The Numbers...ohhhh the numbers

gimlet wrote:
So i'm a little wary of trying to do anything much with these trailer images right now since they're such crappy quality, but a reddit user posted this

https://www.reddit.com/r/10cloverfieldlane/comments/45c89d/trailer_picture_megathread/czx5v5b

Waaaay at the bottom of the megathread. I actually think it looks like there's an 8 on one shoulder and a 6 in the other.

68 is the same number the football player is wearing.

I kind of wonder if that means these two pictures denote Howard. Perhaps 68 is the year he left High School Football and enlisted to become a sailor monkey? Then was a Radioman in Vietnam in '70?

Goodman was born in 52. In 68 he would have been 16/17. The enlistment age in the US is 17.

Oh wow. When Howard was his daughters age he was in the shit. That's some nice mirroring. Also might explain his PTSD meltdown, as those sorts of things can be very triggering.

I love your enthusiasm in going mad for the game, I feel you, we've all been down the rabbit hole and some of us *looks at self* still wear foil hats! Foily!

But remember sometimes the symbols and meanings are just a surface scratch:

*Navy Monkey, Howard in Navy, picture on magazine he holds, number to cipher, code, link
*Survival Pants, Prepper
*Football team, he was. army team etc..

In most instances were never going to get into a deep story, we might just come out of it with a facebook status of who these people are.

Megan when young, what she likes, has preppier dad knows, somethings coming.. has a scene in movie..

Howard, Prepper, Navy guy, worked for Tagruato, found out secret..what secret was.. we get links

As for the numbers they seem more significant for there being a little hunt (crosses fingers) When I saw 68 I thought IP address at some point but until we've a proven list, no sense trying code lines Smile

We have a month left of intrigue and possible finds (really crosses fingers) I hope they know that we are looking to hunt not just be fed and with the recent flashes in the trailers I think...they know we like fresh meat Twisted Evil

If it's true that we're part of some immersive fiction, I suspect that as soon as next week we might see a post by Megan in the page, as Howard gets increasingly paranoid and anxious. Like, we weren't supposed to figure out what the gift was since it's something only she would know (despite all of our attempts), so she's the one that will communicate with him. It's less fun but it would explain why so far no one has cracked it.

So about these trailer flashes ---

they are cool and all and I'm definitely interested to see where they go. BUT these trailers (or at least the flash parts) will have to be released online, right?? I mean, why would a major film studio sign off on a marketing campaign that actually encourages people to surreptitiously record the trailers?? That's lunacy from their perspective.

I actually edited my post before you made yours, so you should re read that.

Also it's not a stretch at all - we know Howard was a navy vet, we have radioman 70 which has a very particular meaning. We know apx how old the actor is. Just putting those things together is pretty elementary.

I do think it's just light story background for Howard. The numbers in each image may have some sort of coded meaning too, but it's really too early to know/say.

Yeah unless we had a natural lead like social account etc to go from. I mean right now the only lead in that is sure, if any is. Tagurarto emails to FAPT.

A clean digital version is the smartest choice, but who knows how long they will let the flavor soak in for "oh i saw a flash of something"..more fish in the net deal? "Hope"

Ironically, that was, how I have got to know about Cloverfield back to 2007. I've heard about that weird trailer, shown before Transformers. People were recording this trailer, posted them to YouTube and Paramount Pictures was NOT AMUSED (they deleted videos, blocked accounts and stuff, see also here).

So I wondered, why Paramount Pictures was so mad about somebody posting this pathetic trailer - and so I was full into Cloverfield universe. (Their copyright anger made best viral marketing - or it was already planned, what I doubt).

Now here we see practically the invitation to film in the cinema theater. Interesting development Smile

Well, trailers are advertisements, so what company is going to complain about people sharing their ads? Also, if they're only available to see in theaters, that means people have to buy movie tickets to see them. Ka-ching.

At this point however, attempting to interpret the images reminds me of the herculean attempts we made to analyze the sea critters shown floating around in the animations at slusho.jp. Very Happy

What's your problem exactly? It was speculation. I'm not saying it's what's happening, I'm speculating on what could be happening, given what we've been shown? I'm just sharing the narritive my mind is creating aloud, and I actually backed down from it after some thought and you're still calling me an asshole? WTF?

No..no..no..NO...I never called you that...

In any case no need or want to discuss it, here or anymore.

Well. Maybe my diagnosis of Howard with PTSD is a total stretch (I'm not a professional and he's not my patient OBVS - bit he's also fictional so I don't feel too bad about it), but I'm a little familiar with it, and pretty much all of his actions are SUPER consistent with it. It explains all his behavior we've seen so far. If he was a vet in Vietnam that's really really common. It's also not something that ever goes away, really. 40 years later it can hit you all over again - especially if you are retraumatized (with, say, New York being destroyed by a monster).

Here's a primer:

http://www.helpguide.org/articles/ptsd-trauma/post-traumatic-stress-disorder.htm

Paranoia, outbursts of anger, anxiety, shaking (like the scene at the dinner table, which I've wondered about), minimizing & avoiding (the board games, puzzles, music from his youth while the world is literally burning) flashbacks, hyper-vigilance. It's textbook.

The part about not remembering traumatic events makes me go hmmmmm.
Because he doesn't Remember Megan as she is, but as she was. There's something there.

More than all this, the idea that he has PTSD gives me sympathy for his character. Pathos which I wouldn't have otherwise. Instead of just seeing him as a crazy conspiracy theorist, I see him as a broken man. A tragedy in the Greek sense.

Also, I've been confused by swamp pop for a while. We all are. What was the point? Remember when I said one thing it could be showing us is that we're going to have to work together? I feel like that's maybe what all these clips in different theaters are, exactly. A puzzle to put together, that has to be done collaboratively. Just like all the characters in the trailer work on Catfish.

I could be totally off base with this, but right now I think that puzzle is: who is Howard?

Edit: Think We're Alone Now was a hit single in 1967 - when John Goodman - and potentially Howard - was in highschool. Too young to enlist, old enough to know the song and identify with the lyrics on a very personal level. Interesting.

Radioman, Radiogirl. The historically important in radio transmissions Eiffel Tower in every part of the game and in trailers. We have done nothing with radio angle- must be missing something.

I know nothing about what I am about to hypothesize but is it possible that the numbers relate to the Hertz frequency a Sine wave is to be played at, like keys on a piano, and by combining them in the right order we get the tune of a song? Think Close Encounters. How that would help us I have no idea.

/r/10CL
New, cleaner subreddit for discussion

Hopefully this isn't against the rules. Anyhow, I'm aware that the main subreddit for 10 Cloverfield Lane is a bit of a mess, with not much moderation. We created a new one to hopefully remove the clutter and memes so there will be a place for more answers, more civil discussions, and less irrelevant information. Think the unfiction version of the subreddit. So, /r/10CL will have active mods and we welcome y'all to come provide input!

We've got a doc that gets everyone caught up on what's current, as well as a Discord chat where we have both on-topic and off-topic chats. Hope to see y'all there!
