Did the lack of sleep have me imagining things tonight? Jude was asleep under the desk. Will was in the other room taking a cat nap. Marty was gone to get some NoDoz and Jolt Cola. I was all alone with the sound of computer fans and disk-drives. Then I heard a sound. A strange sound that said something. It was like the sound when you turn the distortion up on a Peavey. But it sounded like it was saying some thing. I am not sure. But it sounded like "TobI is looking for resorces for repair." We never taught him that. I don't know alot about how he works, but if he is going to talk he needs this like cartridge hard drive put in one of his ports. Nothing was in there. nothing at all. I woke up Jude to show him, but nothing. The program quit doing it. I looked like I had gone mad. Jude told me I had to leave and get some sleep. But before I sleep I need to get this written down.

I think the voice was real. This wouldn't be the first time that the program unexpectedly overcame an obstacle. Don't forget the time he found the complete text of a book simply by being shown the front cover. Maybe this is just more of the strange behaviour that Dr Roddington noticed.

I'm with you, Lysithea. That was exactly what was going through my mind. Remembering the discussion of the meaning of AWARE. TOBI becomes AWARE (i.e. sort of "alive"). And this is just the start of it.
The question then remains, will TOBI be good or evil?

Heh, how often do computers gain sentience, and then work to help mankind? If sci-fi has taught me anything, its that self-aware computers are ALWAYS evil!!

Actually, my experience has taught me that sentient computers aren't necessarily good or evil, they just have their own agenda, and they don't care about human beings unless we get in the way of their plans. Then they crush us like insects...

Asimov Didn't Asimov have kind, paternalistic robot overlords in his writing? I was always intrigued at the idea that a higher degree of intelligence possible through science fiction might also imply a higher degree of morality. As if knowledge implied responsibility. Hmmm...
Does anyone know the reference of which I'm speaking?

Asimov had relatively harmless robots, but they were robots that had been programmed to be that way by humans. Granted, they were self-aware, but they were made that way, they didn't develop sentience on their own.....
but i'll admit i haven't read everything he's written, i could very easily be missing something

I shutter to mention such a movie along side the discussion, but the Matrix (at least in the later installments) included instances of computer programs who were evil, good, and benign. I think it is the arrogance of mankind to assume that another sentient creation, particularly one we created, would have no true morality or compassion beyond it's own desires or requirements. That only naturally occuring mental structures are capable of discerning right and wrong. Let's not forget Johnny Five.
For the record I'm still skeptical that that was TOBI. There are many people who would want to convince Marcus and the boys of the dangers TOBI does represent. But I also don't doubt that TOBI could be capable of finding another way to communicate verbally, if he felt it necessary to his programming.
