recovered a book cover for "Molds and Lichens of Nova Scotia", published by the Atlantic Mycological Union. On the opposite side, written in pen, are a code and phone number. The code is the serial number of the dollar from the first drop, and the phone number is the same number from the Black Oak Lake Cemetery drop.

Blyind Package: Shortly after the damaged book was dropped, one of our members received a package in the mail containing more metal components. This person had never given his name or address to the Message Desk, so we're still unsure how the PMs got his information.

North Dakota/Montana Border: According to the notes on the Agent System, this drop was intended for Agent 16042. It is a CD identical to the one found at the El Paso site, and is labeled OTP Black 2.

Nadando Package: This was another drop mailed to one of our members, but this was significantly less weird. Nadando left his information with the Message Desk during a keepalive session in hopes of getting a copy of the "pink book" being discussed, and this is what he was sent. The pink book is "Global Response Codes". There was a code hidden behind the stamps on the package

Bangkok, Thailand: This drop was discovered through a series of Black OTP 1 messages and a Message Desk call. It was located in a phone booth in Bangkok, and it contained a DVD in a case titled "Collecting Vintage Capacitors, Diodes, and Thyristors" by the "Vintage Semiconductor Society". The DVD itself is a 12 minute video consisting of the narration from a real-life work safety presentation over several different videos from dashcams and surveillance footage. At certain points in the video, numbers flash on screen corresponding to new agent codes.
[pictures] [video]

Secret Beach, Kauai: This drop was discovered through an agent system message prompting us to pick up the "green book" at a remote beach on Kauai. It took us a full month to find someone to visit the site, where the book was finally recovered under a tree with the word "Dorvin" carved into it.

Kauai Black OTP Drops: These three drops for additional Black OTP CDs were located on Kauai and their locations were found on the Agent System shortly after the first drop.
OTP Black 7: A good hike into a nature preserve, this CD was found at a rock ledge near the path.
OTP Black 8: This CD was discovered underneath a rock near a cave. It had been damaged from being left out, but it seems repairable if necessary.
OTP Black 9: The final Black OTP CD on Kauai, this one was found by a coconut near a bush at the specified coordinates. It appears as though a "replacement" for this CD was dropped much later in the game in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Wallace, ID: We discovered the coordinates for this drop on an agent code found in the first green book. It was found under a bridge after a significant amount of time misunderstanding the robot voice's hint as "under branch". It is a replacement green book, identical in every way except for the handwritten field notes.

Newport Beach, CA: The location of this drop was mentioned on 16041 shortly after we gave an excuse as to Ai's absence from mainland training. It was found near a powerbox marked 3601.5. It is a CD identical to all other black OTP CDs we have recovered.

Malaysia rest stop: This drop was discovered through a series of Black OTP messages and a call to the Message Desk in February of 2013. A full month later, we finally found someone to visit the site, a rest stop along a highway. Taped to the bottom of a firehose box we found a plastic bag with components in it, seemingly a "replacement" package for the components that we had lost or dropped in late 2012.

Braco's Letter: One of our members requested a document during a keepalive session at the Message Desk, and left his name and address for it to be delivered. Some time after, he received a letter in the mail. Almost all of the text is redacted.

Smugs Package: After signalling that he had the ability to forward packages to Ai, one of our members received a package in the mail. Inside was a 5.25" floppy, inside of which was a CD. The CD contained two txt files and a file called data.bin, out of which we received the ZEUS instructional video.

Santa Clara, CA: We found the location of this drop, intended for agent 16043, from a Black OTP message on the Agent System. It was found in a nature park near a sign, and it consisted of an 88 MB SyQuest cartridge. Nothing ever came of the data contained on it, but later we discovered that we had missed a microSD card inside the cartridge. It contained 470 MB worth of names and social security numbers (which do not correspond to actual people's information). When the Grover Cleveland March was playing on the Agent System, we noticed that two members of the band responsible for the recording were listed in this file. However, considering the amount of names in the file, this may have been coincidence. We have not used this data for anything concrete as of yet.

Central Park, NY #1: The first Central Park drop, intended for agent 16043, was found on a Black OTP 1 message. It was found under a bush a little ways north of the 79th St. Transverse. It was a CD containing three files: iffound.txt, very similar to the file of the same name from Smugs' package; order.txt, which contained account and job codes which we used with the Material Order Desk; and file.txt, which contained only the (303) number.

Central Park, NY #2: The second Central Park drop, intended for agent 16043 after we stole the first one, was also found on a Black OTP 1 message. It was located in a small tunnel underneath the 72nd St. Transverse. It consisted of a microSD card with data.bin and p1.txt files, and 5 Australian dollars.

Carlisle, PA: This drop was discovered on the Agent System from a Black OTP 1 message intended for Ai. We found it inside a tree trunk at the drop coordinates, and it consisted of another CD.This one contained multiple files, including copies of p1.txt and p2.txt, another iteration of iffound.txt, and a few files authored by Robby containing new information:

El Cerrito, CA: An SSTV image and the number of an agent code containing coordinates appeared on agent code 16042, which had been previously unused despite belonging to one of the agents assigned to assess the counter-operation. It was found on a bike trail underneath BART tracks, and it consisted of two CDs. One was another Black OTP CD, and the other contained two audio files. The first was a strange warning for us, indicating that WORM foresaw us interfering with the drop. The second contained some numbers interspersed with music.

Much later in the game, after being prompted by instructions on agent code 222222 about decoding audio CDs, we discovered MLPL-0000000, the MLPL mission objectives document, from these files.

L0j1k's Letter: One of our users who had been in contact with Robby often via the Material Order Desk received a letter from him in the mail. The text of the letter made no sense:
Quote:

But using p1.txt from the Pennsylvania drop, the capital letters were decoded to:
Quote:
IN TROUBLE WENT INTO HIDING I KNOW TOO MUCH NOW WILL BE IN CONTACT SOON ROBERT

Smugs Package #2: The user who previously received the ZEUS instructional video for Ai in the mail received a second drop containing a Cleveland Direct calling card. We used this card to dial into multiple Class Six numbers to access new messages, most importantly a new system used to track the coordinates of ships. When the layers of the card were peeled back, a message was revealed:

Quote:

VIOLET/RAW UMBER
WHITE/RED QVBRC
--
GREEN/RAINBOW
SOLID YELLOW RAW UMBER/RAINBOW

GENUINE

This message is still unsolved, but all 5grams and colors correspond to the worm colors table from the green book.

Dimitrovgrad, Bulgaria: This drop was placed for Ai in response to questions we left at the Message Desk regarding the status of Operation Irislatch, ABISM Maps, and Vaughnsville. It was a CD found on a power box inside a train station. The CD contained three files. IFFOUND.txt had the same text as usual, with a warning added at the end:
Quote:
ROBERT: YOU CANNOT HIDE
FROM WORMS. WILL WE FIND
YOU.

SHOPPING.TXT:

The final file was data.bin, which when XOR'd with Black OTP 9 produced a video explaining the nature of the calling card and Class Six numbers.

Sofia, Bulgaria: We learned of this drop through a series of messages on the Agent System in which an agent called B01 requested the location of a "material return" to dispose of a book. It is Robby's copy of the green book, containing many new agent codes and solutions to a lot of the puzzles we missed.

Sebastopol, CA: We discovered the location for this drop on agent code 16041, after some Black OTP messages indicating that J was sending out extra calling cards for agents whose balances were low. We had run out of balance on our first card and were unable to call any of the Class Six numbers. The drop was retrieved near a bench at the start of a trail. It consisted of a calling card identical to the first one except for the message in between the card's layers. This card's message read "AUTHENTIC NIGHTLIGHT FOR FUTURE USE".

Norfolk, VA: We found the location of this drop in a BPSK31 message on agent code 1320, which we found by decoding a new, strange sound on agent code 22. It consisted of a punchcard taped to the back of a plaque inside a park. We received a "license key" for the reverse agent code by XORing the two sets of highlighted numbers.

Astoria, OR: The location of this drop was discovered after ExcitingBooks posted a book cover with a barcode that, when read in code-128 format, translated to "SLUGUTM". We looked at the barcode of another book the account had recently posted, "Slug Farms of the Oregon Coast", and found that it translated to UTM coordinates. The coordinates pointed to Lewis and Clark Park in Astoria, Oregon.

It took quite a while for someone to visit the park, since we were unsure if the ExcitingBooks account was actually tied to anything in-game. When the location was finally visited, a keycard was recovered from underneath a wooden slug. We have not yet found a use for the keycard.

Rohnert Park, CA: This drop was discovered in a BPSK31 message on the Agent System:
Quote:
/REGION/9/DROP/38.3489 -122.7037/LOCATION/1902 SEARS ROEBUCK PAGE 803/LOCATION/0-684-80492-1 PAGE 44/DATE/Z 22235959Z MAR 14/NOTES/FUNCTIONAL TEST/

The drop consisted of two letters found on the specified pages of two books, page 803 in the 1902 edition of the Sears Roebuck Catalogue, and page 44 in the Scribner Encyclopedia of American lives. The two letters referenced a functional test for AS36. They helped us come closer to fixing the Agent System, which had been essentially nonfunctional for months.

Fairbanks, Alaska: The coordinates for this drop were found in a PSK message on AS36:
Quote:
/DROP1/BOOTLOADER FOR AS36/LOC/64.870054 -147.828006/NOTES/TWO PARALLEL LOGS UNDER FURTHEST FROM TRAIL/

The drop was found, predictably, in between two logs by the trail. It consisted of three pieces of paper with new bootloader information, which we used to finally fix the Agent System.

Hermiston, OR (Well Springs Cemetery): The location of this drop was discovered when ExcitingBooks posted a cover for a book titled "Worm Species of Electoral Area A" with an ISBN containing UTM coordinates. Shortly afterward, the cover was deleted and replaced with a copy identical in every way except for the ISBN. Some time passed without any visitors to the site, when ExcitingBooks uploaded a cover titled "Worm Habitats of the Oregon Trail", with the same ISBN, and shortly after deleted it.

After a while, we were able to recruit a reporter to visit the site for us. He retrieved the drop, which consisted of the blue book, titled "1979 Tide Tables of Lake Superior". He also picked up a Korean cookie wrapper, unsure if it was related.

Missoula, MT (Big Pine Campground): This drop was discovered on agent code 16041 shortly after the failed Grand Canyon drop was discovered. It was found near a sign at the specified coordinates, and it consisted of a meterstick stamped with a series of hex digits:
Code:
GROUP 1: 9E 0B A8 6B BE 14 D8 95 40 35 17 8A E1 3B 8E 72 40 BF 81

When combined with the next drop, this formed a message pointing to the location of a third drop.

Plymouth, MN (French Regional Park): This drop location was found on 16041 as a "replacement drop key" after we failed to recover the Grand Canyon drop. The drop was an index card found on a sledding hill. It had hex digits written on it just like the Big Pine Campground's ruler:
Code:
GROUP 1
AF 3F 83 25 9E  23 E8 A5
73 02 22  AA   D5 02  B7
45 79  88  B5 80 E6

When combined with the previous drop, this formed the coordinates for the Milbank, SD drop.

Milbank, SD: As mentioned above, the coordinates for this drop were first received by combining the hex digits from the Missoula, MT and Plymouth, MN drops. Shortly thereafter, Robby's voicemail updated to inform us:
Quote:
Aloha! They were very protective over these images. I have copies, however. This is for a weird drop that isn't even published on the agent system. Aloha!

This message was accompanied by two SSTV images showing the drop site. A BPSK31 message warned us:
Quote:
WHATEVER THIS THING IS, BE CAREFUL. THIS IS NOT YOUR RUN OF THE MILL DROP. THERES SOMETHING REALLY WEIRD ABOUT THIS ONE. -ROBBY

We had trouble finding the exact drop location even with the SSTV assistance, but after a few visits it was finally recovered. The drop consisted of a Forever Beautiful brand stuffed dog with an intact tag. However, it had been modified to play the "baby voice" forever beautiful sound file, followed by some strange tones. When cut apart, we discovered the circuitboard/noisemaker used to modify it, as well as the wrapper of a granola bar.

The tones in the circuit board's audio were decoded to be "56001," an agent code that appears to serve as an "activation status" update. 83970, a part of the stuffed animal's barcode, gave us an ABISM message that decoded to "I LOVE YOU. WE LOVE YOU. FOREVER BEAUTIFUL." The full barcode gave us another ABISM message that provided us with a password, but we are still unsure what the password is meant to be used for.

Blue Hill, ME #2: This drop was placed for Ai to provide her with critical mission documents. After a lengthy delay, we discovered the location was at the Blue Hill Public Library, the same place we called for assistance with the Blue Hill phone booth drop in 2012. We contacted a librarian, who after some convincing recovered the book for us. It has just arrived in our possession, and it consists of a book titled "Where the Black Fern Grows". The majority of the book is a long block of hex digits.

THE BOOKS

Molds and Lichens of Nova Scotia, published by the Atlantic Mycological Union: The first "book" we received, which isn't technically a book. Only the cover of the book was found, with some codes written on the back. This was found at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery drop.

Global Response Codes, by Dr. J. Marvin Blackweather (Pink Book): The second book we received, and the first to actually be a book! One of our members received this book in the mail after leaving his information with the Message Desk for a copy of the "pink book". The book consists of three sections: A list of special inquiry codes to be used with the Message Desk, a list of codes labeled "Group", "MLPL", and "C", and an appendix listing location codes for a huge amount of cities around the world. The barcode of the book is the ISBN for the First Ladies book again. We have used the location codes to contact specific "stations" through the message desk, and have used some of the special inquiry codes in specific situations.
[transcript] (missing location codes) [images]

Designing Compelling Worm Sanctuaries, published by the North American Helminthological Society (Green Book): We have received three copies of this book. The first was recovered from Secret Beach on Kauai, placed there on J's orders for it to be out of reach of the counter-operation. The second, found from an agent code in the first copy, was picked up under a bridge in Idaho. The third we found much later on a bookshelf in Sofia, Bulgaria. All copies are identical save for the handwritten field notes in each. This book contains a ton of new codes, phone numbers, and mysteries. Unlike the previous book, this one has quite a bit of content beyond just the numbers. Much of it remains unsolved to this day, but here is a short list of important information from the green book:

Publishing Info/Dedication:
- The phone numbers listed under "PTO Publishing" are all Agent System mirrors.
- The dedication to "SF" is likely a reference to the woman who crashed into the Blue Hill phone booth shortly after the drop was retrieved, as those are her initials.
- The ISBN is, again, for the First Ladies book.

Reviews:
- The code on the left page, when entered into the Agent System, gives a "friendly code".
- One of the reviews is written by J (Marvin Blackweather). Another is by a man named Nibelung, likely a reference to the mythological family that settled Worms, Germany. The reviews also make little sense considering the text of the actual book, but that goes without saying.

Prelude [1, 2]:
- This history of worms is entirely made up even when it isn't concealing a secret code. It implies that St. John's University is in St. Johns, Newfoundland, even though this is false. Who knows?
- The numbers referring to worm species on the first page form the (709) phone number.
- The numbers referencing the growth of wormeries on the second page, when combined and entered into the agent system, give a message with coordinates for additional green book drops.
- The last two paragraphs where the text devolves spell out a message in the capital letters: AI BOUERGES BE CAREFUL.

Chapter 1:
- This list of "worm ordering codes" was referenced later in the game in both of the calling card drops. The worm colors may have something to do with other books, as we've had references to "slate" and "clear" books before. We were instructed to use "chartreuse" at the message desk at one point, although it didn't seem to work with either the color or the number associated with it.

Chapter 2:
- The QR code decodes to a series of 5grams corresponding to particular letters or numbers.

Chapters 3 & 4: These chapters give a lot of technical information about the systems WORM is using, provide some new phone numbers, and explain the system status check on agent code 33330. ZEUS is also explained in a bit more detail here. At the end of the chapter, the text of Global Response Codes appears, without the location codes at the end. The second to last page of the book is a message about worms, solved for us in the third copy, followed by a page that has been "unintentionally left blank".

Field Notes (Kauai Book): These field notes appear to correspond to Message Desk inquiries. Giving the Message Desk any of those 3xx numbers will give us coordinates around the corresponding location in response. Some refer to drop locations (El Paso, Oswego), while others have yet to be used in the game. Handwritten on the very last page of the book is a series of letters that we have not yet found a purpose for.

Field Notes (Idaho Book) 1, 2, 3: The field notes from the second copy of the book are slightly more cryptic. They consist of what appears to be ABISM login information, an agent code that leads to a voicemail box prompting you to report temperature or rainfall anomalies, and some acronyms. Cochliobolus heterostrophus is a fungus that causes Southern Corn Leaf Blight. Paired with the mention of a disbursement vector, it seems likely that Project MLPL has plans to spread blight.

Field Notes and other Handwritten Notes (Sofia Book): These notes provide solutions to a lot of the puzzles that we never solved with the first two books. One page seems to spell out the solution to the message on the inside of the calling card, while the field notes explain the process of accessing maps and give us a few new agent codes.

1979 Tide Tables of Lake Superior (Blue Book): We found this book at the Well Springs Cemetery in Hermiston, OR after discovering its location from the ISBN of an ExcitingBooks cover. It consists of a long series of codes organized into "tide tables" containing tide information for many different locations.

Publishing Info: Geoebic Publishing is obviously not real, and Geoebic isn't a real word or location. There are a few hits referencing what appears to be Gogebic, MI (which would fit the Lake Superior theme), but they may just be typos. Annelida is not a real town - it refers to the phylum for segmented worms.

Dedication: The name "Maj. DS Wagner" was mentioned before in response to an unknown QX on (234) 222-0004, but we don't know anything more about it. The dedication underneath is from the Hávamál, an Old Norse poem, which translates to:
Quote:
Wise he is deemed who can question well,
and also answer back:
the sons of men can no secret make
of the tidings told in their midst.

Recommendations: Again, none of these recommendations really make sense, but unlike the green book none of them are written by a major character. Instead, the names of the publications responsible for the reviews spell out "WORM". The only publication that might actually make use of tide tables is "Regatta Daily", and coincidentally the oldest annual sporting event in North America is the Royal St. John's Regatta, which takes place in St. John's, Newfoundland (the "forefront of worm studies" according to the green book). Like many things, this may well be a coincidence.

The section that follows includes tide tables for multiple real locations around Lake Superior, providing tide information for every day of the year. The table labeled in the table of contents as "Outer Island", a real location, is actually titled Worm Island for some reason.

Measurements: The final page lists some of the agent system mirrors as "weather stations" for obtaining local tide tables.

[pdf copy]

Where the Black Fern Grows, by Dr. J. Marvin Blackweather (Old Black Book): This book provided instructions for Operation Strong Room. We retrieved this book at the Blue Hill library after w learned that Ai did not have a copy. We have only just recently received it in the mail, so this section will be updated once we know more. It is ~150 pages, most of it consisting of "encrypted mission data" in the form of blocks of hex in small font.

[pdf copy] [album]

Legacy of the Postal Reorganization Act (Red Book): We have tried and failed a few times to order this book.

Asparagus Fern Root Maintenance: Mentioned in an HF message, this book was apparently used to help TRANSP receive their new orders.

Slate Book: Mentioned multiple times. Possibly the same as the book titled "Slate Deposits in the Intermountain West".

Clear Book: A book used by agents in the field. Most messages mentioning this book require agents to provide responses to questions on certain pages to Collector 1.

Standard Black Book: We know nothing about this book. It was only mentioned in a message stating that instructions for Operation Strong Room were in the "old black book" and not the "standard black book".

Old Blue Book: Another unknown book, messages indicate that agents stationed in the North Atlantic use this book for some purpose.

Many other book titles have been discovered from the Message Desk. Check pages 17 and up on the index to see them all.

No, I wrote and compiled this myself to start the new thread. We have a previous thread here, but it's very old and we get a lot of people confused by the misleading title/lack of info in the OP. Our wiki is pretty outdated and I didn't think it was really the place to put this.

I have a link in the very first post to skip the wall of text and start from the first "update" post. If you'd prefer we move the information someplace else, that's fine! Sorry for any inconvenience, I know it's a crazy amount of information. It's just that all of this info was disorganized before, and it was very difficult to find any specific thing.

No no, it's fine. I wasn't posting as a mod I was posting as a user. However I shoudk probably lock the other thread then and post a link to this one on it.

Thank you. We can finally link potential players to this excellent summary instead of saying "go read 75 pages of UF forum posts". Thanks, Adah. Awesome.

We have looked into the new book, but haven't been able to figure out much about it. The hex is much, much too long to transcribe manually and doesn't seem to use any of our previous decoding methods. The pdf can be found here.

So here's a little update about the black book. In #ARG on Freenode, counterops agent Meki has been hammering away at training Tesseract OCR against the pictures of the black book. It was slow going at first, and personally I've had a lot of experience using OCR (or trying to) and had very little faith that it was going to work. It seems 10 years is an eternity in OCR software development. Meki has achieved OCR scans with about 0.5% error rate, and perhaps 90-95% of the errors in OCR are transcription errors with the letter "B" and the number "8". This is profoundly good in terms of OCR, and Meki deserves a lot of praise for his hard work and dedication. I had been shopping around for outsource transcription services (like India or the Philippines where this kind of labor is relatively cheap), but using this method, we could do this ourselves, since the task has now become proofreading instead of transcribing. I have no estimates for this workload, but I think the future of this encrypted text has just gotten a lot brighter. Thanks, Meki!

It looks like we might be preparing for a new drop! Region 7 includes Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. Region 10 is Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Also, after a long time without updates, we finally have a new message on Robby's voicemail:

I will be making some changes to this system. You will be able to tell if it is me, I promise.
