This is my first time trying this. My problem isn't thinking of an idea, it's deciding which one to start with.

Yay!! unFictioners doing NaNoWriMo!!

You know, the NaNoWriMo before I discovered ARGs, I had just finished reading "The Dionaea House" and wanted to do my NaNo-Novel in that style - a distributed narrative that included emails, text messages, photos, etc. I didn't know anything about ARGs at the time but just happened to discover them about a month later (in the strangest, non-trailhead-related way, but that's another story). I never did get to do that novel, and now it's sort of a defunct idea, but I love that even my NaNoWriMo history is tied to ARGs.

This is my eighth NaNoWriMo; I started back in 2002. I used to go by the name "Moonsong" on the site (my old "internet name") but switched to using "OctoberDreaming" in 2007.

So, what are y'all writing about? Is anyone up for a brainstorming session or general discussion via chat at some point? Are you going to start writing at midnight on the 31st?

There, I joined. I think I've added most of you to my "writing buddies" list over there. I can't explain why I'm doing this now, when I've known about the event for years, decades even. I don't even think I have the urge to write a coherent novel, but I do think I can string together enough essays to keep my word count up for a while. Maybe it's because I've passed a certain age or I need a new hobby or whatever, but.... hell, I'm even going to go to my local region's meet-and-greet at the end of the month.

In that spirit, I've registered #nanowrimo for chatting at the usual IRC server, chat-solutions.org -- drop in and say "wtf am i doing?!?"

I joined too! I am the queen of unfinished projects (just ask my crafts bin) but I'm gonna try my hand at this. I'm hoping to use it as a writing exercise and pound some ideas out.

Thought I would post some fun links that I've found while obsessing over NaNo in a completely noob fashion:

Number of participants vs winners, per year: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/402661

A fun thread regarding "Pantsing" (as in, writing from the seat of your pants) vs pre-planning: http://www.nanowrimo.org/node/3268143

An excellent blog post regarding advise for Noob Pantsers: http://anywayiwasjustthinking.blogspot.com/2009/09/nanowrimo-essentials-for-noob-pantsers.html

Enjoy!

50K words sounds like an awful lot; I've had trouble with three page creative writing assignments in the past. Razz

Well, I got until November 1st to think about it, right?

Nighthawk, if you're a slow writer like me, trying to write 50K words in one month can be an exercise in extreme frustration. It's only 1,667 words a day, every day, for 30 days, but I'm lucky if I get 500 words/day - on a good day. And I rarely manage to write something every day. So... I stopped doing this for the word count a long time ago.

50K is a lot of words, but there's more to NaNoWriMo than just the writing. I mean, that's an important part of it (obviously!), but its value for me is found in connecting with other writers local to me, socializing with other writers - like you fine folks here on unFiction - and talking about writing, about our projects, doing group brainstorming, cheering each other on to the word count goal, and all that good stuff. So, even if I don't write 50K this month, I'll still get a lot out of it!

Since 2002, I've only crossed the 50K line twice. But I had fun every single year, no matter what.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if 50K is daunting but you still want to participate, just put the word count goal aside, make a commitment to write as much as you can, and partake of the other benefits of the event. If you've never done this before, it's a great experience. Miami Wrimos look to be pretty active, too, if you're interested in meeting folks in your area. Smile

You know, it's funny: the South Miami and West Kendall locations are *both* places I visit a LOT - Panera Bread. Smile

Who knows... I need to think about it, come up with an idea. Also, I got this certain other project that I don't want to take way my time from...

We'll see. Thanks!

ETA: No guarantee that I'll actually write word one, but you caught me at a point of weakness - http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/538145

Augh, I've been sucked in by the offer to write a story and the challenge of the project. Consider me joyously IN!

Hope to see us all doing well and organizing out time properly >_> which mostly applies to me (since I also have classes this semester >_<)
