Ohhh, the first one is really nifty! It'll come in handy for upcoming ARGs that require some on-the-fly morse decodification Smile
Gonna try and install both to see how they fare.

Oh yes, Cypher Tools are in my everyday use in the world of ARGs (from the both sides of curtain). You can de- and encrypt Smile

I like the one for Mac that you linked yesterday, It's been working nicely. Funny thing is, I was looking for a SSTV encoder, decoder before I found the ARG and started in. SSTV is part of the HAM Radio world and you can even receive images from the ISS when it passes over, if they are transmitting. The 'Lost Apollo Tapes' are the magnetic tapes of the radio signal that contained the audio, data, and SSTV video signals from the Apollo 11 mission. We have the SSTV converted to NTSC for television broadcast, which is what people watched on the tvs at home, but the conversion wasn't set up properly and we got low quality video from that. If NASA can find the magnetic tapes and still read them, the SSTV could be re-converted and we'd have a better video of the first man on the moon.
Just a little FYI.

Actually this SSTV thing is so promising in its functionality. I ask myself if some musicians used their songs with hidden images?

Probably not, the SSTV audio is quite harsh. It would be hard to get it mix in well with most music... unless it's some of that growling, screaming, punk music that I can't think of the name of right now... you know, where if go to a concert, you're likely to get sprayed with raw meat or something...

You mean noise, or power electronics Smile

I used to be a fan, it's not too unlike jazz in some aspects (and I don't mean the harshness of it, more like the improvisational aspect)... I still like some "harsh music" though not so much like this, but as you can possibly assume, I definitely see the potential of this technology to embed some hidden data.
Either way, things like these make me wonder if there's some experimental bands that have tried this before and I've missed it for not knowing of its existence.

True, there probably are bands that have experimented with it. I can't image that the resulting video would be that good... extra noises distort the video quality. You would really want to isolate the SSTV audio from everything else to get a good picture. The quality of the picture we got wasn't that great due to the background music that was with it. I'm sure that was intentional, giving us a lower quality picture, so we can speculate away on what it could be.

I'm thinking about experimental Noise Bands like "Einstürzende Neubauten " or perhaps somebody from Warp Records (Aphex Twin, Red Snapper). This would be actually awesome to listen their music and see their hidden messages with help of smartphone.

It would be as awesome, spooky and nerdy as Number Stations project "Conet"

Couldn't you hide it in the channels? The stereo channels? Then it could be set to play at an very low volume that doesn't particularly affect the music, and be isolated and taken out using audio programs to be decrypted?

I feel like somebody has done that before...

EDIT: also, yes it seems Aphex Twin has hidden spectrograms in their music before. A few other bands have as well, including (not surprisingly) NIN and the FEZ soundtrack.

http://twistedsifter.com/2013/01/hidden-images-embedded-into-songs-spectrographs/

No SSTV though. Also great article on how tracks can be hidden on Wikipedia.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_track

I feel like you could put all these things together and come up with something pretty cool.

In particular, with SSTV hidden on the outside rim of a vinyl record (and all the money in the world) you could kick off such an awesome retro, analog ARG.

Yes, my thoughts exactly, something like a bonus tracks of sorts in a locked groove would be perfect to put an SSTV image and let people go nuts trying to figure out when the next album (or even a link to a secret EP) could drop. I don't like the band but I know Radiohead had some interesting ARG a while ago to promote In Rainbows if I'm not mistaken, same as NIN. Pretty sure they wouldn't hesitate to get their hands on some of these ideas to hint at future releases. Hell, I know I would!

Yep, NIN definitely did things like this as part of their ARG for Year Zero. I can't dig it all out of the forums here, but http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/index.php?f=218

(still love that album)

 It's the mother

I know the ARG is probably over, but I haven't seen the movie yet so I'm still going to speculate, that is, if you all don't mind. lol.

My theory for the orbiting object is that it's an adult Clovie. Afterall, the monster was known to just be a baby, right? I don't know if the movie rules this out as a possibility, but from what I understand
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it doesn't really give many answers for the ARG

I really need to see this film. Aargh! Mad

Folks keep saying the game is over, which makes no sense.

There's no conclusion, no resolution - and we just got introduced to a new, important Russian who sends a secret picture. Why in the world bother to do that as an ending?

I'll say it again: things are happening and we're just not putting pieces together properly.

I agree that it seems like the Arg might not be quite over yet, but when asked in his AMA if there was anything we missed, Dan said he's been watching us pretty closely and no, he was shocked we found everything as quickly as we did.

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/49ivkx/i_am_dan_trachtenberg_director_of_10_cloverfield/d0s5591?context=3

More than that, during the red carpet walk (footage on Periscope) he implicated a specific woman as maybe being in charge of this ARG and she is a VP of interactive marketing at Paramount who in the past worked in the capacity of a publicist. Not a former puppet master or game designer (though she may have worked closely with one). My inclination is to think the design on this just wasn't very complicated, seemingly the work of a amateur. That fits with what we know of her.

Also, there's past precedent to consider. Most Bad Robot args just aren't that complicated, though they are usually longer than this (but obviously that's because we knew about the way before we did this one).

I think there may be things that will yet come back into play (maybe in an arg, maybe in another movie) because I think there's still a lot of cards the Cloverfield world is holding close to. There is no way for us to see them, until they chose to show us them.
