[SPEC] hid it in a secret place spec - halo related

"a secret was revealed

I should not be able to make any one understand how exciting it all was.

I brought it home and hid it in a secret place"

I looked, but couldn't find this, hopefully I didn't just miss it.

I've been wondering if the "hid it in a secret place" could have anything with the coordinates encoded and hidden in rocks and artifacts as mentioned in the first Halo book.

If I recall, the covenant recovered a certain rock when invaded one of the human planets, I can't remember which one, and I don't have my book with me.

Anyways, no one could figure out what was so important about this rock. Cortana intercepted communications, and realized that the Covenant had found coordinates somehow hidden or encoded in the makeup of this specific rock... When Keyes told Cortana to make a random jump, she said yes but instead jumped to these coordinates, where they found Halo. This is the scene from the beginning of the game.

Could this have anything to do with "I brought it home and hid it in a secret place"?

or has this line been spec'd to death and solved already?

It was adrift in space: a squat cylinder of dull gray metal, // about the size of a suitcase. Not pure osmium all the way through - it was too dense for that - but osmium was the only firm echo the sensors returned. We cast a net and reeled it in.

Maybe that rock? Maybe it was sending out coords to the Cov?

It's from Chapter IV of the e-mail that ladybee777SPLAThotmail.com -- a.k.a. the Sleeping Princess (we presume) -- sent to a bunch of folks for our update last Tuesday, August 3, 2004.

the one I am thinking of was in the the first book, in a city, on a planet. I want to say it was Cote De Azur or something like that, I'll have to run to the bookstore and look it up while I'm out.

If I recall the rock or whatever was dug out of the ground, and was in a museum, I think. This was where they first encountered the Hunters.

I seem to recall Keyes positioning the ship he was on at the time directly between the planet and a hovering covenant ship, so that he could intercept a communication coming from the planet.

I loaned out the book and never got it back, so I'll try to check at the bookstore while I'm out.

I was reading the book for the first time today. They tell about that stone it's in a museum that's heavily guarded by covies in Cote d'Azur, it has also supossedly come from a meteor. Master Chief takes it from what I think are two Hunters.

Actually, it was he and several other spartans working together. If I remember correctly, that was the first time they encountered hunters, which lead to one of them losing his arm.

The rock with rubies...

The Covenant never got the rock. That is "safely" in ONI custody...*somewhere*.

The newly Captained Keyes was able to destroy the Covenant stealth ship in geosynchronous orbit over the Cote d' Azure. The stealth ship was receiving a transmission from the city below. Captain Keyes finished off the stealth ship, and was able to receive part of the transmission before it was cut off at the source.

Meanwhile, on the planet below, Master Chief found the Hunters placing rock samples from the Geology wing of a human museum in Cote d' Azure into a scanner of some sorts. This scanner emitted a very powerful infrared laser beam straight upward...to the waiting Covenant stealth ship. Master Chief was able to neutralize, though not destroy, the Hunters (He and the other Spartans shot the floor out from beneath them). He also recovered the piece of granite with ruby inclusions that had been placed in the scanner. The transmission matched the pattern of inclusions within the rock.

Humanity got the artifact itself, and was able to stop the Covenant from getting some of the information contained in that artifact. As to how much the Covenant got...that is never expressly stated. The Covenant may've been at Halo before the humans got there, or they may've followed the humans as Cortana suggests in the video game.

Also, there was more then one rock. I'm not sure how many the humans got. They could all point to Halo. Or to various Forerunner installations. Or to Earth, but who really knows, besides Bungie.

From the book it seems that the covenant had to have arrived at least a little before Cortana and her crew, since they a) found the flood and got scared out of their wits by it and b) they already had other ships on the way with some sort of holiness or the like who was going to look it over. Folowing the human ship there would be a bit problematic, since they wouldn't then have had time to land, set of defensible locations, stumbled on the flood and let some loose, got stuck trying to fight off the flood that had escaped and infiltrated their ship or sent out a signal to bring in more ships to look that place over more carefully. Thus one must assume that they got their first, likely following the same data that Cortana only decifered prior to jumping. The time line is still a tad confused, but it seems that they had to have gotten there first and at the very least told other covenent ships where to go. Wether that was by mere hours or a day or so, who knows.
