Original text bolded

This medium is classified, and has a
STRONG INTRUSIVE INCLINATION.
- The medium (strange choice of words; a medium is usually the materials used to do something.. the internet?) is classified, and displays a strong tendency to invade other things.. probably servers/systems, since Dana's website has exploded.

sean stewart (seanstewart.org) says, regarding "the beast", that "The internet supplied the medium--a place where you could deliver a ton of content, and be assured that players would talk about it with one another..." so i think it's likely that the internet is in fact the medium to which the text refers.

It's also used in UNIX as "run this command in an external shell", used for doing stuff from the prompt when you're inside another program.

I know my way around unix fairly well, and I'm not aware of any such use of the !. I am however aware of it being used with the command history. Reference
However I don't think that's what's being done here.

I like AntraX101 believe that it is most likely the command interpreter path.

However another use of the ! before a command that keeps sticking in my head has to do with IRC bots. Eggdrops have pretty much always used the "!" trigger to prefix a command so that the bot knows that it is a command and not just another line of chat.
Going along with the irc theory, the ! trigger is also used for IRC drones. Which are trojan infected computers, the trojan connects to a specified IRC server and channel, and waits for commands from the botmaster. I've seen some channels that have litterally thousands of infected computers just waiting for commands (I used to be an IRC Operator). You may ask "So what good are thousands of drones?" Well those drones are usually on broadband connections. Well the botmaster can tell the drones to send as many requests to a specific server as it possibly can. Well that's no big deal for most servers if say 5 or 10 broadband connections do this. However imagine that their are litterally thousands of broadband connections sending the same request to the same server as quickly as they possibly can. A single server can't possibly handle that load. This is known as a Distributed Denial of Service attack because it effectively ties up a server so that legitimate connections to it are effectively denied.
It's a lengthy read but explains irc drones and their use with dDoS attacks very well.

While I'm not at all saying that this is an IRC drone, I'm using that as a possible way of explaining the "!". Like I said earlier, ! is used on irc as a way that a bot can distinguish a command from normal chat. So maybe the ! is placed on the website as a way to signify a command.

Code:
!attach
act | drop recurse

The very interesting thing here is typically when you have a dDoS attack the bot connects to the server (attaches itself) it makes a request (or takes an action) and then it (typically but not always) drops the connection before the server even has a chance to respond that way it's capable of sending another request without having to wait for a reply. It would do this repeatedly (or recursively).

Right now it may be doing this at a rather slow rate.
But...
In 3 days, network throttling will erode.
If the throttle is gone it will be doing this as quickly as it possibly can.

Like I said it's most likely just a command interpreter path. But I wanted to throw out another theory that might be of use.

Also one other thing related to unix that I haven't seen mentioned:
Code:
act | drop recurse

The "|" shown here is called a pipe. It is used on a unix command line to send the output from the first command (in this case act) to the second command.

A side note...

! is used in Unix and other command lines to execute a command while actively in another process. For example, I can use 'more' to start reading a file, and then use '!ls' to list the directory without exiting the reading of the file. When it finishes showing the directory list, it bounces right back to the document I was viewing.

Alternatively, it could be the system/shell prompt for all we do know... Either way, it definitely indicates which are commands and which are responses.

Aug 24

August 24th has a halo tie in before this whole thing. It was that day before Keyes and Cortana took control of the Pillar of Autumn, the human ship in the game. Hmm.

XNbomb - I think you've cracked it.

It was a beautiful piece of lateral thinking. I don't think any of us mere mortals could have come up with it....

So, here's what I think. That story is simply what The Operator/Queen/AI/whatever has witnessed, filtered through its own conciousness and presented as prose, much like the other text it has left on the site.

SPDR is perhaps an autonomous repair routine, trying to fix The Operator and return it to full conciousness once more. Once that happens? Nobody knows, but it should be creepy. And fun Twisted Evil

SPDR isn't sentient, I don't think. Just a complex set of automated instructions with three clearly defined subroutines (the 'tools').

The warning on the front page seems like it's been set up by SPDR.

Also, until recently, The Operator has percieved SPDR as a semi-malevolent entity, only just returning to a state of awareness high enough to realise that 'the spider' has been healing it.

That sound about right, people?

Well, I'm reminded strongly of Durandal in the way that it speaks. Very prosaic, high on metaphors and quoting famous poets.

Who knows? Maybe Durandal found a way to escape the end of the universe.

does to me. so if in fact the ruined castle is the ship, and the spider is the widow, her subroutines are the tools, and the queen is the AI, hell might be a firewall and the manticore a security program altered by the intruders to not let anybody at all pass, not even the widow who knew him (his old access code) am I making any sense? does it sound as unimportant to anyone else? I wouldn't know how this story is helping us at the moment... can't wait for tuesday.

Hmmm.... a widow who is a spider? That wouldn't make her a black widow spider, would it?

A good idea not to tick her off, then...
