This is just a theory, but perhaps the file hidden inside of this picture has something to do with the pious flea? In the story it mentions that he was hidden, and his very name suggests that he is small and indescrete. I supose we can't know untill we find out the password, but if it does have anything to do with the pious flea, it is worth checking some of the text that mentions him for possible passwords.

I've looked through all the computer code collected for some command that seems to indicate adding a password. I came up empty handed but maybe someone with a keen eye might notice something. Even if it doesn't have the password, perhaps the position in the story which corresponds to the code might point us in the right direction?

Getting original image for comparison

Oof, I'm getting way too wrapped up in this...

Searched, so I don't think this is trout: On a long shot, I tried emailing Dana to get an original copy of the bee2_margaretphoto.jpg image for comparison. I'll let everyone know if I get anything interesting.

I sent a mail to ladybee777 asking for the decrypt key. Rather direct, maybe too direct.

Seriously doubt that will work. But hey, you play every card you've got, right?

I still haven't heard back from Dana. I'll check again in the morning.

I'm starting to wonder, since the (possibly) steg'd image was presented during phase1, should the passphrase be hinted at in phase1 text, or might it be in phase2 or later?

I'm also beginning to think that perhaps the steg'd image has to do with the pious flea. All the widow ever sees of him is a footprint, and that's about all we see of it.

I was starting to wonder the same thing. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of something we may have overlooked from phase 1.

Still no word from Dana. I imagine that mailbox gets pretty full.

Oh, it's the same intermittent altercation as before, mea culpa, I'll edit out my other message.

Here are some additional steg items to try.

First of all, one of the text snippets references 3 muses and then "And all the rest."

The nine muses: Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania. Try each individually, all of them together, the six not named, etc.

Also, there's a reference to "Loneliness in 300 languages." Now, what language has Dana used on the computer? Chinese. Cortana's got a friend translating Loneliness into Chinese right now, but other words for it are also good prospects.

This is my first post, and it might be trout, as I don't know what passwords were in your dictionaries - but perhaps this links up with the password from www.bugmenot.com, as pointed out here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4881 Has anyone tried "Hayden"? I definitely think that Hayden/rascal is going to come into play at some point in this, because of Carl Hayden. It could be someone trying to trick us, but I think it's valid.[/url]

Tried many variations on Hayden, rascal, elite, and shootkill.

no go.

I'm currently running a dictionary attack using a ~9MB word file I found. That will probably take quite a while. I'm not holding out much hope.

Also, still no word from Dana.

I'm beginning to think of this as a trout, after a list of 580k unique entries on it (compiled from various online dicts, our wiki, the 2 ilovebees.com pages, etc.) the only results thus far have been the following:
Code:
$steghide extract -sf bee2_margaretphoto.jpg
Enter passphrase: boime
steghide: the stego file "bee2_margaretphoto.jpg" is too short to contain the embedded data.
Other possible reasons for this error are that the passphrase is wrong
or that there is no embedded data.

That is the word/phrase "boime" gives some sort of result, but I've been unable to extract anything from the image and I'm beginning to think that this image is beeing detected without actual stenographic content.

That beeing said, the image does look "damaged", perhaps there's something missing, which'll explain that steghide complains about the file beeing to small for the actual data (or wrong pw or no embedded data at all)

For completeness the image I've been working with has the following md5sum
Code:
 791d5192d9ceb9a04f7ce883808a0c03  bee2_margaretphoto.jpg

'boime' gives me no result, but I'm using jphide/seek, not steghide.
