[TRIVIA] Titles of Mysteries that Margaret reads...

No idea if this will prove helpful or merely interesting, but...

On her "About Me" page, Margaret lists the following myster novel series, whose books' titles are as follows:

Precious Ramotswe Series (by Alexander McCall Smith):
"The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" (first in series)
"Tears of the Giraffe" (second)
"Mortality for Beautiful Girls" (third)
"The Kalahari Typing School for Men" (fourth)

The Chronicles of Brother Cadafael (by Ellis Peters):
A Morbid Taste for Bones (first in series)
One Corpse Too Many (2nd)
Monk's Hood (3rd)
An Excellent Mystery (11th)
The Hermit of Eyton's Forest (14th)
The Heretic's Apprentice (16th)
The Potter's Field (17th)
Summer of the Danes (18th)
The Holy Thief (19th)

There's a number of others by Peters, but Amazon.com's listing didn't provide them in any particular order... and unless this info appears important, I'm not going to take the time to research this further!

BTW, thanks to the ARG monitors for the welcome and instructions! FYI, this ARG forum has been mentioned in a forum thread on halo.bungie.org.

Question answer

Old marathoner/halo player, but I can shed some light on the Cadfile stuff. You guys have got a neat little forum here, I hope I used the labels correctly.

The Brother Cadfile books are some mystery novels about a medieval english monk who solves murders and other cases. They were written in some sort of order, that might be what it meant there. PBS (at least here in North Carolina) used to show some TV versions during a weekly mystery show. Other subjects for the show were Hercule Poirot (sp?, he's belgian), an occasional Sherlock Holmes, and some other modern cop dramas. Most of the shows were originally british.

All I know about the Precious Ramostwe Series is what i got from amazon.com. Apparently a "fat, jolly old lady" has set up a detective agency in Botswana. The book has some similarities to the Mrs. Marple detective series.

It looks like Margaret likes detective stories.

I can help with the Cadfael series; I have a little less than half of them on my bookshelf. They're quite good.

Brother Cadfael is a monk in the Bennedictine abbey of Shrewsbury in 12c England, during the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Maud. He started out as a Welsh tradesman but became a sailor and soldier in the Crusades. He met a Saracen woman in Jerusalem, Miriam, and, uh, "took up" with her for a while. Eventually he returned to England with his master, and he retired to the abbey as a monk.

Cadfael is the abbey's herbalist and gardener, and often acts as apothecary as well. It is in the latter capacity that he gets involved in the mysteries... he's often present after sickness or injury. He has a keen eye for detail, an excellent understanding of human behaviour, and the besetting sin of insatiable curiousity. I'll stick in a spoiler for Virgin in the Ice here: Miriam bore him a son who eventually returns to England, and the two unknowingly meet in that novel... but Cadfael figures it out in the very last chapter, after he has left.

I don't know if any of this is going to help, and I definitely don't know how this relates to the Precious Ramostwe books, but there it is.

-- Steve greatly appreciated the pains that Peters took to keep the historical accuracy as close as she did.
