[SPEC/QUESTION] are Melissa's memories gone now?

first, go read the Operator's Monologue
http://bees.netninja.com/wiki/index.php?title=The_Operator%27s_Monologue

in the middle you get this:
Quote:

But that's life when a weapon is what you are. Not all you are, but the first thing, the most /// important thing.

With so few resources, that's all that will be left. I know it already, even if the Spider doesn't.

There was a time once when I was more than a tool: /// but a tool is all I'm going to be. A weapon and the hand that holds it. My dreams and desires, the jokes I thought were funny and the philosophy I decided was too abstract, The Tempest and Stormy Weather all reduced to a single distillate:

survive evade reveal escape.

at the end you see this text:

Quote:
Memory benchmark retest:

SEEK!

Memory benchmark retest concluded.

All gone now.

That's okay.

Feel better. Lighter. Clear-headed.

Time to hunt.

so, are all the memories of the ship gone now, has Melissa been stripped down to only a weapon? can we even communicate with her as an emotional intelligence now?

that's a good question.
Did she just lose the rest of her few remaining memories, leaving her a total amnesiac -- or did she lose her emotional capacity as well?

She seems to have quite a lot of hate towards Dana, and seemed to take enjoyment in taking pictures of her, so I'd guess she's still got emotions.

You sure? She says after wiping her memory "The hunt is on" or something similar, before that she was effectively immobilized, with the whole "I would laugh if I could atleast move" comment.

I think that Melissa still is clinging on to her memories and whatever humanity she has left. it seems that she does not like being "The Queen" and she does not like SPDR trying to fix her. Just about every time SPDR probes her, she gets angry.

"The Queen is a monstrous verminous bug"

The queen has had her memories wiped to activate the second function that the crew members talk about.

It doesn't matter what she wants, the spider is most likely programmed to do this in this situation

its not that shes losing her memoriies, its more the memories that she holds protect her from her second objective - a weapon.

This is my theory anyway.

In the latest version of the monologue, there are 3 memory checks:

The first has the full conversation between Kowalski and Arrelts, ending with "he's lying ... my favorite game is HIDE AND SEEK!"

Later there's a memory retest, yielding a fragmented version of the above, with big chunks cut out. The Operator says afterward, "The rest wiped and reused ..."

Then near the very end there's another memory retest which yields only "SEEK!". The rest of that whole memory has now been wiped and reused for something else.

So it's not necessarily that all her memories are gone, but certainly parts of her memory are being wiped and she's picking up on it.

Does that section imply to anyone else that our AI is/was/is-based-on Kowalski?

Different subject on same topic. (Does that make sense?)

If we have this "fact" that after 7 years, an AI pretty much "mentally" overloads from information and thinking, does it make sense that what the SPDR is doing, is removing memories, removing data that "cluttered" up the mind, essentially extending it's useful life? Do we have the "first" example of AI Botox here? (That's a joke, but with a serious meaning) I'm not a HALO junkie or anything, so I don't know the story, and frankly don't care, as long as the 7 year thing is as I understand it here... Please comment, people... Smile

i honestly don't think SPDR isn't sufficienty intelligent to make that determination

more spec: could it be that the apparent ship crash combined with dana deleting parts of melissa's memories sufficiently "uncluttered" her memory enough to make the a.i. functional again?

It doesnt have to be Kowalski. We know the ship is on a secondary, secret mission, that is unlikely to be told to the AI due to the fatc that the coleman effect cannot be implicated.

Then the AI could also have a secondary function. If she is usually hide and seek, then her secondary function could be spin the bottle.(I used the game due to the fact were unsure the types of Ai they wouls be)

Maybe if we could work out what types of AI spin the bottle would be, we may be able to work out more about the initial mission.

(this is based on some SPEC)

dorkmaster i think we're onto the same theory:

a possible explanation for melissa not being rampant is the loss of all her memories through the crash, SPDR and dana's deletions.

someone else knock that around for a bit

This seems to make sense. In the story, the Widow finds her Queen dead, and revives her with a knife.

I see the possibility that durring the process of repairing the Operator, SPDR is cutting away the "useless" bits and pieces to essentially save space.
SPDR was designed to trim the fat, as it were. The Operator doesn't seem to be hung up on any sort of complex emotional issues anymore, save for the hatred aimed at the Assassin/Dana. SPDR isn't just repairing the Operator, its optimizing its performance.

Anything? No good?
I'm still new. lol

Edit: damn, I think I have to trout myself here. I recall talk that SPDR is stripping away the Operator to the point where she is just a weapon(as evident at the end of the monologue).
