Level 7 wasn't too hard...

1. Find the hidden image on the homepage.
2. Upload it to http://www.imageforensic.org/ and click on the ELA tab.
3. Using the hidden message, you now know the registration path and the key for the...
4. Steganography encrypted message.
5. Enter the proper key using any Open-source software and voila, you're given the registration code to use.

There are some people outside of UF that claim to have done it, namely:

/u/gacbmmml, who posted the ARG to Reddit.

I'm gacbmmml on Reddit. I'm not affiliated with the ARG creators in the slightest. The other two you mentioned I don't know either, but they each know one another so I'm told.

I got into Level 7 (was number 20) and want to work on Level 6 next just for funsies. Keep up the good work!

Anyone closer to finding out who THEY are yet?

Yeah, when I solved 6 I threw out that theory and I'm not going to research that any further. I'll stick to the challenges we're given.

Tonight I finally have time to start on level 6! Here's hoping I can figure something out...

I really hope I can puzzle this out...

There's no sound file type anywhere, all I found was
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
https://levels.your-host.xyz/wp-content/themes/levels/level06.css?ver=1476224939, with
".iswav {
contents: '/level06.txt';
}"
inside the code

Well, I've found SOMETHING. I'm pretty sure it's halfway or part of the way to registering for level 6, but what sort of lunatic does this sort of thing for FUN?

Oh wait. ARG players do.

Hm.

Hmmm.

EDIT: Well, I solved the Level 6 puzzle. Pain in tuckas, but I know the answer.

I won't be registering for Level 6, however. I bounced ideas off of someone, and I didn't know that some of the stuff in the challenge was initially possible, so I can't say I did it alone with integrity. I'll try again with Level 5, I guess.

So.... Since collaboration is encouraged in as much as research methods, and given that I am new to this, would anyone be willing to share their methods or tools used to decrypt or discover messages hidden in audio, video and images?

I have tried several of the steganography tools mentioned by this site and users, but I'm not sure they're up to date or functional. I saw mention of audacity and a couple other audio analyzers, but have yet to try them. And I'm not even sure to what extent messages can be hidden in videos beyond the normal alterations of levels.

Any info on current tools that other users find useful would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

(This is not a test and I claim no ability to provide you with credit based on your answers...) Wink

I saw this the other day, but didn't have time right then to look at it....and then forgot about it, so missed the timeline for Level 7.

Level 6 was easy (with the prior ARG and other experience I have), so am now registered Smile

Hope to see more of you in there soon.

Regarding methods...

1. You can hide data in images in a variety of ways:
-- EXIF Metadata... sometimes there might be location/GPS data, or hidden phrases encoded.
-- Pixel alterations... which can lead to two things, a) changing the color balance / levels of the image to see watermarks or hidden text that is one minor degree away from the color next to it and b) via steganography which does the same thing, but the pixels altered seem random but with a passcode can be "reorganized" so to speak with a steganography program, like OpenStego.
-- GIFs... sometimes you'll see an image which you think is a still image, but when viewed as a GIF will have a frame of animation that contains the answer you're looking for.

2. You can hide data in sound files very similarly:
-- EXIF Metadata... which we discussed above; author, track name, etc
-- Morse Code is always popular. Beep Beep Boop, etc.
-- Spectrogram / Waveform views... sometimes you can "write" text in a spectrogram format that sounds like gibberish but is "readable" like writing on a paper when viewed properly via an app like Audacity. The same thing might come into play with a Waveform as well, but it's less common.
-- Pitch / Direction / Speed... you can hide messages by playing the sounds backward or at double speed or half speed, or maybe even by changing the pitch (speed stays same, but the sounds themselves are higher/lower).
-- Multiple audio channels... often times audio tracks are separated out into two distinct tracks, one might be vocal and the other background noise. Using Audacity to separate out those channels can lead to a decipherable message.

Hope that helps!

I dont know how PM imagines preventing people to collaborate. There are countless ways to communicate. forums, wikis, IRC, discord... They cant infiltrate all communities.

I've actually spoken at length with the people behind the website using the "Contact Us" option on the website, and I don't think they INTEND on preventing us. Oh, they'll probably disqualify anyone who visibly collaborates on the entry puzzles, if they can see proof of it, but I don't think that's really their intention.

It's a matter of integrity. I think their whole Level system is a way of gauging the level of skills and capabilities of the people playing the game and trying to roughly approximate rankings for them to start off at. Let me share something they sent to me in an email conversation:

Quote:
Honesty and integrity are two of the most highly-valued traits we seek in members.

Our enjoyment of our endeavors comes from many sources, but primarily from those like you who report they have increased their knowledge, and feel happiness and pride for having done so.

It's almost like this Level game is designed to encourage more people to learn and develop to play in other ARGs...

Level 5 is online.

For some reason PM deleted latest cryptic tweet.

Quote:

I have no idea what was MsdLygldrBs supposed to be.

PM can send me private message if they want this post deleted.

Edit:
I got answer on discord:

Quote:

it was audio that was reversed
audio reversed and sped up is "We are watching. We will always be watching"
its private now though
