[SPEC] Chinatime in index.html source I looked at the source code of the main index site and found this:
This medium is classified, and has a<BR>
STRONG INTRUSIVE INCLINATION. <BR><BR>In 3 days, network throttling will erode.<BR><BR>In 17 days this medium will metastasize. <BR><BR>
COUNTDOWN TO WIDE AWAKE AND PHYSICAL:
<font CLASS=TITLE_WHITE>
<DIV id="counter"></DIV>
</font><SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript1.2">
var chinatime = new Date(2004,7,24,6,7,0);
</SCRIPT>
<script language=Javascript1.2 src="countdowntochina.js"></script><BR>
Make your decisions accordingly.<BR><BR></font></div>
Now, for the coding disinclined, the basic idea is that the date is put through a javascript function that spits out the amount of time remaining until that date. The interesting fact comes from the name, 'chinatime', and the date, 'Aug 24, 2004, 6:07:00' (this is military time by the way, so it's 6 am on 8/24 and for the Date function, 0 is january and thus 7 is august).
Ok, also I looked at the countdowntochina.js code ( www.ilovebees.com/countdowntochina.js ) and it looks like it is messing with the time given and some kind of timeout. As far as I can tell... this function reruns itself every 0.099 seconds... a simple countdown function really. Also seen in the source is reference to a counter... which (assuming you use internet explorer instead of mozilla) you see in the "COUNTDOWN TO WIDE AWAKE AND PHYSICAL" part of the 'black box'.
All in all, the big question is why call it 'countdowntochina' and the variable 'chinatime'... It is definitely worth looking into and investigating further. I'm going to (once my blasted email is up) email our friend Dana asking her to 'remove' that javascript file from the website... I don't think she will, but it should be a nice conversation.
As a side note... I copied the index and countdown code to my computer and messed around with it. If a date is added in that is before today... then it screws up and shows negatives. This indicates that they aren't leaving this up forever (it would have a little catch to show zeros instead of counting into the negatives if they did want that). Also, if you take the local javascript file and remove the // from the 'alert(targetDate);' line, it'll show you the 8/24 date... BE WARE, you also need to remove the TimeOut function at the end (or comment it out with //) or you'll have that warning box pop up over and over... and then you would need to be really fast to close the browser before the alert pops up again.
Anyway, I hope this leads somewhere!

I'm an idiot I just remember the Entire freakin' "I am going to china in august" stuff that Dana talks about. That is an interesting connection though... I don't think we can fully trust Dana anymore...

Dana had mentioned that she had coded her own timer to countdown to the time she was leaving for China, and that the timer was hijacked by this AI or something similar.

True, I recall seeing that... but why would it have been set to 2 days before she says she is leaving (unless, of course, you want to argue that the AI or whatever changed the date as well)... and why would the AI even care about something so close to her leaving time anyway? Just something to ponder.

This smells trouty. Dana said that she put the counter up for her China trip and that it had be repurposed. She also said that she tried deleting it and it came back.
Well, she did. I tried to link to the permalinks, but they're not coming up for me. It's in there, I promise!

Well, the deeper parsing of the timer is not trouty; nor is the spec that maybe we shouldn't trust Dana - nothing is set in stone. So I'd hold on to the fish for now..

The spec on this is that the counter was re-purposed by the intruder. The original date used in the china countdown (7/29/04, 8:25 am) was changed to 8/24/04, 6:07 am. This section of console log taken from ilovebees seems to back that up:
Code:
net:
!attach
act | store recurse
!capture
chatter protocol ancestor packet
!analyze
time 2004,6,29,8,25,0
!put
time 2004,7,24,6,7,0
!put
warn
Check out this thread , and specifically sapagoo's post, for a more indepth analysis of this.

Ah... I assumed when Dana said the 29th, that she meant the 29th of august. My mistake... guess that answers that, thanks guys.

[TROUT] When do we roll over? Hello,
I'll admit, I am totally new to ARG's. The two Slashdot articles were my rabbit hole. Since I am witnessing my first ARG, I am just going to lurch this one out for the most part.
I just want to say I respect you guys and what you're all about. I appreciate the organization and cooperation.
Now for the trouting, when is the timer expected to roll over to "0 days" for the Network Throttling to Occur if I am in EST?
I am sure this may have been covered, I have tried figuring it our but am stumped by the code. I promise that I looked through these forums for the answer to my questionbefore I posted this. I just couldn't find it.
Thank you.
