[UPDATE] Amboy Monthly (May 24th) News/Feature/Editorial

New news article:

Mason Bees: Cinderella of the Bee world

by Melody Heller, Amboy Monthly

Mason Bees are often overlooked as orchard workhorses they are, because they do not produce Honey. These gentle Bees do not aggressively defend their homes, generally only stinging if trapped in clothing or handled roughly. Flower gardens and orchards are better pollinated by Mason bees, who actively gather pollen than Honeybees that only pick up pollen in passing as they gather nectar. As their name implies, Mason bees use mud to line the holes and plug the top.

Because Mason bees only require a few ¾ inch holes to lay their eggs in, one does not need to build a large house for them. A simple untreated piece of lumber with holes drilled in it, protected from wind and rain, and set where it will get morning sun is suficient. Be aware that after a few years the holes will be too dirty for the bees to use. There are commercial straw inserts that you can get, which will allow you to take the filled nesting ones out and store in a safe place until next spring and allow you to put fresh inserts in the next year for the new bees to use. Because Mason bees are either Male or female, with no workers, they are considered solitary bees, but they do like to live close to each other.

Mason Bees nest from Early spring to summer, but after that time the bee houses, or straw liners, can be moved somewhere for safer storage from the elements, such as a shed. The larvae eat the pollen and nectar that have been stored in the cell with them, then pupate until the following year.
As long a there is a ready food supply such as flowers or fruit trees, and a clean place to build their nests, your mason bees with increase in number year after year, providing you with plentiful fruit and flower beds that produce lots of seeds for next year.

And a new feature: Interview with Jude!

Interview with Jude Williams

by, Melody Heller, AmboyMonthly.com

This week I manages to catch up with Jude Williams, one of the CEO's of Ideltech.

Amboy Monthly: there you are.. got time to do an interview
Jude Williams: OK
AM: So how have you been?
JW: great and you?
AM: Fine.
AM: People are very curious Jude, with Marus acting as the front man for the company they haven't had the same opportunuity to get to know you or Marty. What sort of things would you say people would find the most startling about you?
JW: about me? I dont know I'm just a regular Joe. Nothing startling here.
AM: What do you think about all the ruckus from the protestors?
JD: I think they are over re-acting to a degree. We want to stop terrorism not snoop on regular families.
AM: But you must admit that sometimes even people with the best intentions can go too far without realizing it?
JW: We made our mistake in College. It cost the three of us our graduate degrees, and Dr. Roddington his tenure. We won't make that mistake again.
AM: OK, fair enough. Tell me a bit about your fiance' Ginny...
JW: Shes wonderful. I met her through Marcus.. First time I laid my eyes on her I couldn't take them off again.. We've been together ever since. She's sweet, thoughtful, kind, caring, need i say more?
AM: So have the two of you set a date?
JW: Not yet.. With everyting going on at ideltech we decided to hold off until TOBI is deployed and everything running smoothly.. then I should have more time to help plan a wedding and honeymoon
AM: I'm sorry, but I have to ambush you with the next question...
JW: eeek
AM There are rumors going around that the recent car bombing may be related to the unnamed company that has made offers to buy the rights to TOBI. Does that worry you at all?
JW: Yes it worries me. I'm hoping it was just a warning and not attempted murder. But I'm changing my habits and the way I do things for now.
AM: Understandable.
AM: Jude, I was wondering if you could tell me what you hope will make TOBI different from other search programs?
JW: What we wanted to do was replicate how good detectives can put random facts together and use it to locate the correct suspect, call it experience, call it deductive reasoning, that ability to catch the subtle nuances... the human element.
AM: Wow, that sounds like a tall order.
JW: We have worked very hard on this and are hoping our employees will be able to help us fine tune TOBI's programing.
AM: Thank you for your time Jude, I do appreciate it.
JW: Any time, Melody.

Freedom of Association

by Melody Heller, AmboyMonthly.com

While it may not be expressly spelled out in the US Constitution, there are certain types of association that are protected under the law. Two types of assiciation that are protected according to the Supreme Court are intimate association which are protected under the right of privacy or personal liberty, and expressive association under the right of freedom of speech, assembly and religion.

Professor Stephen Neff, an inter-national human rights scholar has stated "The distinctive conceptual feature of freedom of association is its hybrid character, as both an individual and a collective right."
The European Commision has defined freedom of association as "a general capacity for the citizens to join, without interference by the State, in associations in order to attain various ends." So it appears that "Freedom of Association" is seen as a basic right not just in the United States, but also elsewhere in the world.

Just as groups protested against the Governmental use of the Carnivore program stating that it would infringe on the right of Freedom of Association, so also do people have a concern over Ideltech's research. Carnivore was a threat to personal liberty by simply by looking through e-mails and choosing possible threats based on their word choice, regardless of the manner in which the words were used. Do we want to be protected from terrorists? Sure, we all want that. The question becomes, how much of your personal liberty do you want to give up for it? Perhaps The Restorers want only to ensure that your personal liberty, your basic Human Right, is not taken away while you sleep.

Well, with somewhat unique first name like Mason, I'm not used to seeing my name in print that much...and now there's a whole article about bees that share my name....just kinda odd Wink

I have responded in kind and asked her to publish my response under the first amendment. Very Happy

That's funny. I hope she publishes it. This is a clever addition to our little story.

But you realize that the first amendment doesn't really apply to newspapers? It's only a prohibition on government abridgement of speech, not a publication like this.

Maybe you need to start your own competing newspaper???
