[SPEC] Alternate Release Date?

A friend of mine over IM pointed out a news story he found. Here's a transcript:

Quote:
****: Well, I did a search of all English News on Lexis. And I came up with this.
****: Microsoft Home & Entertainment Corp. Vp-Worldwide Retail Sales Mitch Koch said a 52-week business year was "something that we are continually talking about." He said his company was "constantly looking for more and more opportunities" throughout the year, saying there were other things that could be done in addition to just shipping new titles. For one thing, he said, a company "can take advantage of repricing" of games already out. Although Microsoft's Halo 2 is expected to ship in Nov., Koch said the company would have shipped it sooner if it was ready. Halo 2 -- sequel to the top-selling Xbox title -- is expected to be one of the year's biggest hits, along with a handful of other titles expected to ship 2nd half, including Doom 3 from Activision, Madden NFL 2005 from Electronic Arts (EA) and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from Take-Two.

He says the page requires a subscription, so he can't give me a link. The speculation he made, and that I think makes sense, is that the countdown might actually be to the real release date of Halo 2. That paragraph from the article says they would have released it earlier if they could, and for all we know, they can. I don't know if anyone can confirm the article or not, but I haven't seen that idea yet, so I thought I'd stir the pot, as it were.

wow, you found the forum devoted to it, yet can fint it. www.ilovebees.com

ryoshin, your friend makes a very valid point which has already been covered. there is a more substantial piece of evidence posted in another thread here. someone said halo 2 already has a ESRB rating (M for mature), which is only ever given to fatory-production approved games. so, halo 2 must be, for the greater part, complete. and although i don't think its going to happen, it has a LOT of evidence to back it up.

i've seen lots of closed-minded people dismiss it as wishful thinking, but its not as unlikely as they want to believe. most of them are xbox bashers anyway Razz

The Rating Of M came from this trailer that is up on the net at Halo.Bungie.Org. it says the game is rated M for Mature... Meaning the game is VERY CLOSE to completetion. But, when Halo was realeased, it was supposed ot have a rating of T, but was changed to m very close to relaease date, as i still have Offical Xbox Magainzes with it rated as T

This is trout, but the countdown does not appear in Mozilla or Firefox (and may not in other browsers, haven't checked). Open the page (http://www.ilovebees.com/) in Internet Explorer to see the countdown in all of its counting-down glory.

Considering M is the highest rating the game can get and this game is almost definantly more violent than the first, it's only logical that this game would get an M.

I didn't recall reading anything about the thought of the release date being bumped (I've read a good portion of the topics, some more thorough than others.) Sorry for the repeat spec.

Actually, AO (Adult-Only) is the highest rating a game can get, and that's given out for generally only porn games, though many have said over-the-top violent games should get it as well (Manhunt and Postal come to mind.) Most major retailers won't care AO games (for various reasons,) so companies try to stay out of that unless they are specifically going for smut.

As for the browsers (and this has probably been covered elsewhere); Firefox .8 can see the black box, but not the countdown; Same with Netscape 7.1; Opera 7.2 can see it just fine. In short, Mozilla-based browers are screwed.

I wonder if Microsoft/Bungie could be taken to court for only making the game work with IE-compatible (or whatever) browsers.

Taken to court? No. There is no law that states that websites have to be standards compliant.

Also, you paid nothing for this game, so the people in charge of it owe you nothing. They are letting you play out of the goodness in their hearts.

Cursing

Is it in vogue or something to suggest that you take EVERYONE to court for not pandering to your personal demands?

You'd be surprised. There are people out there who have theatened lawsuits over half the games lately being delayed, and also over the topic of patches not being released on time, games being released late, etc etc.

this has gotten OT very quickly Razz

I would have to say that the evidence is pointing to something big happening on august 24, and while the game being released is a possiblity, it's a small one... maybe a demo? i don't know, the fact that the coutdown is for the 24 of august, and all the major events that are mentioned in the blog, It points alot more the the game release.. but for all we know, this could be a HUGE ploy, jsut for marketing

Even a demo of the title is doubtful. Generally bigger titles - even FPSes - do their demos AFTER the title's release, because it's only to win over people who weren't already nabbing the game.

I'm dead-set on Aug. 24 being an in-game date.

It's definitely not an early release - why would all the POP advertising, and even the trailer we all found this from, say November 9 then?

that's a good point, and while they have spent all this time on advertising, dates can change very quickly. I for one would be very happy is it came out august 24, but i'll be happy if it was to come out nov 9. Something big is coming, and maybe once we get past phase 2, it will become alittle more clear..... still, there is too much evidence pointing to it coming out aug.24 for that point to be dismissed outright....

Now our point about an ingame date is an intriguing one.... but what would it be.... The date the conventant first observed humans? no, becuase then they would know where earth is, and that would get rid of a HUGE CHUNK of storyline from Halo..... any speculaiton on this?

It's not so much the time as it is the money involved - there is POP (point of purchase) right now that reads Nov. 9. Things that millions of people are going to see (movie trailers) that say Nov. 9.

Even if they did want to jump the gun and predate the holidays a bit, it's just not realistic - they still haven't finalized all the multiplayer modes (as evidenced by last week's Frankie's Bungie Update), but sp content is, i believe, frozen.

Still, the thing will have to go gold at least 24 days before release to make it to all the reserves on time.
