[SPEC] Network Throttling, Metastasizing and Wakefulness

sorry about the long post.

most people have already looked up what each of the phrases means, but has anybody discussed what each one signifies?

for example, network throttling, or I/O (input/output) throttling is a buffer system designed to slow down the huge amounts of information pouring through a network. it slows down the processing speed, but keeps the system stable. if it were to 'erode', wouldn't the system crash? which system would crash? SPiDeR itself? the server on which ilovebees.com is hosted? another in-game system not yet revealed?

as for the metastasizing of the medium, thats somewhat more simple. the 'medium' is most likely SPiDeR itself, since, on the countdown panel, it says:

Quote:
Control has been yielded to the
SYSTEM PERIL DISTRIBUTED REFLEX.

This medium is classified, and has a
STRONG INTRUSTIVE INCLINATION.

because the text says 'this medium' without changing subject, it is most likely referring to the subject of the previous sentence, which was SPiDeR. as said elsewhere on this board, the act of metastasizing is to spread. and since SPiDeR has a 'strong intrusive inclination,' it is therefore not far-fetched to assume that it wants to spread to other networks (new in-game websites not yet revealed...?), intrusively, if you will. especially after it has made the server it calls home crash (if that is the network referred to).

now, about the wakefulness and physicality. there i get confused. the SPiDeR is, in my opinion, not self-aware. it is definitely meant to represent an AI, but it is asleep.

all the embedded text seems to me to be a dream SPiDeR is having, because it is nonsensical in practical terms. and, as most psychologists would tell you, dreams are rife with symbolism, as the embedded text is.

so, on august 24th, SPiDeR will wake up.

but how will it become physical? i am working under the assumption Bungie is heavily involved in this, because of the presence of the URL in the Halo 2 trailer. so, with that out of the way...

in Halo, the AI Cortana is transferred into the Master Chief's MJOLNIR Mk.V powered armor suit. this, technically, gave her a physical body (which she also had while inside the Pillar of Autumn's internal network, assuming the ship was her 'body').

but what form does the SPiDeR have? what form could it have? it exists in cyberspace. nothing about cyberspace is physical. what could it do to become physical? invade a character's PC? their Palm Pilot? neither of these seems very likely to me.

so it is here i must admit, i have run out of suggestions as to what could happen on the twenty fourth of august, concerning the physicality of SPiDeR.

ideas?

We're currently operating under the assumptions that Dana and aunt Margaret and flash & blood humans...

the SPDR is not Dana and Margaret, if i remember correctly. they are trying to get SPiDeR off their website. i am not sure how your reply is an answer to what i said...

I'm just saying it cold become physical by taking over one of them, assuming it's an android, cyborg, or simulacrum.

ah, now i understand. my friend suggested that to me, but a problem presents itself: how would it get into the person's brain?

right from the off, let's take for granted that in-game, it is possible to transfer data from a computer into a human brain (which, out-of-game, is not yet possible).

how would our SPDR get Dana or auntie M into a position where it could transfer itself? for now, its only a semi-conscious source code error on a website. if there were any brain-plugs around to connect to the back of someone's head, how could it do it?

and i don't know why you would assume its any of the three machine-living thing hybrids (i.e. already physical forms) you listed. if it were an android, cyborg or simulacrum, it would already have a body, therefore not need to go physical. and, those three machines have their processes in their own CPUs, they wouldn't need to exist on a website.

i think it has more to do with getting off of cyberspace than outside of a computer.

but i'm still baffled

that's not necessary, they may not be humans. the "it" in me previous post refered to either aunt Margaret or Dana.

now you've lost me. could you clarify what you mean in a full paragraph? without referring to any posts, even at the risk of repeating yourself.

Explanation

I believe he meant SPiDeR could take over the aunt m(microsoft?) or dana, if these two were a cyborg or android. I know I'm butting in, but oh well Razz

We're currently operating under the assumptions that Dana and aunt Margaret and flash & blood humans. What if instead one if them is an android, cyborg, or simulacrum. In that case The Operator would be able to take them over via a simple data transfer.

There's already some indication that Dana may not be human. She uses the same phrases repeatedly, and repeatedly refers to "processing" rather than "thinking". (see this thread)

she uses slang though, and the fact that she repeats phrases means little. i could use the phrase 'tommy tit' at least twice daily (londoners will get it), and i bleed, so i couldn't be an android. and although the processing thing is weird, she could just be trying to be facetious.

Trout?

I'm not exactly sure what a trout is, so tell me if this is one. In a previous thread, it was noted in Dana's email replies to many people included the word "processing", where most people would have put "think". There was also some other computerish type slang that didn't sound normal.

Trouting, I believe, is a polite way to say that the information has already been found/compiled/speculated etc.

Network throttling

So the network throttling will erode on 7/26. This coincides with the day that Dana has said in a few emails (see correspondance threads) she'll "give [the web site] one last shot."

One way or another, I think that's the date we'll get our next big clue.

I'm new to this, but I've spent the last X hours sponging up everything in all the forums, so I'm pretty sure this isn't trout.

Your ideas sound a lot like some of the plot from the Ender Series by Orson Scott Card. In the books, there's an AI/entity(Jane) that exists on the communcation lines that connect planets together. In the end, Janes is transferred into a body that has no soul, but I dont really think this will be at all relevant to what's going to happen. I'm just noticing a parallel between your assertion and the novel.
