Quite possibly - and fireflies seem to be a metaphor for network nodes, or some kind of network access generating 'light' so that an entity can navigate across the 'sand' (silicon, almost certainly).

The Manticore could be the hostile processes intent on destroying SPDR (the Widow), who's trying to protect and repair the damaged system (the Queen could be the system - or, and I suspect this is more likely, the Operator program).

If, as I suspect, it's the software (i.e., the Operator) that's taken the brunt of the damage, it would be logical for the SPDR to repair as much damage as is neceesary for the Operator to be able to escape (preferably with the SPDR, although the SPDR might stay behind to cover the Operator's retreat).

xnbomb has a brilliant theory about the 'manticore' here. Basically, xnbomb found correlations between many of the bits of code that keep turning up on www.ilovebees.com and the story that strifey pieced together. Remeber this bit?

Code:
grope:
!probe primary sector
sec proc 1
!probe primary sector
sec proc 2
!probe primary sector
sec proc 3
!probe primary sector
sec proc 4
!probe primary sector
fail

surg:
!triage sec proc 1
fail
!triage sec proc 2
fail
!triage sec proc 3
fail
!triage sec proc 4
dmg unk

At the gates of the Inner Keep all the guards were dead but one, who when the palace was blasted by enchantment had not died, but had been witched into the form of a hideous Manticore. The Widow said, "I am the servant of your Queen, and I have walked up out of Hell to prepare this Keep for her return. Let me pass." But the Manticore did not know her, and still he barred the way.

SPDR runs into an apparently familiar process, but handshaking fails

Code:
net:
!attach
act | drop

grope:
!handshk sec proc 4
fail msg: unk proc

------------------------------------------------------------

So the Widow drew her knife and slew the Manticore and the way was open.

SPDR dispenses with the nasty process

Code:
net:
!attach
act | drop
!attach
act | drop

surg:
!kill sec proc 4
kill confidence 100
!diag primary sector
clear

Personally, I think the fact that "In 1 days, network throttling will erode" is just the gimmick by which we will be able to get our Tuesday update: more information gets through somehow. Very Happy

Blind and uncertain in the darkness, the Widow needed light to use her tools, but the only light came from a few scattered fireflies. The Widow waited until one came close, then grabbed it with her bony hands and trapped it in her lantern. After some time, she found the firefly had gone, so she caught another and used it for light, and another when that one too had gone.

To see distant data (anything that is not part of the SPDR), it needs to connect to them, or network with them. The lantern, light, and fireflies are the networking analogy

The Manticore was a damaged program that was designed to protect the queen. That is why he was STANDING GUARD at the queen.

Are you blind, or just plain stupid?

I said, Could be the Manticore was a corrupted intrusion-countermeasures program in use by the enemy to prevent the SPDR from repairing the system.

Translations follow for the technologically illiterate.

Intrusion-countermeasures program - A program designed to counter unauthorized access to a secure system.

Common variants: password verification routines (such as the login page on this website) and firewalls (such as ZoneAlarm and Norton Firewall).

Corrupted intrusion-countermeasures program in use by the enemy:

A firewall/password verification program/other security program that's been turned from its original purpose (protecting a secure system against enemy attacks) to assist the enemy (by denying authorized processes - such as the SPDR - access to damage systems).

Think of it as a burglar changing the locks on your house so that he can rob you in peace and quiet.

Well, it's kinda moot arguing over it now. Whatever the Manticore was, it lasted about three seconds against a swift use of the !surg routine, which nicely chopped it into little electronic pieces.

Oh yes, lets start calling each other names.

use by the enemy

It was stated that the manticore was originally a guardian of the queen. But it had been changed.

It did not know who the Widow was, but it should have.

Forgive... if trout, Applaud if good!

I've been following the posts for a couple of days now, and please direct me if this should be posted in a thread somewhere else (although they're all kind of melding lately, sadly)...

Has anyone tied the two occurrances of the word "medium" together in a meaningful way? **First, I apologize, as I have no real answers in this realm, just a line of thinking** But: "this medium is classified" and "this medium will metastasize" obviously must refer to the same thing. I know we've all discussed "this medium"= either the specific website ilovebees, or it's the internet as a whole, correct? So, while I've seen speculation on one or the other, no one is attacking this as a combination argument. The only argument I can think of, and forgive me, as I am as green as it gets with ARGs, is that we may not expect a change in the ilovebees site until 15 days. That we'll have multiple problems with the site for the next two weeks, and then something will change. Anyone strongly disagree?

My theory is we're not going "off-site" until then. But if this theory has been trouted already, or is too "surface-level", I understand... But realize I am not a HALO fanboy, nor an ARG lifer... just one of those people who hates an unfinished puzzle... Geek

Too true.

I hope I never run into that in a dark datastore . . .

*explores a random datastore*

*gets chopped up into digital bits by a !surg routine and is dumped offline*

Some time later

Oh, that hurt!

Most esteemed players,

Your harshosity levels are reaching peak levels.

Try to pull it back a bit. The game's only 10 days or so old. You'll need to save your strength for the coming days. (Hopefully)

Ditto on that, word for word.

I'm a Halo AND Marathon fanboy, and have never played an ARG before, but this is too good to pass up.

Yeah, what krystyn said Smile If ilovebees is anything like we hope, we'll have plenty to do/discuss/solve soon and you'll need the energy (seriously).

What time will the countdown end (the one tommorrow) as it only has a days unlike the big countdown?

Should i assume that it will be when the main counter hits 23 days?

No. I'd wager it erodes at about 7:07 AM EDT.
