All of halo is largely influenced by sci-fi writers. Such as ringworld. Also, in the 'The Flood' of halo is very close to 'pink goo'

It also appears they are influenced by old literature....Gulliver's Travels, The Tempest, The Metamorphosis.

idle spec

I'm getting the feeling that we're not as far along as the story suggests, comparing with the message on the main page
"HALT - MODULE CORE HEMORRHAGE

Control has been yielded to the
SYSTEM PERIL DISTRIBUTED REFLEX.

This medium is classified, and has a
STRONG INTRUSIVE INCLINATION.

In 2 days, network throttling will erode.

In 16 days this medium will metastasize.

COUNTDOWN TO WIDE AWAKE AND PHYSICAL:
30:02:46:27:537

Make your decisions accordingly."

I think that in 16 day s we will be seeing the stitching together phase of the story being acted out by SPDR, in two days perhaps it may start its actions... meaning the story is a warning ahead of time that this will be happening and to stay away. A preprogrammed method of transmitting that possibly is damaged.,

before seeing the countdown on the UvA website, i was going to post a slightly more refined version of my theory. but at that time i was under the impression that spreading would happen in 16 days.

i'm all out of ideas, guys

Please post your theories anyway, because we can't be certain that either the UvA or fridgeowl sites ar "in-game" at this moment...

alrighty then.

and actually, after reading the source code on the UvA site, i am inclined to agree with both sites not being in-game. i have decided its probably a little prank being pulled by members of the science faculty at that university (i mean, how convenient would it be for SPDR to invade the AI section of the site?). there is none of the embedded text, and the ilovebees URL is present. a bit fishy, if you ask me.

the fridgeowl one is more than likely a hoax, for the reasons given in the UvA thread.

so, without further ado, my ideas (full of rampant speculation), in a matured state:

in two days, the network SPiDeR is on will crash, due to network throttling erosion. i think this means ilovebees will cease to exist. get all the info you can out of it, ladies. i'd hate to be right and nobody have saved copies of the webpages (i have, but i can't find anything new. others might have more luck).

in sixteen days, the 'medium' (SPiDeR itself) will spread to other websites (not UvA and fridgeowl, i think those are out-of-game). i have no idea what the consquences of this might be. more of the story revealed, possibly...?

in tweny-nine days, the SDPR will invade (at least, in-game) every PC connected to the internet, the way terminator's SkyNet did.

clearly, this is not desirable. i think the aim of the game is to stop it from happening.

now all we need is arnie to help us fight off robert patrick

Nicely done. I doubt that the entire current internet could supply the SPDR/Widow with what it needs. Problems, naturally, would ensue.

There's another possibility though. Right now the SPDR/Widow is repairing the Operator's brain using very Dr. Frankensteinish methods... but there may be physical repairs necessary too. If so, what's to stop the SPDR/Widow from cobbling together a body for itself to go effect those repairs?

Ya know, grabbing an archive of the site (and any more that come) wouldn't be a bad idea.

a slight tweak to roddy's theory

Hey Roddy, I like your theories but I have a slightly different interpretation of one piece:

in two days, the network SPiDeR is on will crash, due to network throttling erosion.

I don't take that to mean that the ilovebees.com website will crash. If you parse the text differently, you could interpret this way:
In 2 days, network throttling will erode.

I take this to mean that SPDR is in a limited, throttled, state... and that in two days SPDR will become less restricted, and start spreading in the ways outlined by your theories. whadaya think?

I don't think that it will start massively spreading in two days. It will not metastasise... ie spread throughout the body (of the network) in a way which could be virtually unstoppable, for another 16 days.
That said some restriction upon itself may well dissapear in two days..It will take SPDR another two days to properly work out how to remove/erode the network throttling.. this is what it has been working on recently. With these network restrictions removed, the stage will be set for the expansion and spreading of SPDR two weeks later, but it could also give us more access. It will have more access to resources but so will we!

Hopefully once it breaks through it will be able to speak to us in a more coherent manner Razz

First lesson (or one of them) from the Beast - make copies! archive! you never know when something will go away (get eaten) and yet you need to know what it looked like before.....

Not that everybody needs to, but think about taking on responsibility for keeping track of particular sites or the blog.

I keep seeing people reference the "medium" as being the SPDR... Well, I work in a laboratory and we grow our bacteriological samples on what we call "media", or "medium"...

So, my Spec on all of this is that the "medium" is the ilovebees website and that the metastasizing (sp?) will be the spreading to another website....

(sorry if this is trout, but this is my first post.... this whole thing has sucked me in like a crack-fiend)...
