Something strikes me as odd in the latest letter from Ron to kona; specifically, this paragraph:

Quote:
It's funny you ask about encryption, over and above the encrypted file from the disc I found. I actually have a fascination with puzzles of all types and have even tried to use some of that in my various web design projects. But I really don't have time to go into that now. I have to get out of here soon. Brooklyn isn't somewhere you want to be wandering around too late at night, if you know what I mean.

[SPEC]He mentions that he's tried to use some puzzles in his various web design projects. While that could be referring to the upcoming UrbanHunt website change, he also could mean the webpage he created with the link to the webmaster tools. Another thing that gave me the idea is that he writes the awkward (at least to me) phrase "over and above the encrypted file from the disc I found." On that page, all the text is literally "over and above the encrypted file"[/SPEC]

Thoughts?

nice spec with a strong logic imo. i think it's worth us looking closely at that page just in case ... but where to start?

Here is the source code:

The breaks seem weird, but HITIBM is the first letter of each part after the <br> and that doesn't mean anything to me.

Actually, there are other breaks than that in the source. At first I thought it was just word wrapping, but it's actually the way it was sent:

The first letters of that are: HIdtaiBomi. I tried looking for anagrams, but didn't find anything conclusive (or really even close). I do kind of suck at anagrams, though...

And why title the page "Ron Daubert Test Page"?

This line is really weird in his latest email to Kona.

If you recall, in her letter she encrypted dreadhouse. com in a paragraph.

Maybe he returned the favor in his email back to her? He mentioned how he loved puzzles himself.

While trying to figure out the password for the "Webmaster Tools" I think it might be good (at least to me) to list the possibilities of where the password could be found. Take most of this with a fair amount of SPEC

To figure this out, we need to make one of two assumptions: Either Ron knows the password, or he doesn't.

If Ron Knows the Password:
If somehow Ron figured out the password, we can assume:
  • He doesn't want his employers to know (he would have admited in the email to kona if he didn't care).
  • He does want Kona (et. al.) to have the contents (or he wouldn't have made the file public)
This would suggest that he would include some way of figuring out the password. If he knows/suspects his employers are reading his email, he would probably be wary of hiding it in an obvious way (i.e: First letter of each sentence) as they have probably caught on by now.

Personally, my money is on the website that he posted the file, although, again, I'd say it's probably hidden in non-trivial way (The fact that plenty of us have been working on it to no avail also back up theory). Also, I have posted here my thoughts on why the password is hidden there.

One other thing. If Ron doesn't want his employer to know that he opened the file, it would suggest:
  • There is something bad (at least to TT) on that disk
  • He is afraid of losing his job (at the mild end) or his life (at the worst case scenario). His comment of "Brooklyn isn't somewhere you want to be wandering around too late at night, if you know what I mean." also hints at him being somewhat afraid
If Ron Doesn't Know the Password:
The other possibility, however, is that Ron really doesn't know the password. If that is the case, we have to focus more on Ed.

[WILD SPEC]
My thoughts are that Ed had something he wanted out, but had no way of getting it out of the building. My guess is he was watched like a hawk at the end of his tenure at TT, so the only chance he had was to put the files on a CD labels "Website Tools" and hope that the new Webmaster would release the files to the public in order to unlock the encrypted files.

This would lend credibility to Ed leaving some way to find the password in another way. For example, if Ed was the "inside man" who sent the package to jc, Ed could have used the same password inferred to on the memo, for his files. Another possibility is that the password is hidden somewhere on the TT or UH websites.
[/WILD SPEC]

Feel free to trout me if something is wrong/confusing. This is just how I see the possibilities from the information thus far.

I think the password for the file is in the words on the test page.

That is a "I agree" post Chris!

Good post btw!

Excellent post, Chris. I think both avenues of speculation are extremely plausible, and this is the best argument yet that I have heard for why the password for these files would be in the memo. I still don't think the files in the memo are the same as the webmaster tools. However, I hadn't thought of the fact that Ed could have reused the memo password for these files too, knowing that jc possessed the memo...

Well after bring 'wrong' about the password. I'll continue to throw ideas out there.

Anyway, with the lack of the promised updates from Ron, and no emails to any of his regulars, I worry that dear Ron is having some type of work problems.

Should we try to contact him another way?

Maybe those who have gotten steady emails could try again?

We are all part of the SPEC on any puzzle and never ever be afraid to "throw something out" - look at how many times I was wrong as well.

He has always taken 3 to 5 days to respond to my emails. I'm not super worried yet - but maybe someone can call TT and see if he still has a voice mail? If he was fired or something happened to him, I would think the "receptionist" would know he wasn't there anymore. Good SPEC!
(and a scary thought).

Ok I called and spoke to the receptionist.

Of course, his phone was busy. When she tried to direct me to his voice mail, it was having a problem, so she took my number and information and a message and said she would gave him call me.

I might should have asked if she had actually 'SEEN' him today.

My message was basically I had a web related question. I was just going to tell him I was a friend of Heather's, and was helping her with her site.

His voice mail was having a problem? Oh dear, I do worry that something has happened to poor Ron.

Crying or Very sad Well, hopefully it's just something benign like he was fired. Then we can still recruit him to our side. I hope *gulp* he didn't end up dead because of our emails.

Woohoo! He's alive! Although it seems that he's had a change of tone. I don't know if it's because of something I said or if it's because someone is watching his email converstations. Or maybe there's a puzzle in here? hehe, or maybe I'm just paranoid Very Happy

I sent...

Quote:
Hi Ron!

How's things? I'm glad to hear that the response to Urban Hunt has
been good so far. I'm so excited! I was watching the Urban Hunt
website for an update - I guess everything didn't go as planned? Hope
that doesn't mean you had to stay late again tonite. Sad

I didn't have much to do today (except for my little bee problem, darn
pests are taking over my yard, I swear) - so I decided to clean out
and organize my email inbox. I don't know if you have a gmail account
yet or not, but you can label emails and organized them quite nicely.
Anyway, I noticed something strange about the first email I received
from urban hunt. Do you have a personal email address? One that's
not through work, I mean? (if you don't, I could always invite you to
gmail) I found something buggy and strange with the auto response
email. I know you said you were a bit worried about your bosses
watching you closely so I don't want to get you in trouble or
anything. It's sorta related to those webmaster tools you told me
about. I figured out the password. Have you been able to crack it
yet? Not much useful in there if you already know *everything* about
the Urban Hunt and Tomorrow's Talk site, but it might be something you
want to look at.

Hope all is well Smile

Varin

And he responded...

Quote:
Varin:

I was very busy today. Maybe this weekend I'll have more time to talk.

Urban Hunt's update was delayed slightly while the bosses review what
has been done. Supposedly they might approve it to be posted tomorrow.
Things are going well overall with the show though. We had an
overwhelming response to the Contestant and Online Advisor search.
Applications for advisors are still being accepted. The casting
department has started narrowing down the possible contestants too.

Currently, I am working on a new page for Your Money or Your Wife.
Have you seen the promotional page for that show yet? We are starting
to get a lot of attention for that show too. How do you think that show
will do when it airs?

As far as I know, we expect it to be a big success. Tomorrow's Talk
could use a breakthrough show. It may put us on the national map. Some
of the executives are already patting themselves on the back for it.
After it hits the airwaves, we'll see if they are still celebrating.

You never know.

Ron
