META: Spies and Spyees: A Guide

Ok, there's been a lot of uproar lately about player spies in the ARG community. This is originally written for AWARE, but I think this could just as easily apply to any future ARG where such a scenario could exist.

SPIES: First off, and this is my honest opinion and what is starting to look like general consensus here, If you do intend on turning to the "dark side," You should let your intentions be known to the community playing this game as a whole. This will save you a lot of grief in the end, and people will know who to look to for juicy out-of-game info.

As for reporting things to your evil masters, do us all a favor and use some common sense. If it's posted here, or in the IRC channel or the guide, ask yourself if what you see is something that you would in-gamely be privy to. For example, conversations that you yourself have with game characters, or things that would normally make their way through the water-cooler rumor mill, such as the solve for cracking the OE website, is perfectly suitable for disclosure to the forces of evil. HOWEVER, correspondance that is posted between another player and any character/other player, especially any of your fellow spies, would NOT normally be privy to you, and should stay out of game. What recently happened with Jonathan is a prime example of how not to be an in-game spy.

SPYEES: Ok, so you just found out that JoeBloe here is spying for the bad guys. And you just had a rather cool chat with an in-game character. So, should the fact that Joe's lurking the forums keep you from posting this find? NOOOO! Post away!! If it's a common knowledge thing, then it's bound to make the rounds anyway, and if in-game it's private knowledge, trust the spies to keep their mitts off of it in-gamely. If they don't, they'll get spanked by PM and Player alike. Smile

EDIT: It was also pointed out to me that just because you know a player's a spy, you shouldn't go to the good guys and finger them as such without some good in-game proof. The same out-of-bounds rule that applies to them should also apply to you.

PMs/BTS:The above should all make sense to you already, you already know that player resources are supposed to be invisible to characters. I should add, though, that if a spy breaks ettiquite and sends something to a bad guy character that they shouldn't, do us all a favor and ignore it. If you like, give 'em a good slap while you're at it. Smile

And that's all I have to say about that.

And, I should add, I hope this is the last of it.

*takes the dead horse, cremates it, and scatters it's ashes to who-knows-where*

And with that, we move on. Very Happy
