Emma's Journal appears to be our primary path through the game.

NEW DIGS

The feel of the earth between my fingers. The smell of dust and decay invading my consciousness. The exhilaration of discovery.

My fellowship at UPenn has offered me the opportunity of a lifetime: an archaeological dig below the Temple Mount. I am humbled by my good fortune, and I'm going to make the most of it.

PROFESSOR MARGROVE

What am I doing here, exactly?

It all started when I read Professor Margrove's book, "Beneath the Holy City: Jerusalem's Secrets Revealed." His passion for the subject matter was infectious. It brought me halfway around the world, where I will work alongside Ian Margrove himself.

DREAM → REALITY !

FINDING THE CODE

Archaeology is like an immense puzzle written across time. It brings me back to my childhood and the "secret" language I shared with my friends. We thought we were being so smart, but anyone could have figured out that our special 26 numbers corresponded to the alphabet.

SPARE CHANGE

Of all the fantastic finds at the excavation site, my favorite pieces are the coins of the Simon bar Kokhba era.

He led a revolt against the Romans in the year 132, and then ruled an independent Jewish state for three years before being deposed. The remaining rebels organized an important new direction in the fight for independence and the coins that bear the bar Kokhba name commemorate his achievements.

THE SIEBENBERG HOUSE

One of the (many) sights I'm eager to visit is the Siebenberg House. So many layers of history in one place: from the legendary Maccabee family who inhabited during their Hasmonean dynasty (164-63 BCE), all the way back to the empty burial plots dated to the days of King David and his son Solomon (circa 3,000 BCE).

And then, there is the ring...

The bronze curio was probably used to unlock a jewelry box in the Second Temple era.

It is just one example of the wonders lurking in the Siebenberg House. Finds like this are what inspire new generations of antiquity seekers like myself.

THE SECRET LIFE OF DREIDELS

My fellow students and I have had a lot of downtime while traveling the Middle East, so we've started spinning dreidels. The gist of the game, as I understand it, seems to be that everybody takes a turn spinning the dreidel and as a result, I lose all my toothpicks (glad we aren't wagering actual cash).

More interesting than the game is the toy's history. I did some research at DreidelTrivia.com to keep informed.

UNWELCOME MESSAGE

I've spent my academic life looking past the facade of a given artifact, a people, or an epoch. So, why am I so easily deceived by individuals in the here and now?

I made the mistake of dabbling in a romance recently. I thought I knew him. I was wrong.

He just texted me and the words are as twisted as his personality.

One cute easter egg in the first video --

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you pause the video at just the right time, you can see a page in one of the books with a series of angles, like clock faces. It's semaphore for SEMAPHORE - another cipher from Decipher Demon. That means we've seen three of the six puzzle types shown in pictograph form on Journal Page 3 (leaving Braille, Binary, and Position for 2/26, presumably).

THIS IS WHAT ARCHEOLOGY IS ALL ABOUT

THE GOLDEN BELL OF ROBINSON'S ARCH

A precious artifact fell into a drainage ditch millennia ago, where it lay, forgotten, until recently. The Golden Bell of Robinson's Arch was discovered three years ago, and ever since I've been eager to see it with my own eyes. Today, I snuck a peek! Got into some trouble with the security guard, but it was well worth it.

The Torah dictated these bells were to be worn on the helm of the high priest's robes, alternating with ornamental pomegranates: bell, pomegranate, bell, pomegranate, etc. The sound of the bells signaled the wearer was entering the holy area and represented his internal struggle to attain enlightenment.

And another easter egg:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Similar to notgordian's find in the first video, there's binary code in her sketchbook that spells out the word BINARY. Now we've seen four of the six puzzle types.

GATED CITY

The world's full of fascinating cities, but Jerusalem's historical gates set it apart from the rest.

I really enjoy strolling through the popular Damascus Gate, also known in Arabic as Bab el Amud or "the gate of the pillar," and the Zion Gate, known as the "wounded gate" for being riddled with bullet holes. They left quite an impression on me.

Even though it's over a century old, New Gate is the youngest entrance into Jerusalem, opened by popular demand by Christians seeking access to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. There are more to go, and I intend to complete the circuit soon.

VIOLATED

When I was a little girl, our house was robbed. Nothing expensive was stolen, but I was terrified just thinking about a stranger pawing through my stuff. Now, there's a new intrude in my life, but he hasn't just invaded my physical space, he's gotten into my head.

He knows too much about me, so I've changed my passwords and added them where I didn't have them before (note to self: I chose the name of the biblical figured discussed on that ancient map site I visited earlier today).

NOTE TO SELF:
My favorite coding site features a page about Position Ciphers.

A WORD ON RELIGION

As a scientist, I try to be objective and impartial. I've never blindly followed any one discipline or faith, but I increasingly find myself transfixed by a particular image from the Kabbalah faith. The sephirot represents forces that shape our connection to the unknowable, a concept that intrigues me endlessly.

The sephirot is organized with masculine traits on the right side of the figure, feminine qualities to the left, and balanced ideals running down the center. While I don't subscribe to such antiquated gender roles, I do appreciate the goal of bettering oneself, for reasons either secular or religious.

LIONS AMONG US

The king of the jungle is also the king of Jerusalem - there are lion statues everywhere. My favorite is the relief at the Ethiopian Church. During my visit, I brushed up on my Ge'ez. Speaking of brushing up, I saw some guy taking fingerprints of the relief - weird.

Built in 1893, the structure is an enduring symbol of tranquility and community, though the lion on its edifice is quite ominous. The beast represents a royal lineage that stretches from King Solomon all the way to Haile Selassie, which makes the inscription above the door quite fitting - it says "The lion of Judas has conquered." Judah was the fourth son of Jacob, and founder of the Israelite Tribe that bears his name. His lion icon represents strength and heritage, and it graced the flag of Ethiopia until 1974. The regal cat is also featured in Jerusalem's emblem - fittingly dangerous and majestic for a city such as this.

A DISCOVERY

Most archaeologists work for years to make a discovery like the one we made today: we found what appears to be the sacred breastplate worn by high priests of the first temple.

I suppose it's too much to hope we'll find any of the gems that belong in the breastplate's empty slots. They say that if all twelve are placed exactly so, and used in conjunction with the mysterious Urim and Thummim, the breastplate acts as an oracle to speak directly to God.

You can feel the artifact's unearthly power in your hands. Now I sound more like Dr. Brody than Prof. Margrove, but at moments like these, it's not hard to imagine that maybe the movies get more right than we give them credit.

BETRAYAL

Another video. Another intrusion into my private life. He watched me while I was in bed, sleeping. Nothing sexual, but it's almost worse than that.

How is it that someone can make you feel like the center of the universe, and then feel like there's nowhere in that universe to hide? Ancient maps showed monsters in ever far-flung corner, surrounding everything. That's how I feel, and every monster bears HIS face.

Did anyone find a bonus yet? And are there any other groups/chats were people are collecting and talking about the story pieces and other aspects of DIG?

When you login and view your profile, one of the items listed is Bonus:

As to story pieces, I mean potentially hidden items that are not readily apparent
