[META] Hoaxbusters

I haven't seen this addressed specifically, so I thought I'd throw out some guidelines to help cut down on some of the red herrings that are out there.

First, let me say that, historically, there are those out there who really enjoy playing with us players. They'll usually try to impersonate either an in-game character or an in-game site. Their motivation can go from simple asshattedness to financial gain. And it happens in these things. It happens a lot.

The thing is, it's relatively easy to tell if something is part of this whole thing, or if it's not. In a nutshell, if it's pointed to on an in-game site (not as a user comment) then, and only then, are you assured that there's a possibility that it's ingame. Examples of what would obviously be ingame at this point:

Dana's Blog
Any emails from Dana's or Margaret's known email addresses
IM from Margaret's known handle on MSN Messenger

If not, if just anyone could set it up, then look at it with a very, very high level of skepticism. This includes any website, IM handle, IRC nick, whatever, that can't be traced directly back to something only the Puppetmasters have control over the creation of. Examples:

The CafePress Stores
capitallism.org
IM from anyone other than LadyBee777 on MSN
Anyone in IRC, really, unless their IP can be traced back to ilovebees.com
Comments on a blog
Posts in this or other forums

Now, this doesn't mean that the PMs might not choose to use one of these avenues of commnication in-game, but if they would, they would be sure to give us some way of verification that it's really them.

Think of it like all those email hoaxes. Don't get caught falling for it.

Add to Hoax-y list: ihatebees.com

(despite their recent hoax-y messages recently put on their site that weren't there yesterday, iirc)

<Rougewisp> what?
<Rougewisp> dude, you suck

Hoax guidelines suggestions

Vpisteve's comments make good sense. As sometimes happened on The Beast, hoaxers are siphoning off ARGers' attention from relevant material. Don't know how much it would change things, but maybe an "ARG Occam's Razor" would help, derived from Steve's Hoaxbusters post. Could go in the Wiki.

Valid ARG leads generally fit a few easy criteria. How to spot a real lead:

1. It will be generated only from established in-game sites and puzzles - never from publicly-accessible user forums or sites you have to google (too unstable).

2. It will add something important to the storyline. An ARG by definition bridges fictional and nonfictional universes, but the plot is always self-contained. Use the simplest explanation: if you have to turn the known story inside out to make the new lead fit, remain skeptical.

3. Emails and IMs will come only from addresses clearly established in the game. Watch for variant spellings and other fake-outs.

4. It will never ask you to spend money. After all there's only one product this marketing campaign exists for, and it's not t-shirts.

5. Finally, it will be interesting and well-constructed. It won't be some lame one-line warning, it won't be a rote repetition of a site you've already seen, and it won't misspell "Zeus". Our PMs put a lot of work and thought into these things, give 'em some credit.

I think all good leads fit these criteria, and no fakes hit them all (notwithstanding the "varrao" typo on ilovebees). There's also the ol' Whois lookup test, but I'm not sure common registration dates are universally accurate. Did I miss any others? Let me know what you think.

Call it an in-game Chain of Custody. In real life when you need to prove an item or document came from a legitimate source, you attach a chain of custody, where one person signs off that they have received the item from the previous holder, so you can show how it's passed hands. In this way you can positively verify the origin of the item or document.

Similarly, think of chain of custody as it applied to this game. Any website, email, IM, etc. will be pointed to in some way directly or indirectly from ilovebees.com. If you can show how to get to the website or email from ilovebees.com then you've preserved chain of custody and you're probably safe to call it in-game.

You don't have to have a direct link form ilovebees.com straight to the site as long as intermediate sites are also preserved under the chain of custody rules. For example, if ilovebees.com had a link to something like apiaryawareness.org, and apiaryawareness.org then had a link to hivefoundation.net, then hivefoundation.net would still be in-game because chain of custody has been preserved.

OK, I've hammered this concept into the ground. Do with it what you will.

Falsities Wiki page

For those that don't already know, the Wiki maintains a list of hoax links here which you should definitely check before posting a "new" lead.

Checksum's "Chain of Custody" rule of thumb seems valid to me so think about that even if the thing you found isn't on the Wiki "Falsities" list yet.
