Puzzles for all! (Puzzle #1)

In an attempt to curb my ARG withdrawal, I've decided to design a series of "puzzles" for all of you to solve...

Here are the general guidelines for solving and answering them:

- I'll generally post them as an image of some type, but sometimes they'll be in plain text form...
- Once you solve the image, take the answer to the image and go to this URL: http://www.peterjmags.com/puzzles/[answer].htm (with the puzzle's answer filled in, obviously).
- Read the question that you find on that page, answer it, and post that answer here.

This one's relatively easy I guess, but I'll try and make them harder and harder as I progress. I might also be giving out small prizes to the first people to solve the harder ones, but we'll see... Smile

Anyway, here's puzzle number one:

(Hmm... I just noticed that my web server has a tendency to automatically correct typos, e.g. "kohn.htm" automatically redirects to "john.htm" if the first one doesn't exist but the second one does. Does anyone know how to disable this? It's a nice feature, but it could make this game too easy...)

If it is an Apache server, you probably have mod_speling [sic] modules installed. By default, it is off, but the admin might have enabled it (for instance, to help uppercase/lowercase problems). You can create or modify your existing .htaccess and simply put "CheckSpelling Off" in there.

You do? Try here: http://www.peterjmags.com/puzzles/images/puzzle1.jpg

It shows fine with me...

I did a little work, lemme spoiler the progress:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I couldn't find the font anywhere Wink , so I substituted with letters, problem is, there are 33 different symbols, so probably some of them are capitals or punctuation. A remarkable thing is the fact that the first 20 characters are all different...

It reads (with the 7 extra letters noted as @, #, $, %, ^ and & :

ABCD EFG HIJKLMNOPQ
RSTTU VWTS
VLLD ALXJTJYZ VLLD ALXJTJY
HU@FI #KI $K HU%@
NLP^L &T *@DDLB RWIBL

I have used the cryptogram convertor on www.oneacross.com in the past, which came higly recommended by Sapagoo, but it seems to be down at the moment... anyone else have a good cryptogram solver at hand? Laughing

Well, ugh @ all the spoilers... I've got the image translated... doesn't give me the answer yet though Wink

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Using the Blockobats font (thanks Yanka Smile ), I deciphered the text. Every word starts with a capital, and there are three punctuation marks, comma, apostrophy and dash.

The text comes out as gibberish, but after ROT'ing (ROT-21 for line 1, ROT-16 for line 2, ROT 11 for line 3, ROT 6 for line 4 and ROT 1 for line 5) I get this:

When I'm Sixty-Four
Penny Lane
Good Morning, Good Morning
Don't Let Me Down
Leave My Kitten Alone

Should I be ashamed that I don't get it? I thought Beatles or Lennon at first, but that doesn't work...

Nice find Cater! So the answer to the question would be

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Actually I think we are just supposed to post it here?

[EDIT]

Ehrm, I misread the question... answer should be:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
David O. Selznick

I guess....

Heh, most people in #unfiction thought so too... I guess we all want a big trail of clues to lead us somewhere, not an isolated puzzle... anyway, I consider it your solve Caterpillar, I wouldn't have started trying to do something with the song lyrics for a long while Smile

Peter: NEXT PLEASE!! Wink
