Beowulf is the hero in the great Anglo-Saxon peom 'Beowulf'... you may also recognize the main 'antagonist': Grendal.

eowulf is also a name given to a specific setup of machines running in a cluster, called a 'beowulf cluster' (oddly enough). Very common ways to get a system running many CPUs. You see them in universities around the world for physics or math or computer science or whatever tests.

Uhu, but then...

The site seems to mention a Beowulf-class computer

After a quick googlesearch ( Keywords: Beowulf Halo) I found this page

Lookie

No offence, I think it is a very interesting find. The likenessess to our game are most likely coincidental, though.

Beowulf is a very established name in parallel computing. It is not made up. The original paper outlining the Beowulf system is co-authored by the two persons behind theHive, and published at the 24th International Conference on Parallel Processing.

My guess is that the authors of theHive liked the hive terminology as much as our PMs.

I don't want to sound like a dick but this is very likely a red herring.

I didn't say it was made up, I just thought there was a possibilty that Bungie used the Beowulf idea in the whole Marathon/Halo story.

Last quote about the Halo Beowulf character

Quote:
Beowulf was the ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence) A.I. who screened the initial presentation of Covenant information to the Spartans.

Just a quick note if you check the blog it mentions that Dana was contacted by someone who called himself "xnbomb" I did a search on Google and found this link...

http://metacortechs.netninja.com/little-boxes/aim-11-15/

if you look down the list you will see a txt document of a AIM conversation with xnbomb.

IT appears he was a character from a Matrix style ARG.

also NetNinja.com is also responsible for posting the supposed clues for the riddles on ilovebees.com

Confused

Poor xnbomb; he's so good, he's become unreal. It's a good thing he's a member of UnFiction, then.

This was discussed already in a separate thread.

Sorry to disappoint, but xnbomb is really just a player like everyone else.

I kinda figured that. My question is what does he have to do with this particular game.

I will search the boards thanks for the info.

Yeah, I saw that bungie ref when I did the same thing. I think it's just a coincidence, but it is really odd.

I don't see any connection to Mappa Mundi though. According to the whois information for mundi.net, it was set up in 1998 and does appear to be a real website.

Well... technically the website is hosted on a server owned by hosting giant Rackspace (the kind of place that offers 500MB of storage for free when you sign up... also the kind of place that easily survives slashdotting). Rackspace has locations in a few places, one of which is London and the other is Virginia. My bet is that it is hosted at the VA location, hence the EST server clock.

Oh well, I guess the other option would have been hosting it at MS, at least it has the right Timezone... but I suppose they wouldn't want it to be that obvious a connection.
