I guess that just goes to show how anxious one can get over a new ARG. Too bad, I was really hoping it was some sort of pre-game clue.

But seriously, don't think too much about the character thing. Apostrophes are a nightmare on the internet, as their character code in Unicode are special. So if your browser is reading the email and encoding it incorrectly, you will run into funny chinese or kanji characters. It's simply your browser trying to be too smart. I run into this all the time, especially if I visit a few chinese websites and the browser sorta goes into "chinese encoding" mode.

Bingo; the encoding is trout. It happens to me all the time when I'm bouncing from Japanese sites to English sites, or even sites that use different fonts. The browser tries to pick the correct language to encode by the first bits of the website it receives, and sometimes they pick wrong. Nothing more.

For a good, almost official explanation, try the link in my signature.

Glad to help Smile

problem is "smart quotes"...

Short answer: It doesn't mean anything. It's a glitch in the display routines because the ' character is not the standard ' byte value, but rather Microsoft's "Smart Quotes" byte value. That byte works in IE or Outlook when it is set to English "Windows" text encoding format, which is a non-standard variant of iso-8859-1. It doesn't work in other browsers/email readers and it doesn't even work in Internet Explorer when you set it to auto-detect Japanese.

__You dragged me over to a dead thread to tell me that?

Hi, sasando, and welcome here! You might want to hop over to the introductions thread to say "hi", since this rather old thread is not likely to get too much traffic Smile

On that note, I'm going to assume that the "secret message" subject has exhausted itself, so...

Locky!
