moon puzzle justification

the pm's realized that the moon puzzle was too hard and so added an easier block letter puzzle which pointed at the same answer and then came out with a post that said you can have multiple puzzles arrive at the same answer. if my answer was wrong they would have taken it down within 24hr, but that has not happened.

for those of us staying away from Yahoo! as much as possible, here is his post:

Quote:
For those having a hard time solving the moon puzzle, try breaking
the journal entry into sentences and numbering those sentences.
By "switch"ing around the numbers you will find that one number will
not be used (forget the loss), and one will be the sentence
number "down" and one will be the number of letters "across" or into
the sentence

Do all the letters and then rearrange the letters, or
else "switch"/rearrange the numbers first and then the letters will
come out as I said before.

have fun. -rex

Thank you, this is at least a start. As soon as I figure out which sentence to delete and which new order to put them in, i will be happy to spoil it for the rest of the audience here so we can all move on.

So far, some of us already tried moving the sentences of the journal entry to new lines -- i found 36 sentences in all. Now it seems there is a way to take the moon number triplets and remove one from each set.

Code:
...
33- noah boddy knows.
34- the trouble i have seen.
35- please look closely.
36- i need someone to check for me.

I actually got 36 sentences FWIW...I'm still not sure if the solution is solid, I can't seem to make it work.

EXAMPLE: The number set 5/7/7

FIRST 7 Sentences:

1)had a memory last night surface in the midst of an attempt to
dream.

2)i say attempt because such a thing as sleeping appears to be going
the way of the dodo and there aint nothing i can do about it except
watch the lambs leap over me and laugh at the absurdity of such
things.

3)counted sheep my entire life and look where it got me.

4)the memory was of rachel.

5)soft skin, hair red as the warmest fire even when she was very
young.

6)she wasnt sleeping either that night and it was as though there
were something looking at her whil e i tried to put her to sleep.

7)she kept looking over my shoulder--not unfocused or sleepy but
actually looking at it and when i asked her what she was looking at,
she smiled wide and said 'the man' and i turned around-believing for
a moment there would actually be someone there (after all, i could
remember the past then although now i dont know why i was sure
someone would be there) but of course the room was empty.

Possibilities:

1)5th sentence/ 7th letter/ Discard other #7 = I
2)7th sentence/5th letter/ Discard other #7 = E
3)7th sentence/ 7th letter/ Discard #5 = T

There is no I, E, or T in "Lullaby of Broadway".

oh sorry, i was editing as another was posting. Yep, i've found 36 sentences, beginning where you did and ending where I've added to my post above. There was a hint about "finding a new place to start," so that appears to be where we have gone astray in our numberings. (more work ahead)

Thoughts anyone?

If you were actually able to throw out a number, it makes no sense to me why they would have included it in the first place. Esp. before they separated the numbers for us...the puzzle would be almost impossible to solve. "Let's include extra numbers, confuse them for awhile, and then give them a really obscure hint telling them that they don't need all the numbers we gave them in the first place". Smells funny to me.

No disrespect to Rex, and I am by no means saying that his solution is wrong. I just still don't see how he got there, or why TNB would design a puzzle in that manner....but then again, I'm new to this and if that's the way it's done who am I to argue? But if that is the way they designed this puzzle, I for one, think it's not a great puzzle. It's so bloody hard to figure out what direction you need to take that we have to be led by the nose step, by awful numbered step.

Sorry for the rant, Frustration rearing its ugly head...lol.

update on my proof

I posted this at yahoo and am reposting here so ya all dont have to look at those stupid ads.

from yahoo post:

I am working on the proof, I originally did it with scraps of paper
and using my finger to count letters on the screen. I would love to
have used excell and just posted a spreadsheet, but I dont know
excell that well, so if anyone has any excell tips, email me.
thanks -rex

also does anyone have that ARGN thing at the top of their screen, i thought argn was closed, whats up with that? has unfiction been taken over by argn, i thought collective detective took over argn.

hi Rex. Don't worry about making a pretty display. If you could just say where we should start numbering our sentences, I'll do the spreadsheet for you. We're not asking for a formal proof, just some indiciation as to why our methods so far have not been able to duplicate your results. If you can see where we are stuck, please point it out. If you remember which word has the first "L" or "B", that's all you'll have to say, and we can probably reverse-engineer the rest. As you can see, we're all hard workers here, and plenty of people will step up to create a way to display the results. Thanks again for joining us here.

moon puzzle solve?

First of three #s = # of lines down the journal entry(not counting spaces), second and third #s are the letters.
Using set on left side of the screen, count letters (not counting spaces or punc.) from right to left on that line.
Example:
line 39/ 13th letter is E / fifth letter is L. That is starting from the s in "is" and counting right to left.

would make her okay and stop and everythings fine, dear, it really is,

continue in that pattern:
line 51 right>left 20th letter is U, 19th letter is T
etc.etc.
We get
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
E L U T D W D D O R I Y S H G B

With the set of #s on the right side of the screen,(now for the tricky part Smile )count the letters from left to right.
Example:
line 5/ 7th letter is L / 7th letter is still L. Starting from the e in "entire" and counting left>right.
entire life and look where it got me.
continue that pattern for the trio set to get...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
L L U M O H H S O O N A S T T T I E

Anagram those 34 letters, and .........may I have a drum roll please.....
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
BRAHMS ODE TO LULL YOUNG TOTS SHH WE DID IT

If someone would be so kind as to check this out, I'd be most grateful.

vvith EYES crossed,
drizjr

Drizjr: The only problem is that, depending on the width of the browser window, the lines are different. The rest looks good, a lot of good work on your part, and it could just be that the PMs messed up on that aspect of the puzzle, not using a universal thing like sentences or such, but I would hope they wouldn't do something like that.
