[META/LOCATION] London

I've seen little to no discussion about the importance of London on the boards. On the screen you link to when you click the Perplex City seal the fourth picture shows what looks like a banknote (or a check?) and the words "London for" Does anyone know what this thing is, or have theories of its importance?

[Edit - changed topic - Fi]

It is a banknote - a fifty pound note. I recognise it because I've very rarely owned one! Not sure about the significance of London, though I believe that the (majority) of the PMs are UK based, and its possibly being run from London...?

The name 'Taversen Square' leapt out at me, it reminded me, for no reason other than its sound, of 'Tavistock Square' in London. Made me wonder if this other world is a kind of parallel universe, with similar place names to our world?

So possibly Perplex City and London are alternate versions of each other?

Unless I am mistaken, we don't have enough information on the plot just yet to even come up with plausible speculation. Certainly I believe that there will be a connection to London in the future. Until then, I think that it is a wait and see.

Certainly intreguing...

Well, wait and see is really the only option, and plausible speculation may well be fruitless at this early stage. But wild and random speculation can still be entertaining! Very Happy

[WILD SPECULATION]

True... Smile

On that note, maybe it refers to where Arthur Dent was supposed to live. maybe the Pub where he finds out the world is about to end with Ford Prefect....

Maybe not.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Well Arthur lived in the west country, close to Taunton... couldn't resist either (as resistance is futile) Wink

I'll go to bed now.

Doh! Once again, my theory is shot down! Smile

In that case, I got nothing.

i like the idea of london being a parallel universe kind of thing in respect to perplex city (or vice versa). one thing i'd like to point out: it seems that zeller, taversen, noi et al. are respected scientists or thinkers in perplex city - why else would there names appear on the letterhead of the academy? also, the academy is located at "taversen square", which for me is another hint in that direction.

so, maybe we shouldn't look after similar sounding places, but places with names of people who play a similar role in london's (or great britain's (or europe's (or the world's))) intellectual development.
it's a far fetch right now (isn't most of what we spec at this time?) but i guess better than nothing Smile

Actually, between some epic downpours, I've been roaming London in my spare time seeing if that cityscape from the perplexcity page is anywhere I can identify.

So far, it isn't.

(Oh, and One Tavistock Square is the British Medical Journal's bookshop - yes, I already spotted the similarity in names - no, I don't think it's relevant).

Lyra's Oxford

I, too, like the idea of it being a parallel universe. It kinds of remind me of that book Lyra's Oxofrd (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0385606990/202-2392645-9425441) exept that Lyra's is a bit more hocus pocus.

Might be a reach, but isn't Adrian in the OX2?

Yeah I was thinking that too actually - like from His Dark Materials. Olde England, but modern.

Its a bit off the London topic, but it is more thoughts about the plot/setting...

Who is the letter to? Who is the one that blanked out the word in the letter? Who published the letter? Why did they publish it?

What is this Cube? We know that Sente was looking for The ____ Cube, but does it really belong to him? What is it? Is it some technological advancement? Religious relic? Mystical talisman?

Of course there are more, but those are the ones that are on my mind the most. What is everyone's thoughts on it?
