Catherwood I think you *are* right, or at least on the right lines...

Someone mentioned weather in the channels the other day, and I've been looking at the same kind of things, although I must confess hadn't come across such a comprehensive list as Caterpillars! I spent about an hour on the Met Office site yesterday, but just couldn't match anything perfectly.

I did come across this though, http://www.ukweather.freeserve.co.uk/metarpg.htm
which looks like perfect puzzle material to me!

I absolutely agree.....it is weather code related.

Just not sure what to do with it. Very Happy

Maybe search for the 20 cities that the weather fits to, and their first initials form the code answer?

Yeah, but methinks there's a lot of cities to choose from with similar weather.

Why does today's only have two lines?

Either there's more yet to come (suggesting the source information is time dependent)

or there are only 2 sets of data for today

Did today have half as much weather as previously?

I don't think so.

Well we know it's not about location.

Code:
Day 1

SI, LRS, LRS, SI, SD
SD, SI, LRS, LRS, SD
SD, SD, LRS, SD, SD
SD, WMLC, LRS, SD, SI

Day 2

HR, SI, SD, SD, LRS
LRS, LR, SI, SD, LR
SD, SD, RS, SD, TS
SD, SI, HR, LRS, SD

If it were about location, and these were 5 day forecasts for the same particular place(s) each day, we would see an advancement in the codes day by day. But Day 2 is completely different from Day 1 (even allowing for the unpredictability factor).....at least imo Very Happy

Soccer

I don't have the time right now to test my idea, but what if this was related to the euro cup?

Would explain why there are less entries now... and perhaps provide different places for the weather each day?

4 teams playing per day since the puzzle began, until yesterday.
Now it's only 2 teams playing per day.
Considering some countries have widely differing weather patterns (Italy? surely the weather at one end is different than the other).
So my guess would be the weather in the capital city of each country playing that day.

And to assist the theory, it appears sunny in Paris for the next 5 days, but mostly cloudy tomorrow in Athens.
And Lisbon is clear for the next 4 days.
But in London, for the next four days, today is clear, tomorrow is "light rainy", and the next 2 days are clear.

Congrats! There's no point pretending that that isn't the answer now, although I would have preferred it if you sent me it privately via PM instead of posting it here publicly. I'm not entirely sure who to give the GMail invitations to now though.

Incidentally, there were also some hints in the odd wording of the first post:

"To help pass the time until Project Syzygy kicks off, I had the capital idea of creating a little puzzle - totally unrelated to the game! - where three winners will each receive an invitation to Google's Gmail service. Weather or not everyone and their dog is already on Gmail is not something I know, but if you're not it's very useful, and if you are then you can pass it on to someone else. In any case the prize is not the main thing. "[/b]

I stand corrected. My data was from cnnsi.com, and they have an error, which I propagated. My apologies to the people of Holland, the team, and to anyone in their bracket that needed them to score 3 points in order to prevent Italy from advancing.
