Update: News article "Physical Abuse in Relationships&q

Quote:
Physical Abuse in Relationships, a silent threat
by Melody Heller, Amboy Monthly

This caption provided by Stegg Woman's Shelter

Estimates range from 1 in 10 to 1 in 3, that by the time a woman leaves High School and College she will be the victim of physical abuse.

In fact, battering constitutes the largest portion of injuries to women, more than the combined total of muggings, rape and car accidents. In the age group of women twenty to forty-five it is the second leading cause of death. The definition of physical abuse from Behave Net (www.behavenet.com) "Non-accidental physical behavior inflicted by a person in a trusted or responsible relationship with the victim which may be unwanted and which may lead to emotional or physical injury. This commonly involves striking or restraint of the victim. This may also include allowing or creating situations where this occurs."

Per UN statistics, the percentage of physical abuse against women by an intimate partner in the United States is similar to such countries as Australia, Chile, Mexico and Thailand, 20% to 25%. Countries which had less abuse include Switzerland, Philippines, and South America. It is surprising to note that both Canada and the United Kingdom has a significant higher level. In some third world countries the percentage was as high as 60%. It is difficult to tell how accurate these numbers are, since the various studies used to produce them had very different criteria for what constituted abuse. Some defined it as anything "more than slaps" and exclude pushes and slaps, while others used "hitting" to define the level but excluded pushing and shoving, unless it involved pushing down stairs. One wonders what the real numbers would be if the same benchmarks were used for all countries.

If the estimates are close to accurate that means that one of every ten women that you have met today has at some time, received a slap, punch, push or shove from someone she was or is in a relationship with. That is, unless that person is you.

new letter to editor

There is also an new letter to the editor including a pic of Melody... I dunno if this one's stegged though. y2kBozo: Nice work on the destegging! Care to check this one out? Smile
Quote:
Dear Ms Heller,

I read with interest your editorial piece on the European Union's rights to the freedom of association as laid down under Article 11 of The European Convention on Human Rights. I note however that you did mention the following caveats,

ARTICLE 11(2)

No restrictions shall be placed on the exercise of these rights [Freedom of peaceful assembly and association] other than such as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interest of national security or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others. This article shall not prevent the imposition of lawful restrictions on the exercise of these rights by members of the armed forces, of the police or of the administration of the State. [1]

Further a Nation State may derogate from theses rights, with the possible exception of Article 3, under Article 15(1) of the convention as detailed below,

ARTICLE 15(1)

In time of war or other public emergency threatening the life of the nation any High Contracting Party may take measures derogating from its obligations under this Convention to the extent strictly required by the exigencies of the situation, provided that such measures are not inconsistent with its other obligations under international law. [1]

Which in deed the Government of the United Kingdom have done with regard to Article 5(1) allowing then to detain without trial individuals who would face torture if deported. [2]

I note also that within the United State the freedom of association is not entirely sacrosanct. For example I site the case of the August Nation Golf Club.

"In February 2003 when protests were anticipated over the exclusion of women from membership at the August Nation Golf Club where golf's Masters Tournament is played every year. The Richmond County, George county commission implemented a new rule requiring 20 days of advance notice before a protest, and giving the county sheriff the power to approve or deny permits, and to dictate the location of demonstrations. The sheriff turned down a permit to protest in front of the golf club but approved a protest half a mile away. Two courts upheld the ordinance granting the sheriff this power." [3]

Perhaps Ideltech should consider requesting such a order to protect their staff and property from another demonstration similar to that of 26 April 2004, though maybe this would be better covered by 'NOISE abatement' legislation.

I look forward to reading this letter in AmboyMonthly and perhaps also the views of other readers in accordance with your much cherished first amendment.
Best Wishes as always,
Mr S Fox

Dear Mr. Fox,

Ideltech is free to pursue any legal means available to them to protect their employees and property, should they feel it necessary to do so. There are times when protestors have not been able to contain their emotions to an acceptable level, and in those cases, do feel that setting boundaries for them is in order to maintain a safe environment for all
parties involved.

I am not the legal counsel for Ideltech, but it is my understanding that they have retained a fine firm to handle those issues for them. Perhaps you could bring this information to their attention.

Thanks for your intrest!
Melody

ACK!!!!!

Slyfox-- please don't mention the Augusta Golf Club as a basis for the way Ideltech should behave. I know you guys don't want a treatise on constitutional law and I am trying to stay off of the moral high horse I unintentionally or unthinkingly keep riding around here. So as a summary:

The ability of a private clublike Augusta to restrict membership on the basis of race or gender has been a matter of litigation for years. But Ideltech is an employer, not a private club, and has to hire in accordance with laws forbiding discrimination.

There are lots of types of speech and the First Amendment doesn't mean you can say anything you want anytime or anyplace. As a practical matter at the present moment it means the government can not make content based regulations on political speech. Regulations known as "time, place and manner" restrictions that are reasonable for safety or other governmental reasons are ok.

A current example of this type of regulation being fought is the anti-war protests held in NY. The organizers wanted to protest in front of the UN. The government argued that for safety reasons they couldn't allow the protest to be held there. (remember that the threat of another terrorist attackhere is used as a justification--the gov't argued the police would not be able to guarantee there wouldn't be an attack on the UN ) A judge upheld that decision and the protest was held elsewhere in the city. Litigation continues.

Back to Augusta, my opinion is that the 20-day permit requirement would not withstand scrutiny should the protest organizers keep fighting it. Certainly not in federal court. And there are restrictions on how the sheriff can decide whether to grant a permit or not. I think that if the Augusta protest had been a political protest instead of against a private club, the
whole matter would have been different.

To be honest with you rose I was just making this up as I went along with the aid of Google. I know less than 0 about US consititustional law and was expected to get slaped down. My hope was to perhaps start a debate about the morality of companies like Ideltech.

Why don't you send your post as a letter to Melody at AM pointing out my ignorance on the subject? It's cool by me. Plus I'm sure Thad would approve even if we don't approve of Thad.

Did anyone, by any chance, save the video of Marcus? I wanted to check something on it. I've searched my hard drive for it and apparently I don't have it set to save temp files long enough.

EDIT: Oh ignore me. When I tried to go to the link I clicked from the summary in the guide (which I wrote), and now I know I had a bad link in there.

Do we have any idea who this message was meant for?
A. We the players who found Melody's research notes on MSN
B. Thad now that his cover has been blown at Ideltech
C. Alicia Church
D. Other

What are the other wav file Melody has?
A. The phone messages Elias (Thad) gave us
B. Recorded telephone calls between her and Marcus (though it was Marcus who made these recordings)
C. Something else

We know Melody goes to Church on a Sunday. But does she mean to say she goes to "A Church"?

Is there a link between Melody's bad poetry and the fact that Alicia likes to communicate through poetry?
