[INFO] All info concerning AWARE can be found in the GUIDE

[Apart from the Guide (see below), there's also the Quick Reference Forum]

With Krystal out of the picture (for now, at least) and with her guide being under new (and unknown) management, I'm sure you are all aware that Bill has started a Wiki guide:

http://deaddrop.us/awareguide/

I thought I would start this thread so that (1) you don't have to dig through the thread for Krystal's guide to find the link to the Wiki guide, (2) it can be marked "sticky" (hello, moderators!) and always be at the top of the list, and (3) we can talk about the Wiki guide itself (help and questions regarding the guide's content and Wiki in general).

For those that are wondering, "what the heck is a Wiki?" Check out the entry about Wikis at Wikipedia.

I also edited the description of Krystal in the character-page a bit. I added her age (I knew I had that in my IRC logs somewhere Smile ) and I also added the fact that she mentioned she has a 12-year old daughter with xlaurenxcoolx as an AIM handle. I guess that probably has some significance, or else she wouldn't have mentioned it...

And now, if I may ask a few questions (mostly directed at Bill, I guess...):

There are a number of different types of Wiki software out there, all generally doing the same thing, but all slightly different. Often the tags differ (square brackets, double square brackets, curly braces, the format of the URL/link tag), but usually there is some kind of editing help page that lists the available tags. I cannot seem to find this for some reason. I would use the Javascript toolbar buttons, but they do not seem to work for me--plus, I'm the kind of person who would rather directly type tags than jump back and forth between the keyboard and mouse.

Second, most Wikis typically have a "sandbox" type of area and a "Getting Started" page. I would expect a bunch of people here to have never seen (or at the very least, never edited) a Wiki before. The sandbox makes a pretty good scratch-space for those playing around with editing for the first time and could be pretty useful for a lot of people. I was not able to find a link to it. Maybe it would be helpful to have a link to a these on the sidebar, footer, or front page of the Wiki? Or are they there, and I'm just completely blind to them?

If you need another moderator, I can help. I check the boards a few times a day and I know how to moderate a phpBB.

When you click on the link to edit a page, there is a row of icons. Each icon is labelled with bubble help as to what it does and if you click on it, it provides an example for you to cut and paste.

I used the same wiki code that powers http://wikipedia.org, so I'll see if they have something there I can link to. Knowing little about wiki myself, I grabbed it solely because it seemed stable and clearly scales well. Razz

That would be great Varin, thanks for the offer. If you're sure, please send Spacebass a personal message and ask him to make you a mod, as I can't make you one. Thanks!

Those seem to be nonfunctional for me, which was kind of why I was asking. Although, now that I know that it is the same dialect of Wiki as Wikipedia, I know where to start looking. Smile Thanks!

Current events

I need suggestions on how to set up the current events section. Right now there is just a bare boned thing that sort of sets out the main headings based on general news and then a section about what each character or group has done during the course of the day. ( I have the Prof/Grendel Support Group; the Mark/Marty/Jude/Ideltech Group; the Melody group; and a miscellaneous for other sites like amboy monthly.)

My thought is to have a one or two sentence update under each group heading which describes any contact that is posted at unfiction and a sentence that describes any changes or updates at any in-game websites.

Will this work? As we are still in pregame and, while alot seems to be happening, much of the information seems superficial at this point. So we can take the time to get the WIKI set up in a way that works for everyone.

Another question: do we link back here to unfiction or the in-game site or do we post updates to websites by quoting them in their entirety? And, what about entire changed pages, such as the professor's site, how shall we best preserve this stuff on the WIKI?

All suggestions, comments, etc. are welcome...

PS. Thanks Brian for all your posts. How do I substitute my name for the IP address as you have done? And, thanks again Bill for hosting this and setting it up.

When I copied the entries from Krystal's guide in, I tried to preserve the format. Would the "current events" section basically be the end of the "timeline" section? Should they be merged, or kept separate? Are they conceptually and functionally similar? I'm not sure what is best as far as how much work things end up being to maintain, or what's best as far as newbies trying to read what's going on.

It seems to me that linking back here is always safe. Things won't change (...much...), and a single heading with a few sentences of summary can point to a gigantic thread here. Also, message attachments can be pointed to (because you can't attach to the Wiki). As far as websites...I don't know. If you are just talking about a website generally ("bluelouboyle is Drexel's homepage"), then sure. If you are talking about a site at a specific instant in time...I don't know. Preserving is probably a good idea, but copying them into the Wiki seems like a pain. Maybe someone else has some suggestions?

There is a link/button in the top right corner for logging in or signing up. That'll let you create an account, log in, and create a little Wiki homepage.

A little help

Thanks for all your answers Brian. I have been working a little with the WIKI guide and I think we can make it a useful tool... It still needs work, so don't think it's in final form by any means.

But, listen, as my lack of programming skills of any and all kinds, is evident from my posts, if I can get the WIKI to work , for everyone else, it should be easy as pie Wink

Two more things:

When people start a new thread relating to factual matters here, would they just link it to the WIKI chronology page? which is found at http://deaddrop.us/awareguide/index.php/Chronology
just a date and a heading would be good.

I started writing short weekly summaries too. I need help with them as I miss stuff and as my interest in the characters tends to overwhelm the summaries. Anyone can do it

Argn email

Ack.. . Steve is emailing information about our guide to the world. I got this email from argn.com yesterday.

Quote:
AWARE is currently in a live pregame. If you'd like to jump in and get up to speed, a new Wiki Guide is being maintained by the players at http://deaddrop.us/awareguide/index.php/Main_Page. In addition, there is now an AWARE Forum set up at Unfiction, along with an IRC chat channel: #ruaware on chat-solutions.org. AWARE is picking up steam and looks to be a very innovative ARG, alreay having had an established player at Unfiction turn out to be an in-game character, or so it seems.

Ack again. I wasn't complaining about Steve doing his job by emailing the ARGN list people, I was panicking at the idea of people reading a guide that I had been, umm, well, shall we say, working on to the best of my ability. I usually feel the need to add a disclaimer to such materials for the good of the user, like the Surgeon General on cigarettes. You know something like : " I don't know anything about programming or computers, but..."

And, Bill is hosting the guide for us to use on his site, it's "our" players guide, the communist collective version, not "his" guide. Thanks again Bill dear.
