Contact with Steven Lake: IRC May 7/04 @ 6:55PM (PST)

While chatting on #unfiction, I noticed someone with the username SLake enter and leave. So, I did a whois and noticed the name was Steven Lake. I quickly invited SLake into a chat room (#SLake), and we moved to #L3 at his request.

His WHOIS info, by the way, is:
SLake is slakeSPLAT296d6466.1c25dec6.cyberpass.net * Stephen Lake
SLake using meteor.de.eu.hub.chat-solutions.org Death from the skies
SLake has been idle 53secs, signed on Fri May 07 18:55:44
SLake End of /WHOIS list.

It's all greek to me, but maybe it means something?

Here is a log of our conversation, it's not much but I thought I should atleast share, so we're all aware of this new character:
* Now talking in #l3
<saucey> hello
<SLake> Hello.
<saucey> Are you Steven Lake of Landau, Luckman and Lake?
<SLake> Yes.
<saucey> Hello. I just sent you an email via your website
<SLake> I'm getting emails from this group of people. They claim to be part of ideltech.
<saucey> I am one of those people, sir. I work for Marcus Thesburg.
<SLake> Then you should know already that I can't divulge anything regarding your company.
<saucey> Well, yes and no. You see, Marcus has been advising people to talk to you with regards to the newflash on our corporate website
<SLake> Or are you just someone who is pretending to work for Ideltech.
<saucey> Did you receive my email? from djoyceSPLATideltech.com?
<saucey> perhaps you would like me to verify who I am?
<SLake> Let me check
<saucey> Alright.
<SLake> Nothing in my inbox but spam.
<saucey> That's odd, I sent the email via the webcontact.
<saucey> serviceSPLATlandau-luckman-lake.com <service@landau-luckman-lake.com>
<saucey> perhaps it's in the general mailbox
<SLake> Do you even know my email address?
<SLake> It sounds like your some nosey little busybody for a newspaper.
<SLake> Hello?

<saucey> No
<saucey> I am not Melody Heller
<SLake> No. I suspect you're not.
<SLake> slakeSPLATlandau-luckman-lake.com is my email address
<saucey> thank you
<saucey> Should I send you an email there to verify my identity?
<SLake> That would be a good start.
<saucey> it's on its way
<saucey> well that's interesting, it was undeliverable
<saucey> invalid address slakeSPLATlandau-luckman-lake.com
<SLake> try lake@ both worked this morning or i wouldnt be getting ads for viagra
<saucey> okay, it's on the way
<SLake> Okay. So you've got an email address with Ideltech. <saucey> yes
<saucey> I also have a 'letter of employment' from Jude Williams
<saucey> or, rather an email confirming my employment
<saucey> as well as an attached letter welcoming me to the organization
<saucey> on official company letterhead
* SLake has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)

I have sent Mr. Lake another email to see why he disappeared and when we can continue our conversation.

So, the mystery deepens. Now what?

Has Melody been talking to the lawyers at L3? He seemed a bit testy. Maybe alot of people have been emailing him. Then again, it may just be because he's a lawyer.

Talk with Steven Lake Part II

Here is my second chat with Mr. Lake:

* Now talking in #l3
<saucey> !op
* SLake has joined #l3
<SLake> shall we continue?
<saucey> yes please
<SLake> Where did we leave off? My WAP went nuts
<saucey> I understand, mine does that too
<saucey> let's see...confirming my identity I suppose
<SLake> I believe I was asking you if you knew what TOBI was.
<SLake> BTW. Ideltech doesn't have an office in Canada.
<saucey> No, I'm an independent contractor
<SLake> No you don't know what TOBI is?
<saucey> I mean, no, I know there's no operation in Canada
<saucey> from what I understand about TOBI...
<saucey> it was a program designed as a college project in AI
<saucey> which was programmed to hunt for information
<saucey> and report back to the programmers
<saucey> but, it had hacked into sensitive gov't data
<saucey> which set off alarms
<saucey> the gov't questioned Marty, Marcus and Jude (it's creators)
<saucey> and ended up giving them a contract to obtain info
<saucey> to help fight the war on terror
<SLake> I know who they are, I'm more concerned with what you know about what TOBI found.
<saucey> How am I doing?
<saucey> TOBI had "cracked" a Croatian government's computer during its search.
<SLake> I'll need to speak to Marcus. This is highly unusual for an employee to be communicating with his corporation's legal counsel. He didn't tell me employees would be emailing me.
<saucey> Sure, not a problem.
<saucey> I believe he gave instructions to Mr. Reid Miles to contact you,
<saucey> and Mr. Miles passed it along to me
<SLake> For all I know you're some guy who hacked into their email server.
<saucey> I can prove that I was hired by Ideltech
<SLake> I've got an email forwarded to me from our receptionist from a Reid Miles. He could be you too.
<saucey> No, we are definitely not the same people
<saucey> I have a letter confirming my employment with Ideltech from Jude Williams
<SLake> Really? What's your employee number?
<saucey> xxxxxx [password for email]
<SLake> I'll be in touch. Are you and the rest of the employees going to keep sending emails and such? If so we need to streamline this process.
<saucey> Should I ask them to stop sending emails? Perhaps we can do a conference on mIRC?
<SLake> I hate typing. Besides these chat programs aren't very good.
<SLake> I'll see if I can arrange a conference call.
<saucey> Sure, sounds good.

So, for the meantime we shouldn't flood L3 with emails.

PS>I'll edit this later and bold Mr. Lakes statements for easier reading

Ok, here is log of the chat we had in #l3 late friday night. It's really long, so I've just attached the .txt file.

Summary: Steven Lake can't talk to us yet because he doesn't know who we are. If we want to be able to talk to him, we need to email him at lake@ or slakeSPLATlandau-luckman-lake.com from our Ideltech accounts with our Employee Number and Name. (Employee Number I've been told is the id # we got for our passwords - anyone else wanna confirm). We can't email before Saturday morning as the email servers aren't secure yet. After he confirms our identities, he will be able to talk to us more freely.

Thanks for posting the log Rowan!

Just a tip, you might want to log in to your webmail and change your passwords before handing over your original one...just a thought.

still can't sleep

I wouldn't bother to read it. What I got from the long and fruitless chat:

1. Marcus passed us off to the lawyers because he didn't know what to say to us. Stephen doesn't have anything much to add and he won't until Marcus clears us.

2. Stephen Lake had a conference call with the buyer in which he was threatened and in which the buyer's offer was turned down. He called it the most unprofessional conversation. The buyer prefers to deal with Marcus directly. (which may mean the buyer is not represented by an attorney, it is a breach of ethics for a lawyer to speak directly to an opposing party when the lawyer know that party is represented by counse. )

3. Stephen Lake is bound by the same confidentiality agreement as Ideltech, I am assuming that is the one with the Department of Defense.

4. Stephen Lake is going to Washington D.C. on Monday ( he wouldn't say why) but he will post his travel plans.

5. Stephen is going to clear with Marcus who he can and can't talk to.

6. Stephen didn't dismiss the idea that we could be of help in finding out information about potential buyers, but that doesn't mean we will.

7. We didn't mention the threats from the tape from Elias as we didn't want to get him in trouble.
