I did a quickie transcription for those who can't hear the voicemail message. This is everything up to the Chinese phrase.

Quote:
Hi, this is Dana. I'm going away (pause) far away (pause) and for a long time. Leave a message. (pause) Although, I don't know when I'll get it. Mom (pause) I know you're calling just to hear the sound of my voice. (pause) I love you too.

[SPEC] What if its a warning?

I don't understand a lick of Mandarin, and I doubt Dana is an expert either, but what if she used the incorrect terms intentionally as a warning?

kilmar wrote:
If that's the case I will translate literally what she said.

She said literally "I do not have any coming here. Sorry". However, the sentence structure is not correct in mandarin as it doesn't work.

"Mei" in mandarin means "not", but in the numerical sense (as in "lack of" or "none"). She should have used "bu" meaning "no" in the traditional sense.

"Lei" in mandarin means "come". She should have used "Wui" which means to "come back".

"lai" means "here"

"Dui bu chi" is easy. I'm sure quite a few non-chinese people know that phrase already.

However, even with the horrible mandarin and the wrong choice of phrases, I'm very confident she means to say "I am not coming back. Sorry".

I'm glad I can help Smile

Mei = not (numeric) = null or zero

Lei = come

lai = here

Could " Zero come here " or "Null come here" be a warning about an intruder? or invasion?

Just a wild spec....

More wild speculation on the voicemail

Just some more wild SPEC...

If she was trying to leave a message and thought the AI could tap into her voicemail maybe she's leaving false information in English... maybe she wants the AI to think she's leaving but she isn't. Why would she leave the second part in Chinese unless she expected someone who can speak chinese to hear it... maybe someone she was supposed to meet in China?

Maybe the chinese means that she won't be going to china.. sorry?

Or not.. this is pretty baseless SPEC. Smile

More SPEC. Perhaps the message is for her mother. The phrase "I know you're calling just to hear the sound of my voice" could be a signal that the chinese message at the end is for her mother's ears only. Wheter it means "I won't be coming back to the States" or "I won't be going to meet you in China" is still up for SPEC and debate.

Or she's telling her mother not to come to China and try and find her?

I really like the idea that since Dana's spooked, she's afraid that whatever's making her webcam look at her and creep her out with stuff on the ILB pages can access her voicemail too, and therefore would speak Chinese so the AI would not understand... However, we need to figure out the intended recipient of that Chinese message to know how that works! (But we need to know what it's saying to accurately deduce the recipient!!! AARRGGHH!!!) Laughing

I don't think the mandarin she spoke can mean "I won't be going to meet you in China"

the "not come back" portion is certain. In mandarin she is stating she is not coming back from somewhere (China).

Of course, there could be a deeper meaning, but I don't think it means she's not going.

I think it may just be her "getting into" this trip. A lot of people do something similar when they go on trips, put a little music in the backround or their attempts at the native language on their voice mail/ blog/IM/auto-reply.

Anthrax, I hear ya man, but I just don't think she would be in that frame of mind. I don't know, and it's probably dangerous to assume any frame of mind, but I just can't see her packing things, trying to "get into the spirit of going"... I think she's scared, and that she's sad to leave her mother, and she needed to say something privately. What and to whom, we just don't know (yet).

(**edit - also, I second the notion that this chinese message was not intended to Chloe... I think this was to someone else, and since she's going to China, it may make sense it was a message to someone expecting to hear from her, or something, in China... Again, Spec, but not unfounded spec)

"Nobody come here"

After seeing the actual translation of the words, I think that she was trying to say "Nobody come here" "Don't come here" "No Come here", like that. Warning people that something awful is happening and she's running away from it. I don't speak Mandarin, I'm just basing that off of what kilmar said. (Thanks!)

I take it we all agree that she has definitely gone to china?

I dis agree with you, i think it is a message for chloe. We know her family opposed the idea, and maybe they know something she hasn't told us. I also have a funny feeling that she aint planning on coming back, as the pauses sounded like her stopping herself from crying as she wrote a kind of final note to her mother.

I don't understand the last bit though, why suddenly change to mandarin unless its a private message intended for only 1 person.

She uses the mandarin word for "I" as the noun, so she is speaking about herself.

And you're welcome! Anything to help the community solve this puzzle.

Partnerz, I wildly spec that she's still at home, or somewhere nearby, but I definitely see the wildness and such in that, so I agree with point #1.

Point #2 the only part I DON'T think is for Chloe, is the Mandarin part anyway. Obviously, the Mother part is for her mother. Confused

Point #4 My point exactly.

But I have to say, in terms of sheer rational brainstorming, Partnerz, you and Shad0 are "da man". You two have been hitting all the points I think about, and well, too... so kudos there!

*** point 3 is actually a passive-agressive omittance of a honey-glazed snickers bar recipe. Cool
