Twing

I wrote Dana today to probe possible story/family connections, any Kafkaesque goings on, and why her email contains the word "twing."

Quote:

Hi, Dana. I'm one of the folks who's been helping you out over the
last few days (Marc, xnbomb, etc.). I just wanted to send you a note
to give my personal support. I know you're stressed about this whole
thing, and the crazy conspiracy theorists from slashdot can't be
helping. I agree with whoever recommended turning off your comments.
As you said, too much noise, not enough signal.

I am curious about a couple of things... Where did "twing" come from?
I assumed that was your last name until my collegues started getting
emails from Ms. Awbrey. Also, how are you and your Aunt doing, aside
from being concerned by the internet problems? Have you told your
mom? And, if I'm not getting too personal, is your dad in the
picture? Every little detail helps. I certainly don't want to find
out what happens when that counter hits zero. Hopefully, whatever
this thing is will continue to communicate through the hotmail
account.

I hope you have some stress-relief planned for the weekend! Have a
good one.

as for the family questions... I am going to ignore them, if you don't

It seems to me that she's the net holding things in place. When she goes to China, or something else happens to her, it's all going to fall out. Or, viewed from another angle, in order to release whatever needs releasing, she will have to be removed. Sucks to be her. Also, no luck finding out if anyone in the family is a widow. Maybe it's not important. I'll write back to her tomorrow, but now I've gotta run.

I'm sure this is utterly unrelated... but Larry Niven wrote a book entitled "The California Voodoo Game". It's funny the kind of coincidences you find when scouring the Internet...

I would think if the Niven quote does anything its make another reference to Halo. Since Niven most famous book is the Ringworld series and Halo is a ringworld.

Anyone correlate the 4 days being the Meltdown event held by microsoft, in which dana also makes reference to?

Everything I know about Halo, I learned today, but I did recall reading about him on the Cortana letters story page, which is why I thought it important. The voodoo connection isn't strong, but it's something. Do we have any other theories about the use of voodoo in the Operator's email? Has anyone read that book?

Dana talks about Meltdown? Where? Is it really the same day as the countdown? Is anyone going?

I emailed Dana earlier today about China-trip stuff, and this is the response I got back tonight:

hi Sara,
that's really sweet packing advice. you're totally right, I should
dig around for something comfy to take with me. I have a confession:
my absolute worst habit in the world is "accidentally" taking airline
blankets with me when I get off the plane. (I know, that's so
horrible!) I used to be afraid of flying, and now they're like little
survivor tokens for me.
so much to do before leaving next week! I know I said I'd leave the
site alone for a little while, but I'm toying with the idea of giving
it one more shot before the trip. Poor Aunt M.

Nothing about feeling sick or queasy or having a spinning head in this one, but I the line "I used to be afraid of flying, and now they're like little survivor tokens for me" struck me. We have the story of the shipwreck in Mayday, and the wreck had a survivor.

She also says she may give the site "one more shot". My guess is whatever she does is going to make it rather difficult for her to leave...

My response from Dana

Hi Mescad,
voice mail, aughhh.... amazing how many people who want to help also
seem to want to hang up without saying anything, lol.
the hardware tip is a good one. I'm heading out to Aunt M's on
Monday, probably, perhaps I'll give it one last check before China.

So she's implying that the server is at Aunt M's place. I dunno if that's new info or not, but it's somethinig. :) Still no reply from the hotmail address.

Hmmmm... This wouldn't be possible. ilovebees.com's IP block is owned by Rackspace a very well known, reliable (and expensive) provider of dedicated servers.

"Rackspace Managed Hosting owns and operates four Tier-1 data centers located in Texas, Virginia and London, England. Each data center is engineered to the highest levels, with extensive systems to address security and network redundancy, enabling Rackspace to offer our 100% infrastructure availability guarantee."

Here's the netcraft report on the server. It's definantly not located at aunt margret's house. Now if rackspace had a datacenter in san fransisco this might be believable (as some dedicated/colocation hosting companies do allow you to visit the data center to make modifications to your server. Though I'm pretty sure rackspace does not allow this)

In the game-world though, who's to say that the server /isn't/ hosted at Aunt M's house? Very Happy

Sorry, no cunning formatting, it's far too late. Just thought I'd throw in my recent comms with Dana. Any feedback much appreciated.

hi hotblack,
yup, still going to China (and a few other countries... Japan,
Malaysia, Singapore...). I am worried, though, about going so far
away while Aunt M still has to deal with this... I take it you've been
over there? any recommendations?
your communication ideas are interesting... I may poke at the server
myself a little bit before I leave the country, one last try. will
keep you updated if I get any responses

Interesting that having one last try at something is still mentioned. Maybe this last try will cause (or appear to) the next stage in communcation... in three days. A new server, a new script, a new dawn....

Yes, as hotblack said, when she tries before she leaves, this may be the next step, the next update on the site.

I sent Dana an email, just as a test to see if I get a reply.
