Being a fan of THE ANDROMEDA STRAIn and ShadowRun, I have a couple names to put forth:

Project WILDFIRE

ECHO MIRAGE v2.0

Let's at least agree that any prospective name can be, ya know, relevent to the game at hand. Thanks.

Let's analyze the two choices I presented (both of which are relevant):

1) Project WILDFIRE

In Michael Crichton's book THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, Project WILDFIRE was designed to contain unidentified, high-risk pathogens (such as the fictional Andromeda Strain and the all-too-real Ebola, Marburg, or any of a hundred other highly dangerous diseases unknown at the time) and develop ways to neutralize them.

Now consider the problem posed by the I Love Bees site: A system that appears to be under attack by hostile programs (such as worms and/or virii) intent on gaining access to a damaged program that has taken refuge there.

I suspect that part of the problem we are faced with is assisting the damaged program in its defence and analysis of its attackers - as Michael Crichton's Project WILDFIRE did witht he Andromeda Strain in the aforementioned book.

2) ECHO MIRAGE v2.0

In the history of the ShadowRun world, ECHO MIRAGE was an elite group of hackers and crackers enlisted by the U.S. government around 2025. They first saw action in 2029, against a computer virus of unknown origin and unprecedented destructive power.

Of the thirty-two members of ECHO MIRAGE who engaged the virus (using recently developed cybertechnology that allowed direct brain-to-computer links a la THE MATRIX), four died in the first eighteen minutes from lethal biofeedback induced by the virus.

ECHO MIRAGE 2.0 would be an apt name for the group as well - even though none of us is hacking or cracking anything (at least, I hope nobody is!) we still have a system that appears to be under attack by a worm/virus (or set of worms/virii), and I suspect one of our tasks will be to disable the attacker(s).

First of all, let me point out that virii isn't a word. The word you want to use there is "viruses".

Now, on topic:
The names you're putting out are, well, already used... plus I kinda like beekeepers. Somebody should make a poll.

My vote is also for beekeepers... even if the trail goes elsewhere, only we will know how it all began... with ILB. Anyway, this has already been used before. Even I have called our group beekeepers without even realizing it. It just feels right. But back to the clues.

I've actually seen both used - 'virii' and 'viruses'. 'Virii', as I recall, is the Latin pluralization of 'virus', whereas 'viruses' is the English variant.

But back on topic - yes, I know they've been used before. So has Macavity (by T. S. Eliot and Andrew Lloyd Webber). Is there any universal law that says "Thou shalt not use a name that has been used before"?

Virii vs. Viruses has been done to death. No one can win that argument. Smile

I personaly prefer "beekeepers" myself. Short, and to the point.

Mac, did you click the link I gave?

http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Virus+(plural)

At no point did I claim the word Virus was not latin.

I actually used a rule for latin to PROVE that Virii is incorrect.
(the -i suffix is only used for words than end in -ius)

This is wildly off topic.

Edit:

No. No. No. No. No!

"In Latin, viri is not the correct plural. The ending -i is used only for masculine nouns, not neuter ones such as virus; moreover, viri is the plural of vir, and means "men""

"There is some debate about what the rules of Latin grammar might imply about the formation of a plural. In Latin virus is generally regarded to be a neuter of the second declension, a form so rare that there are no recorded plurals, and so there is no classical rule for forming its plural. Possibilities include "virus" (in analog with 4th declension) and "vira" (in analog with 3rd declension)."

Click on this:
http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Virus+(plural)

Another edit:

No.

Octopus is of greek origin, not latin, so the correct plural is actually "octopodes."

Weirdly enough, this is only the case when you are talking of plural SPECIES of octupus (such as the rare instances where "peoples" is actually correct).

In all other cases, it would be "octopuses."

Please stay on topic in this thread. Feel free to start a Virii/Viruses discussion in Various & Sundry.

Not that it matters who's right and who's wrong, but I still prefer Project WILDFIRE and ECHO MIRAGE myself - granted, 'Beekeepers' is a good topical reference to the I Love Bees website, but the problem's not witht he bees themselves.

The problem's with the system it (and whatever is generating those messages) is residing on, and what appears to be an attack on that system, using hostile code.

Perhaps Project APIAN WILDFIRE or WILD BEE?

I think we've mostly agreed on beekeepers at one level or another.

Don't put effort into naming the group, if a good one (like the one we're currently using) comes up, it'll be accepted.

I mean, you're free to call the group "DogPoo Alfredo" if you want, but I think most of us call ourselves "beekeepers".

Just because the bees may have little to do with any resulting activity in this game/project/promotion, doesn't mean beekeepers isn't a fine and dandy name.

(this is one thread of many that makes me wish fervently for an update. Smile )

Cloudmaker was an AI boat that never truly figured into about 99% of the action of the Beast. Jawbreakers were players riffing off a code name of Lockjaw, said name having nothing at all to do with the game.

Doodelee doo. Anyone want some nachos?
